Bruce Jacobs is a financial consultant and teaches mutual fund investing courses at Broward Community College. His seminar "The ABCs of Mutual Fund Investing" is presented throughout the year. He has written numerous articles on mutual fund investing for several Miami newspapers and is the author of All About Mutual Funds (first edition). The Lessons We Should Never Forget....

Years of riding the market's hype-high has been replaced by this year's bitter withdrawl. How many thousands did I invest based on nothing more than a few articles written by "experts" and the all-knowing smiles of MSNBC's Squak Box? I wish I had read this book instead!
Its sane, responsible, and time-tested approach to investing is the backbone of any sound financial body. Although my need-it-now-nature wanted to skip the well-written introductory chapters and jump to the "real" secret of investing, I came to realize that there is no "secret." There is no magic bullet. So, I went back, and started the book from the beginning, reading each page, slowly filling in the rather large gaps in my investing knowledge.
In these unsettled times, this book feels like the calm voice of proven experience.

Inaccurate perceptions over the efficacy of the Russian space program long fueled the U.S.-Russian space race and are now driving current cooperation efforts, Oberg argues in this insider account. A self-described lifelong space nut and an expert on the Russian space program, Oberg shows that despite U.S. fear over the Soviet Union's achievements in space, the failed missions during communism's decay were nothing new: the U.S.S.R. had simply covered up their earlier mistakes, such as fires aboard Soviet space stations. And not surprisingly, these mistakes only multiplied as funding for the Soviet space program dried up in the late 1980s and early '90s. But Oberg has a larger ax to grind here joint space efforts. Since the mid-1970s, the U.S. and the Soviet Union increasingly tried to cooperate in space; Oberg opposes this teamwork for two reasons, the first being that space cooperation didn't produce the mutual understanding it was supposed to. He's on solid ground here, particularly when he discusses the communist era. But what really seems to gnaw at him is that cooperation has become NASA's major justification for space missions. As he puts it, "If the Russians aren't involved, the project shouldn't occur" is the prevailing attitude. While Oberg includes interesting information about past and future space programs, he fails to provide enough fodder to convince the non-space enthusiast that pursuing new U.S.

Oberg (Uncovering Soviet Disasters: Exploring the Limits of Glasnost), a former NASA contract employee, believes that Russia (and before it the Soviet Union) has cooperated with the United States on space missions not to promote international goodwill or advance scientific research but rather to secure funding for its own space program, maintain a continued presence in the international space market, and obtain access to U.S. technology. The U.S.-Russian space partnership, which occurred in 1993 when the "Space Race" finally ended, has cost the United States billions, and return on the investment has been minimal. The author blames primarily NASA, accusing the agency of overlooking significant cultural differences that hinder cooperation between the two nations, passively accepting delayed deliveries of overpriced and possibly unsafe space equipment, ignoring the lessons learned during previous cooperative ventures, and covering up its own errors and inefficiencies. Yet, sour as he may seem, Oberg still believes that the United States and Russia could have a promising future as space partners provided both nations bring realistic expectations to the relationship. Congress- read this book

James Oberg is an unaffected, genuine expert on the subject. He has written thousands of articles and the like. He has also appeared frequently as a TV or news commentator on this subject. He has authored 10 books or more. This subject matter is right in his area of expertise. The breath and depth of his knowledge is hard to match. It is almost as if he was born to this field of expertise.
What is perhaps more amazing in this day of public cynicism is that he seems to keep his sources in that they continue to feed him material again and again. They must trust him. Is it necessary to remind the reading public of his writings on the Soviet downing of Korean flight 007 and how with time James Oberg was proven right?
The fires on MIR is an interesting topic. Oberg gives a detailed history of the fires in the Soviet space programs especially those inside the space capsules. The Soviets generated oxygen by burning solid fuel oxygen generators. These are the same type of mechanism that destroyed ValuJet flight 592 in Florida in 1996, he points out. He supplies a quote from a NASA official that the "American program experimented with a chlorate candle emergency breathing device... but it was dropped because they couldn't be sure it would not start a fire."
Another interesting topic is, the arming of the Salyut -3 space station. It was armed with a Nudelman air to air cannon designed for Soviet jet fighters. It was there as a contingency in case the Americans tried to take the Salyut station. Oberg also has a photo of the Soviet Soyuz survival kit which included a three barrel survival gun for firing bullets, shotgun shells and flares.
On the policy making level, Oberg supplies lots of information, facts and opinions bearing on the topic of Russian-American cooperation in space. I do hope members of Congress and the executive branch read this book.
For Oberg, space is his life. His destination is the second star on the right. Maybe he will bring us along on the trip.

Fun Reading but Incomplete

Oberg's book is required reading for anyone interested in the space station and our partnership with the Russians. Chatty and informative Oberg delivers a stream of detailed revelations about problems NASA and the Russians have chose to hide. In this role he serves as one of the few "gossip columnists" of the space program.
Two key themes of the book is Oberg's observation that 1) the International Space Station was a creature of politics rather than technical necessity, and 2) NASA deliberately ignored Russian deception and fraud. However the book falters when Oberg attempts to connect the gossip with the claims. The book falls flat in helping illuminate who were the authors of this strategy (other than some vauge paragraphs) and why NASA management and Congress decided to implement and ridigly maintain it for over a decade. Some insightful analysis about why Dan Goldin and George Abbey wrapped this albatross across their neck and were never able to remove it would have made this book an agent of change.
I only wish Oberg had developed as good a set of political instincts and contacts as he has inside NASA.

This book is garbage

Nothing personal, for those who give more than 2 stars for this book, you are either a friend of the author, got the book for free, or never really review it throroughly. Here are the reason why:
1. Nothing is new in this book that you can get it off the web
2. Equations were given without fully specify its component
3. You can't work the problem in the back of the chapter because there are no materials in the chapter to support it. You need your old engineering book in order to solve these problems
4. Problems were stated unclear and incorrect. For example, he ask to calculate an N-channel MOSFET transistor problem, but the figure he used is a P-channel. It seems like the author either pull these problems out of this behind or took these problems from other engineering books and change some values to make it different, but unfortunately, those values were unworkable.
5. Pretty thick book for a lot of garbage. If I need to work electrical or heat transfer problems, I'll go to my old engineering book at least those authors know their materials.

"Fundamentals of Microsystems Packaging" is an informative, well-written textbook, the first to cover this rapidly-evolving technology. Professor Tummala's latest book should appeal to only three groups: those who know a lot about microsystems packaging, those who know something about it, and those who know nothing about it.
Microsystems packaging specialists, who typically focus on one sub-specialty, will find this detailed exposition of the entire field broadening. Non-specialists with some general packaging knowledge will find here all that they need to fully understand and work with the key elements of microsystems packaging. Novices, students, and those in related technical fields will find a well-structured introduction that prepares them to deal with microsystems packaging.
This comprehensive textbook offers to all of the above groups a firm grounding in the diverse disciplines comprising microsystems packaging. Nineteen of the chapters share the title, "Fundamentals of ...". "Fundamental" means "a foundation," and that is what these chapters provide, covering the key elements of topics ranging from semiconductors to systems, including design, processing, materials, manufacture, testing, performance, reliability, thermal management, and environmental considerations.
For the specialist, who must build upon these foundations, each chapter includes a judicious selection of recommended further readings. For the autodidact, the scholar, or the flagellant, there are even homework problems to test your knowledge. Four chapters, covering optoelectronics, MEMS, RF packaging, and wafer-level packaging, lead the venturesome to the borders of today's knowledge, where they might glimpse the promised land, or just gape at the dark forests of ignorance.
Although the text is the child of fifty authors, the logical flow and smooth editing make it a unified work that speaks with one clear voice. Despite their diversity, the 2:1 ratio of academic to practitioner authors makes a good balance of technical rigor and practical experience. Talented illustrators provided a wealth of informative two-color pictures, charts, pictures, and diagrams.
In summary, despite my forty years in microelectronics research, engineering, management, and consulting, I learned new things every time I opened this book.

Good book in that it is very detailed, but it is probably too detailed for most people's requirements. You could probably save some money and find whatever specific information you need on the Internet; however, if you want a very detailed reference book close by this book may be for you.

First Time Volunteer Parent Coach? This is your book.

As a fledgling volunteer soccer coach, I had only a slight idea of what to do when signing up to coach a U-8 boys team. I picked up this book at the library and it was good enough to buy. There are a lot of good activities for all age groups, from peewees to high school. Some of them seem silly and unrelated to soccer, but the youngest of soccer players are still learning coordination, which is their left and right sides, and how to move in space.

The key to keeping kids playing and excited about soccer is to make it fun, while building critical skills. I think the authors did an excellent job in accomplishing both. My players enjoyed the activities (don't call 'em drills) I used from this book. I highly recommend this book to any parent thrust into a coaching role. There is great advice on building a practice plan, managing practices, and teaching players.

Anybody want to play Gladiator Ball? I've got a group of U-8's that can take on anyone, anytime, anywhere....

It's ok. I read it and it was useful but nothing more than what I can find them from online. There are a lot of drills here but I rather have 1/10th of what is listed with much more details on how to run them.

Controlling Pilot Error: FATIGUE by James C. Miller.

After reading the chapter on sleep biology and napping in this book, you may reconsider whether to take that afternoon or red-eye flight. In this slim volume, you will find information on how performance effectiveness drops from 98 percent in the morning to 80 percent or less when compromised by staying awake too long or by accumulating a sleep deficit. And it turns out there is a downside to automation in the cockpit--increasing the workload of monitoring responsibilities and decreased vigilance. This is an excellent primer on sleep even for the non-pilot. It includes a helpful discussion of the effects of drug sleep aids. Also included are examples of National Transportation Safety Board summaries of actual aircraft accidents and their possible causes.

This is one in a series of 10 books on the challenges pilots face. The other books in the series deal with such topics as weather, communications, automation, controlled flight into terrain, and training and instruction. Additional topics covered are checklists and compliance, maintenance and mechanics, and situational awareness.

Great information in this book. These helpful hints can be applied to any situation where there is great risk when in a fatigued state, not just flying, although it does cover time zone problems for commercial pilots, problems most people don't even think about. I kept this book after I read it. I found it an interesting read.

controversial

This book has been controversial for at least two reasons. The first reason is if colleagues are asked when to get this [thick, mostly outline format soft covered] text, some say right away for it can serve as a scaffold to "hang information on". And then there are those on the other side of the spectrum who say this book is difficult to take in for the junior folks on the service and should be reserved for those at the chief resident level who know these issues on several levels.
The second controversy is that this book has a title of "essential" when it might not cover all that is actually essential. And, as a corollary, what about information that is "nonessential"? Shouldn't the BC/BE head and neck surgeon be familiar with those issues as well?
Regardless of these issues, I have sampled several books and think this book does not have a contender in its class. I would highly recommend it IF one is going to buy a book about otolarynology, but not if they think that they have to get this book to be a knowledgeable house officer or ancillary professional. I bought this book as a PGY1 a few years ago and it has certainly been a handy text to have in the call room and to prepare for the inservice. This book should not be intended for medical students due to its density in relation to student rotation duration, or attendings in relation to their assumed familiarity with material.

I am a journeyman carpenter. I took trade math and got really good marks. I purchased this book as a review for future reference. I'm sorry but this is terribly written and is in serious need of being updated. Starts off by telling you how people now use computers for things (I 'm not kidding). It then proceeds to tell you why you might consider getting one and in the most painful way possible lists several ways computers are useful. A little further in it slams you with some math required for figuring out rafter length, no rhyme or reason, no building up to it just slam. Then proceeds to explain the math in a significantly more difficult way than we did in school. It then jumped to being able to solve a very simple math problem needlessly made complicated using a framing square and a straight board to figure out how much excavating a crew can do in 5 hours instead of 8. ... Did i mention it's really bad.

Highly unsuitable for students taking a technical vocational math course in a learning institution.
The text fails miserably in providing pure mathematical rules, methodology or algorithms for solving problems related to technical vocational math situations.
