Excellent Guide

I'm a new Chiropractic Physician who has found this to be a valuable little guide when it comes to refreshening my memory from things I've forgotten in school (it happens to the best of us). Each condition listed in this book lists everything you would want to know (on the surface) for each condition and is done so succinctly, but not too succinctly. It was written by a PT, so as a D.C. I have to add my own flavor to the evaluation and treatment section but this is easily done. Great little book.

Although he holds a Ph.D. in engineering, he claims his chief qualification for writing Know Your Boat is the self-education process he undertook after spending piles of money in boatyards.

Maybe it's good for cruising sailboat owners...

As a new owner of a 25 foot powerboat, I was eager to delve into this book and learn about the systems on my boat. The description here led me to believe that this book would be pertinent.

I did not find it helpful. The author excludes outboard motors from discussion. Six of the ten chapters don't pertain at all to boats like mine: Engine Basics (because outboards are excluded), Freshwater Plumbing, Marine Toilets, Stoves, Sinks, and Refrigeration, Sailboat Rigging, and Getting Ready for the Big Trip.

Relatively few new boat owners begin with a boat of a size that typically includes such features. If the description had more accurately described what one would find inside, I would have saved my money.

Very important for first time boat owners

Very clear with plenty of easy to follow drawings and schematics, this book sheds light on very confusing aspects of boat ownership, chartering, surveying or just 'using'. Now, when I lift a floorboard or the engine room I know what every piece is and is supposed to do. David cruised extensively and he gives us the benefit of all his mistakes. I strongly suggest buying this book and keepint it on board.

Has Some Very Nice and useful Pictorials

Presented here in seriatim, are basic introductions to a number of isolated and completely unrelated topics in physics. Compared to the "REA Problem Solver on Physics;" the old standby, the "Schaum Outline Series on Physics;" or indeed my favorite on these topics "The Transnational College of LEX series," the DeMYSTiFieD Series is comfortably pulling up the rear.

After having read seven of the series, so far, all of the signs are that the material in them seems to have been "culled" from the bottom of better summary and introductory sources.

But giving credit where some is surely due, at least this volume has some very good and useful graphics and diagrams that tend to bring home the most basic points of some of the key elements of physics.

That of course is all to the good. However, in trying to make the substance "overly" accessible, the author has reached so low as to bleach out everything but the most elementary of the basic concepts and ideas.

As Einstein is reputed to have said about theorizing: "We should make it simple, but no simpler than necessary." Here, Physics has been made much simpler than necessary. So much so that one loses any sense of wholeness to the subject matter itself.

What's the point of studying physics if you can't ever hope to understand its more advanced concepts like Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, etc.? This volume starts so low, that even when it ends it is still well off the low end of the charts. This is especially unforgivable in an era where there is so much excitement in the field of physics. Too much time is spent providing background on elementary mathematics, which is never shown to be useful later on anyway.

There are easy ways to introduce difficult materials, just as there are difficult ways to avoid introducing them. The DeMYSTiFieD Series seems to have chosen the latter approach.

If as is the case in most of the DeMYSTiFieD Series, the subjects are only intended to be the most basic and elementary of introductions, the authors should say so up front.

Again, I am thoroughly disappointed, but two stars for the graphics.

Dymystifies Physics without Calculus

This book uses intermediate to advanced algebra and some (very little) pre - calculus to explain physics. It's great how they break it down so much - they start with the "what is a linear function" lesson, and go over real and complex numbers and graphing in case you forgot. Don't let the thinkness fool you - the first 7 chapters are spent getting you up to speed with the math that they use for the rest of the text. The way they explain the math is SO easy. However, if you are looking for a study guide with CALCULUS based explainations, this is not the book you need. Easy read, worth the money.

very disappointing

I knew physics was going to be difficult for me, this book made it worse. it spends a greater part of the book going over basics of math up to trig. all the way to chapter 7 almost (half the book!!!)its all basics and hardly any physics. concepts covered were not detailed enough and I found the quizzes useless since information to accomplish them were vague and useless. oh well .... I'll take it again next semester.

***Personally, I suggest you visit your local borders etc... and spend an hour or so reading through it to see if it suits your needs.... that's just me ... I wish I had!***

Not quite what I expected

Zollinger's features very good illustrations and notes (including postoperative care) for nearly every imaginable procedure in gastrointestinal surgery (including exotic and complex operations such as total pancreatectomy and Klatskin tumor resections), short of bariatric surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, fundoplication and splenectomy are covered as well.
However, information is sorely lacking on breast surgery (all we get are descriptions of modified radical mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy; useful, but no mention of conservative breast surgery), head and neck surgery (limited to near-total thyroidectomy and radical neck dissection) and thoracic surgery (posterolateral thoracotomy and that's it). No information *at all* on urology (as a resident, I'd gladly trade my plates on total pancreatectomy for a few on nephrectomy, nephrostomy and cystostomy). Gynecologic and vascular procedures are adequately covered.
In my copy, there is nothing on page 391 (Plate CLXXXIII on posterolateral thoracotomy is blank).
So, as a resident, Zollinger's won't be quite as useful as I expected, given the limited range of non-gastrointestinal general surgical procedures covered. However, I suspect I will make good use of its excellent in-depth coverage of gastrointestinal surgery.

fantastic, artistic

Truely one of the most successful books of the kind, the strucure is well designed, the operations included cover a eide range of procedures, and most noticeble is the very high quality of the explanatory figures, sometimes by just brawsing through them you get 80% of what to do... the text is well written and concise. You will find many approaches for each operation. of course it will be impossible to gather all the surgical craft in one book. but this one succeeds in collecting a large chunk of it. i highly recommend it for all juniors and postgrads alike.

A classic, surgical atlas but needs a bit of updating

A well-drawn, classic surgical atlas that includes most general surgical procedures. A definite must have for any surgical resident or general surgeon.

I would like to see more procedures added however to make it truly exceptional: an update on breast surgery, including biopsy, expanded laparoscopic techniques, basic thoracic procedures - thoracotomy, lung biopsy, and VATS.

Schaum's Outlines - Electronic Devices and Circuits

I have read the material through chapter 6, and believe it to be well-presented - concise yet thorough. I am troubled that some of the solved problems seem to have glaring errors. If I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me (If I were an expert in this field, there would be no point in buying the publication). On page 84, material is presented that indicates that for an n-channel MOSFET to be active, vgs must be greater than or equal to Vt. Solved problems 4.10 and 4.11 have solutions showing the MOSFET active with vgs < Vt. Solved problem 4.12 appears to have a similar error. I am sympathetic to the difficulties of putting together such a publication and ensuring that it's void of errors. To me the solution is to post an errata sheet on the internet. I have contacted the publisher seeking an errata sheet for another book. Their response was basically, "thank you for bringing the errors to our attention, but no, we can't make the errata sheet available." It seems to me that posting of errata sheets on the net would enhance the value of McGraw-Hill's products. An alternative may be to sponsor a forum or chat-room for each book, so that users could compare thoughts. On the whole, I rate this publication a B- or C+. I have found this and other Schaum's Outlines to be helpful when used to augment other materials.

Could have been better

ELECTRONIC DEVICES & CIRCUITS, SECOND EDITION - CATHEY
It's always interesting to see how authors attempts to fill those niches between basic DC/AC circuit analysis with passive components and analog (linear) circuit design/analysis with active electronic circuit devices. Discounting the fact that this is, after all, an outline on the subject written as a supplement to your text, I'd give it a C+.
About 75% of the book is dedicated to diodes and transistor (all types) amplifier circuits. This is basic resistor biasing, find a load line, and establish the Q-point, kind of stuff. If you're studying to become an analog circuit designer, it is unlikely that ever, in your life, will you be called upon to design such a discrete transistor amplifier; however, this is a "row you'll have to hoe". So if you find yourself in the middle of a blizzard of transistor symbols, parameters, models, characteristics & configurations, this may be of some help; it's no silver bullet.
It would have been nice to have seen some introduction to 1) semiconductor physics, 2) current source biasing, 3) oscillators, 4) basic power supplies, 5) data conversion and 6) integrated circuits and etc.
Best help will be found in 1) DC and small signal examples of BJT and FET transistor design, 2) transistor modeling, 3) better than average SPICE examples, 4) and working with semiconductor parameters. There's a brief introduction to OP Amps and Switching Regulator power supplies. I didn't see a lot of errors and, with most Schaum's Outlines, there are plenty of practice problems.
If you are still looking for help, try looking at some of the books written by Thomas L. Floyd. One hardback - "Fundamentals of Linear Circuits" - now ten or more years old, can be picked up on the used book shelves for about what you will pay for this outline. His books that I've seen are more for the ET than the EE, however if you're looking for another down to earth view of basic analog circuits, I suggest you check it out.

help for the hardest transitional subject for undergrad EE students

For both physics and electrical engineering undergraduates alike, the one to two semester courses you take in electronics shall probably be a difficult transition regardless of how well you did in your circuit analysis course. This is largely due to the fact that nobody tells you WHY this subject is important (to produce nonlinear transfer functions & to perform power amplification- neither which can be accomplished with RLC circuits), or bothers to show you sufficient examples so that you can perform designs of your own. This Schaum's outline is an excellent companion to all of those electronics textbooks that are failing miserably. Other reviewers are right- as a practicing engineer you will probably never be called upon to bias a transistor to get a specified gain, or several other of the basic tasks that this outline goes over in detail. However, you won't be able to graduate until you master these techniques. As an example of its usefulness, I got a B in my first semester of electronics years ago, and for years I could not have told you the first thing about what went on in that class. It seemed that the students that really did well were part magician and part TV repairman. I bought this outline to learn what I should have mastered back in 1979, and the book made me understand the circuit design techniques involved plus brought me up-to-date in design and analysis techniques.
The outline does not talk about the semiconductor physics of electronic devices. Instead it concentrates on design techniques for circuits that incorporate the diode, BJT, FET, and operational amplifier, which are crafts you must master. Included in this outline is how to define an electronic circuit in PSPICE and the last chapter incorporates all you have learned throughout the book into the analysis and design of a switched mode power supply. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to undergraduate electronics textbooks.

Principles of Yacht Design was the first book for mnay years to examine every aspect of the process of yacht design and was welcomed with open arms by owners of boats small and large, practising designers, naval architecture students and the boatbuilding industry as a whole. Now revised and expanded for its second edition to cover power boat design in more detail, it makes an even more valuable contribution to our understanding of the process of yacht design.

The authors have used a newly designed 40 foot performance cruiser to demonstrate the practical application of yacht design theory. Beginning with the yacht's specificaitons, the authors explain the geometry of the hull by means of lines plans and introduce CAD techniques. Hydrostatics and stability in calm water as well as waves are described in detail, as is the design of the hull, keel and rudder. Next the aerodynamics of the sails and the influence this has on the shape of the sail plan is examined. Methods are introduced for finding the balance of the yacht, and there is a short chapter on selecting the correct propeller and the engine. The special hydrodynamics of high-speed power boats is also addressed for the first time in this edition.

Structural aspects of the design are treated comprehensively for both sail and power boats. Loads acting on the hull and rig are identified and methods for computing them introduced. There is also a discussion of different fibre reinforced plastics, including sandwich laminates. Finally, practical matters such as the layout of the cockpit, deck and cabin are discussed, and a complete weight calculation is provided for the 40-footer.

The book is richly illustrated with explanatory diagrams, and although the subject is complicated, the authors treat it in a remarkably clear and concise manner, making it easily understandable for both professionals and amateurs interested in the principles of yacht design.

About the Author

Lars Larsson, a naval architect, is Professor of Hydrodynamics at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is President of Flowtech International and was a scientist at SSPA Maritime Consulting from 1971-89. He has written around 100 papers on computational fluid dynamics applied to ship hydrodynamics, and has taught many academic and public courses in yacht design.

A sailor since birth, Lars Larsson was instructor in aero and hydrodynamics to the 1984 Swedish Olympic sailing team, was design consultant to the Swedish America's Cup team from 1975-80, the US America II team from 1984-87, and the Italian Il Moro di Venezia from 1989-92.

Rolf E Eliasson, a yacht design/construction engineer specialising in yacht structures, runs his own design company for both production and one-off yachts. More than 4000 yachts have been built from his designs over the past 25 years. Between 1976 and 1982 he won three international design competitions and was runner up in a fourth.

Rolf Eliasson has been a member of working groups within the EU since 1990, setting ISO standards for yacht safety, stability and scantlings. He has built six yachts himself--in steel, wood and using different GRP methods--and is one of the forerunners in using computer techniques for yacht design and for the evaluation of new designs.

Highly detailed and technical analysis of yacht design

Larsson and Eliasson present - in detail - the engineering and naval architecture processes that a yacht designer should use in designing a seaworthy yacht. The book presents, as an example, the design -from scratch- of a 40 ft. cruising sloop. Every aspect of yacht design is covered: hull shape, speed, friction, displacement, stability, dynamic stability, rigging, construction, interior design ergonomics, deck design, scantlings, standards, etc.
Typical of an engineering book, the style is factual and dry. Some people may find it lacks the poetry of other books.
Specially attractive is the presentation of formulas in separate boxes. Be prepared, however, to get acquainted with metric units, and engineering terms and formulas.
This is probably the most serious book on the subject of the yacht design. The only possible deficiencies are that motor yacht design is not specifically covered, and that emphasis is placed in the design of safe cruising sailboats rather than high performance racing boats. Despite these omissions, there is no doubt this book is a MUST for anyone really interested in the subject of designing a boat, specially if it is a sailboat.

Basically comprehensive but calcs are incomplete

This is a worthwhile text on yacht design and is fairly comprehensive. It's the best replacement to date for the venerable but dated "Elements of Yacht Design" by Norman Skene. One word of caution though-if you take the time to actually follow through all the formulas and design methodologies, you'll find that the calculations are often incomplete or simply incorrect! If the publishers or authors would take the time to properly edit this book, they'd really have something.

Excellent Design Guide

The second edition of this book is an excellent step by step guide to both power and sail design. The book is written by a professor and professional yacht designer, that provide both excellent science and practical experience.

Yacht design is not a simple topic and cannot be made into childs play. THere are complex trades among stability, speed, displacement, length to beam ratios and much more. Most any boat will float if some effort is made to be sure its materials do not out weigh the hull shape displacement, but making a vessel that is safe in a seaway, speedy and efficient is another matter.

I highly recommend this book after 20+ years in yacht design software development and strongly encourage the seriously interested boat designer to carefully read and try the examples for him (her) self.
