Not for beginners

I'm giving this book a middling rating, but I don't feel like I'm really in a position at this point to judge its actual value.
What I can say -- and what anybody just getting started should know before acquiring this book -- is that the book is more assuredly *not* written for beginners. The fundamental style of the book presumes a pre-existing familiarity with a set of terminology and concepts, and can be quite terse in its explanation of concepts and examples. It strikes me as probably well-suited to those who have engaged fairly extensively in the study of technical analysis already, and who are looking for alternative analysis viewpoints.
To her credit, the author does provide considerably more insight than just technical analysis -- for example, summarizing the fundamentals connecting different markets. So I would think this book would be quite interesting to one who has a solid foundation in technical analysis, but lacks a bigger picture of the market. On the other hand, as at least one other reviewer commented, the book does jump around a lot in discussing these relationships, making it a somewwhat awkward path to that comprehensive picture.
However, the most significant point, for anybody who is a beginner, is that the book's subtitle "The Easy Way to Get Started" and it's cover description "Everything you need to know about technical analysis..." are misleading, inasmuch as it makes it seem as if it is targeted to, and suitable for, beginners. It is not.

Simplifying Technical Analysis

I was lucky to encounter Connie's work when I was just getting started with trading. The gem in this and her other writing is seeing her total dedication to uncovering the science of the markets.
She will never GIVE you ALL her secrets. Part of the message is do your work, study your market, learn your indicators and study timing. You will be slapped around by the market, and you need YOUR OWN disciplined approach to keep going when that happens. This book is not going to reveal a mechanical system that can be translated into instant trading success.
You won't find a targeted approach for one market...her approach works for all and any markets; that's why she includes charts and analysis for everything from stocks to fundamental housing data. The bottom line is that many free market activities can be charted and analyzed in much the same way as stocks or futures.
But there are very specific insights into the methods of a highly intelligent trader.... and you're challenged to rise to her level. This book and Technical Analysis for the Trading Professional give many specific insights into indicators and approaches: She points out features of indicators, how to choose non correlated indicators, simplifying "market geometry" and advanced considerations of support and resistance in instrument prices and in indicators, as well as target calculation--plenty of information, and simplified for an easy grasp of the subject.
I feel that this book provides an essential background and insight into how the market works. Whatever the level of trading you decide to do. I think a "non trader" can benefit too...we are all "at risk" of various markets throughout our lives. The charts of currencies and housing show other areas where a non trader could benefit from some technical analysis knowledge to avoid getting caught in a destructive cycle.

Should have been entitled, "All Around Technical Analysis"

...because Ms. Brown never gets to the point. She talks around the subject for 300 pages, but never gives the reader the how, what or why of TA. This excruciatingly frustrating book ends up with a discussion on pyramids and harmonic series - intriguing, but, since Ms. Brown never offers a thorough explanation of how to use these techniques, the discussion is completely useless.

This book provides nothing more than survey material to the subject. It would be a nice introduction for someone who wants to know something about TA, but is unhelpful to the serious investor seeking to learn how to apply TA methods to one's portofolio.

Best of an Indeterminate Breed

I have assigned this book to my graduate students in a Staffing class. I would not have assigned it if I did not think it was a good book.

However, I find myself telling them a few cautionary things:

1. Two weeks after the book came out, it was out of date. This field is moving very, very quickly and keeping up is a real chore...

2. The author is breathless and shameless in self-promotion. His writing style will remind you of why the dot-com bubble burst.

3. Many assertions are not backed up with organized study or proof.

4. It's still the best book I know of to cover this topic, unfortunately. If anybody out there knows of a better or more contemporary one, please post a review here...

A valuable addition to every recruiters desktop.

Having been involved in many aspects of Recruiting for a number of years I can emphatically state that this book is an excellent resource for new and experienced recruiters alike. It does not claim nor pretend to be a resource for all recruiting related topics, as it focuses specifically on harnassing the power of the Internet for recruiting. Readers will find the material to be engaging, well researched, intelligently organized and thoughtfully presented.
There has been a number of books written on this subject over the short but rapidly evolving history of this field and all have helped shape the Internet Recruiting Body of Knowledge. However, where this book truly differntiates itself is in its presentation and organization of information. The author, Mike Foster, (the founder and CEO of AIRS, a recognized global leader in e-recruitment training and information) and truly gives the subject matter the AIRS treatment.
For those who are not familiar with AIRS training, the AIRS treatment is my affectionate term for their tremendous focus on providing all of the information necessary needed to be successful, without unnecessary fluff or smoke and mirrors. Mike's book (much like their training) applies uncommon common sense to take the mystery out of what some consider to be a complicated area.
If you are new to recruiting and are looking for a book to explain all of the in's and out's of the talent acquisition life cycle, this book is not for you. However, if you are new to recruiting or if you are a recruiter and want to learn how to leverage the Internet for competitive advantage this is a great place to start. Make no mistakes, recruiting has been and will always be hard work and this book will not do your work for you, however it will provide any person who is interested the proper foundation for truly taking advantage of the Internet for finding and attracting critical talent, which is a huge competitive advantage for an employer of any size.

Comprehensive, Thought-Provoking Resource

Recruiting top talent has always been an important objective for employers. Over the past few years, we have not seen the competitive intensity in recruiting that we saw in the go-go years of the late 1990s because of the slowed economy. This quieter period has given technologists and strategists a chance to catch up, to develop new approaches, to refine new systems. The new designs for attracting preferred candidates were not even available a few years ago; now they will be essential for employers desiring to find, attract, and hire the best talent to achieve their objectives.
Finding applicants through newspaper advertising will be with us for a while, for some jobs. Even some of those jobs are now offered through major job boards. For the positions beyond low-skilled welders, fast-food burger flippers, and convenience store clerks, employers will increasingly use the internet to recruit. This shift shatters the myth that hiring is local; the web is world-wide. Recruiting is global.
OK, with this historical and future-focused concept in mind, how do we do this on-line recruiting? Foster's book tells us-step by step at a strategic level and at a tactical level. It is not a book for webmasters, recruiting site developers, or code programmers. This book delivers on the higher levels, providing company owners, executives, and managers a valuable insight into what needs to be done and why. Human resource executives will find this volume very helpful. Some HR managers will find it a great tool to open deeper discussion with their superiors; others will find it more valuable in their efforts to understand where their leaders are trying to go.
The book begins, appropriately, with some of the "big picture" of recruiting, then turns to the use of the internet. In Chapter 1, there is a list of stages to the process of e-recruiting: recruit your friends, create or enhance your organization's recruiting web site, attract the best candidates, find passive candidates, and assess your applicants. The organization of the book is different, which may throw off a reader expecting an expansion of the five stages. Foster explores various aspects of the recruiting website in Part Two, but Part Three is titled Advertise Your Job Openings. Part Four is Searching for Passive Candidates, but there is not a separate section on assessing applicants-which will be an increasingly important aspect of e-recruiting. You'll find a tremendous amount of valuable insight in these pages.
The book is seasoned with a wide range of resources, mostly presented (understandably) as website addresses. Some I recognized, others I'd heard of, and there were still some the author missed (like [...] for recruiting communities); but, this is a rapidly-changing field. Many readers will find themselves a bit overwhelmed and confused as they read this book. So much information all at once! Yes, that's the reality; and it's a good lesson. Read the book cover to cover, then go back with a highlighter and a pad (or note-taking computer file) to design the right strategy for your company. You'll be reading about cutting-edge ideas and resources, so don't expect to grasp it all right away. Commentary on trends and processes is well interwoven with things to do. Expect to be inspired, stimulated, and fully-loaded with work to do.

The Best Practical Guide In One Book

There are lots of books that do their best to guide you toward successful sailing but they never tell the whole picture. They all leave something out so you have to buy several books to get all that you need. This is the best and most complete single book on what it takes to do practical sailing, specializing in the tropics. Everything to think about... food and it's preservation,repairs to the boat, weather(cyclones) and forcasting, tropical diseases and how to stay healthy, and my favorite- pirates..how to stay away from them and be safe...of course much more. It's highly readable,too. If there was a fault I guess would have to say I wish there was more story telling of the author's experiences in his 25 year cruising time.But this book can't be beat for practical teaching and price. So I guess I read stories another time.

I have been a "wannabe" tropical cruiser for several years. I have read several 'cruising guides' and many magazine articles, but when I do go this is the one that will be on board. It is all there, well presented and in language we all understand. A gold-mine of solid, practical information, excellent value.

Too much time spent discussing the environmental damage to corals, and then the state of coral for each destination. If your goal is to dive at every stop, this is the book for you, if not, you can skip many parts of it. The other sections are excellent.

Well writen, easy to follow intor to the basic stamp. I enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it to others like myself who wanted an easy intro to the stamps.

I don't recommend it

I bought this book because it says it explains both the BS1 and BS2. Only a couple of pages at the beginning are dedicated to explain the Most Basic commands of both BS1 & 2. Almost the rest of the book are complex example programs (projects) with a LOT of commands which were not explained before. I don't recommend this book, specially if you're planning to use other than the BS1.
It would have been a much better book if the author dedicated more time explaining all the commands and what they do, instead of putting so many examples which are hard to understand without this knowledge.

About the Author
Terry T. Lankford was a Weather Specialist with the FAA for nearly 30 years, and is the author of three books in McGraw-Hill's PRACTICAL FLYING SERIES: UNDERSTANDING AERONAUTICAL CHARTS, Second Edition; COCKPIT WEATHER DECISIONS, and all three editions of WEATHER REPORTS, FORECASTS, AND FLIGHT PLANS. He also wrote AIRCRAFT ICING. A pilot since 1967, he holds single-engine, multi-engine, and instrument ratings, as well as an FAA Gold Seal Instructor certificate. An FAA accident prevention counselor, he earned the Flight Safety Award in 1979. Lankford also contributes articles to pilot periodicals.

A Very General Study of Weather Hazards

I had high hopes for this book when I bought it. The book promised large gains in my aviation weather knowledge. I actually felt a little underwhelmed to be honest. This is, in essence, an introductory level aviation weather textbook.
I am a current airline pilot flying MD-80's, and think that as a General Aviation weather resource, this book is OK. It would be particularly useful for someone studying for their Instrument rating or initial Commercial certificate. For jet transport operations, though, this book is only marginally useful.
This book does contain good information, but understand that it is not very detailed information (I read the entire book in two hours in a hotel room), and is marginally useful to experienced turbine pilots. The book is partly redeemed by numerous case studies, that show the relevance of the materiel. The case studies are very interesting, but lack depth. For better case studies I recommend the NASA ASRS monthly reports (blue sheets) that are mailed free to interested people. For better real world weather flying, stick with Richard Collins for GA or "Fly The Wing" by Jim Webb for turbine flying.

Advancing operators knowledge

It is rare to find an informative text book that has the capability of retaining a boiler operators interest, as this does. The question and answer format presents a challenge to the operating personnel that would be difficult to emualate in a conventional text book. Chattopadhyay has presented this reference book in a format that challenges the reader to broaden their knowledge.

Not for the layperson

Chattopadhyay, as my colleague points out, is no slavish devotee of the Imperial system of measurement. But what he does do is take the FAQs that many experts might have in relation to boilers and answer them in a way that is comprehensive and - for the expert, at least - probably quite helpful.
My own interest was in getting a slim little 85000 BTU combi with a 2 stage frost thermostat to protect against frost whilst minimising gas consumption, as well as a built-in expansion vessel for sealed system operation and an automatic bypass valve. My question? Simply, where to get one. To be fair, PC wasn't so good on this type of question, dwelling more on the mechanical elements of energy efficiency and so on. But for folk like me, there are always the search engines.
(For the record, I think an inch is about a metre and a half.)
