Robert O. Parmley, P.E., CMfgE, CSI, is Co-Founder, President, and Principal Consulting Engineer of Morgan & Parmley, Ltd., Professional Consulting Engineers, Ladysmith, Wisconsin. He is also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Construction Specifications Institute, the American Design Drafting Association, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and is listed in the AAES Who’s Who in Engineering. Mr. Parmley holds a BSME and a MSCE from Columbia Pacific University and is a registered professional engineer in Wisconsin, California, and Canada. He is also a certified manufacturing engineer under SME’s national certification program and a certified wastewater treatment plant operator in Wisconsin. In a career covering four decades, Mr. Parmley has worked on the design and construction supervision of a wide variety of structures, systems, and machines—from dams and bridges to municipal sewage treatment facilities and public water projects. The author of over 40 technical articles published in leading professional journals, he is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components; the HVAC Field Manual; the Hydraulics Field Manual, now in its Second Edition; the HVAC Design Data Sourcebook; the Mechanical Components Handbook; the Standard Handbook of Fastening & Joining, now in its Third Edition; and the Field Engineer’s Manual, now in its Third Edition, all published by McGraw-Hill.

Good intention

Good intention, but a bunch of maps without any explanation does not mean much. Moreover, in my case, I need to use a magnifying lens to see the small words because of the maps reduction.

Good book for those in and outside the industry

As a mechanical engineer working in an increasingly electronic world I find I have to continue to stretch my knowledge. So I bought this book to learn more about the making of computer chips. This is a great book that covers all the bases on the processes and practices. In fact, recently I had actual IC fab issues on my product and this booked helped me understand what I was dealing with.

Contains all the Classics!

I was first introduced to the mysteries of limits, differentiation, and integration in the Winter of 1966. I used a text no longer available, one that really stretched your abilities through the variety and difficulty of elementary problems offered up for exercise. Since that time, I have seen many a calculus book come and go where most contain the same old tired and unimaginative problem set. This book definitely fills that woeful gap. Not only does "How to Solve Word Problems in Calculus" present a great variety of classic derivative problems completely worked out, but it also presents the solutions in a step-by-step fashion, which helps the student thoroughly familiarize themselves with a basic problem-solving process as presented in an early chapter. One thing that I like is the emphasis on precise picture drawing that allows for crucial left-right brain integration--very important when trying to figure out exactly what quanity (and subsequently function) we are trying to optimize. If the book has a weakness, it is the lack of really new and innovative problems in integration. But, integration has traditionally been a subject that eludes elementary applications other than the usual geometric fare. Don't let this stop you from buying this great and valuable teacher resource!

Pearson is the president of the Center for Archetypal Studies and Applications and the author of The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By (1998) and a coauthor of Magic at Work: Camelot, Creative Leadership, and Everyday Miracles (1995). Mark is a consultant specializing in business strategy and brand management. Pearson's work is based on Jungian psychology, which holds that archetypes are forms or images of a collective nature, which occur not only as myths but also as individual products of the unconscious. Understanding brand power through archetypes

For those marketers who have always had a secret predilection for using their intuition, who've harbored a belief in the hidden power of the right 'fit' in a message - The Hero and The Outlaw reads like a long, drawn-out ahhhhhhhh. Like scratching an itch. Like constant light bulbs going off in your brain, one after another. It drives to the central question behind all the 'buzz' about branding - in what exactly, and where exactly, resides the buried power of a brand? What is its hidden deep source? How come a brand 'pushes our buttons?'
The simple, graceful and very fitting answers are given by Margaret Mark and Carol Pearson in their new book The Hero and The Outlaw - Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes. When a brand taps into one of their twelve major archetypes, and does so in a way that feels right and appropriate, then the brand 'works.' Consumers respond, a channel of understanding is opened, the message is received.
The twelve archetypal categories which Pearson and Mark use for their analysis are: Creator, Caregiver, Ruler, Jester, Regular Guy/Gal, Lover, Hero, Outlaw, Magician, Innocent, Explorer, Sage. For instance: Williams-Sonoma is a 'creator' brand, and so is going to carry meaning and resonance for consumers who want to craft something new in their lives. Ivory Soap is the 'purest' example of the Innocent archetype. And if Nike is a Hero brand, you can be sure that the Harley-Davidson brand is an Outlaw archetype.
While all the right brain, intuitive marketers are delighted to consider such a workable and insightful way of thinking about branding, rest assured, their more left brain associates have not been 'left' behind. In an wonderfully holistic way, the archetypal wisdom of Jungian author Carol Pearson is met, like yin with yang, in the rigor, testing and real world measurements of Margaret Mark during her 16-year career at Young & Rubicam's senior levels. Like a one-two punch, Pearson and Mark support intuition with quantitative reason, and round out data with connected imagination.
I learned from this book. Advertisements look different to me now, and I can better perceive when a brand is being true to its self and effective in its message (and sometimes, I now know why). Pearson and Mark's idea that using archetypal patterns can be a more morally responsible way of branding, is a small but intriguing thought, offered almost parenthetically.
Very few business books lead me to what feels like an 'epiphany.' (Tom Peters' Search for Excellence did when I first read it in 1989; so did Sally Helgesen's The Female Advantage in 1990, and Margaret Wheatley's Leadership and the New Science a few years ago.) To me, this book feels as though it contains the same sort of breakthrough thinking, but in terms of how to communicate, with power, in an information-saturated world. I highly recommend it. This title provides innovative marketing concepts

Margaret Mark and Carol S. Pearson have wrote a book combining archetypal, mythic figures with modern day marketing. There are many time-tested concepts behind the consumer products we buy and use everyday. At times, we may feel a connection to a product because it's association has been in our archetypal consciousness for many years.
One criticism I have is the book gets into a little too much detail about specific projects and study methods. This happens when the authors talk about clients they have worked with. I don't mean the book is one long advertisement for their marketing consultant services, it is not.
You might appreciate how they relate a core group group of archetypes and how they relate to contemporary consumers. Such as Outlaw, Hero, etc. I found myself comparing these with what is generally called "demographics" and looking for possible fits, depending on the product or services sold.
What I very much appreciate is their mention of those who "manage meaning" have a responsibility to act ethically and think through their advertising and marketing campaigns. Having worked in consumer products and now in advertising, I know this is often not the case.
You'll get a lot out of this read.

Not long before Christmas I received a copy of Universal Design Handbook. On first inspection I thought it was going to make a great door stop, or hold back for the overflowing collection papers and pamphlets accumulating on my shelves. However, after only a couple of months I already find that it is regularly dipped into. This massive document is a fantastic and fascinating resource for researchers who are interested in the subject of universal and inclusive design and something of this type has been long awaited by the design research community. It also provides a good resource for those who wish to bring universal deesign into their design teaching, giving them sound information on which to base any teaching program.

This is probably the most comprehensive reference work on universal design to date. It brings together writings from an international panel of experts in the field, each being thoroughly referenced and providing an excellent entry point for further research. The book, with its 69 international contributions, addresses a wide selection of universal design projects that range from an office work station, to interior architecture, buildings, landscape and all the way to parks and wilderness areas. It also includes some chapters that relate to product design such as the one on universal design in automobile design. The research questions, methodologies and findings presented are focused on how universally designed products and environments can be created to be usable by most people, regardless of ability/disability, health, gender, ethnicity, or cultural context.

Though the emphasis is on the application of universal design in the build environment, there is a mass of material that is pertinent to anyone researching or teaching universal or inclusive design. The fact that it covers a wide set of issues across the various design communities is especially useful as it helps designers and researchers place their own practice and interests in context with approaches in other design fields.

In my role as a researcher of inclusive design I have found each contribution to hold something of relevance, which has added to my body of knowledge and contributed to my own research activities. As a design teacher I have been able to draw on the experience of others in framing my own teaching programme, the parts 7 and 8 on education and case studies being particularly useful. And as a practising designer I have been very interested to compare my own experiences with those of others as outlined in Part 6.

I am sure that in the USA the additional CDROM is also very useful, enabling readers to access and understand the laws that have driven some of the universal design activities to date. Regrettably there is no equivalent disk for European, UK, Japanese or other country's legislation.

I would not recommend the book as an introductory document on universal design as it would overwhelm the unitiated. It is, however, very comprehensive and in bringing together the work of the major researchers gives access to this essential information to a much wider audience than that which regularly participates in the universal design dialogue. WOLFGANG F.E. PREISER is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati and a consultant in building performance evaluation. He is published widely, with 12 books on topics ranging from postoccupancy evolution to facility programming and design research in general. He has lectured worldwide and won numerous awards and honors, including the Fulbright Fellowship, Progressive Architecture Annual Award for Applied Research, Rieveschl Award for Scholarly and Creative Works at the University of Cincinnati, EDRA Career Achievement Award, and others. ELAINE OSTROFF, Ed. M. is the Founding Director of the Adaptive Environments Center and an international consultant on universal design education. She is the Program Chair for Designing in the 21st Century II: An International Conference on Universal Design, and is director of the Global Universal Design Education Project. The publication of the Universal Design Handbook makes accessible the breadth of recent research on Universal Design. The editors have produced a remarkable resource, bringing together a collection of readable essays by the world's leading experts on Universal Design, "the design of environments and products that respect the diversity of human beings." (xvii)
The Universal Design Handbook is a clearly organized reference book. It begins by defining its subject, proceeds with its history and accomplishments, presents research and case studies, and concludes with a look to the future. Web accessibility and telecommunications are presented as industries positioned to integrate universal design principles in their own infancies, while the notion of "smart technologies" promises opportunities for a universally designed future.
As an architect and educator, I applaud the arrival of this valuable resource, both its practical, highly-focused research and its theoretical, broad inquiry. I appreciate the extensive case studies linking the theories and research with practice. Principles are illustrated with examples of built environments that go beyond the minimum requirements of codes, showing how accessible design can enhance a space for all users and/or presenting ways accessible features can be integrated into a pleasing spatial composition. These studies suggest the need to include questions about the ways people experience a space or object when programming a project, so that the resulting products are created to be usable by most people, regardless of ability/disability, health, gender, ethnicity, or cultural context. Examples range in scale from simple hand-held industrial pieces such as scissors to transportation systems such as buses and subways to entire landscapes and cities. This range requires the support of individual designers and clients as well as public, governmental support and corporate recognition that the goals of human-centered, universal design benefit both the citizenry and the economy. Various methods for reaching these constituencies are discussed in a number of chapters, primarily in "Part 4: Public Policies, Systems and Issues."
The handbook arrived just as I was teaching a Spring 2001 course entitled "Social Agenda in Design and Architecture." In addition to the important facts discussed in chapters such as "Principles of Universal Design," students responded to many of the case studies I presented, based on readings from the handbook. Students were reassured that social responsibility and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive, particularly when shown examples from high-design cultures such as Italy, France and Japan. One of the goals of the course was to challenge students to see social concerns as design opportunities and as a basis for contemporary theories of form-making. In addition, I was able to document the relationship of Universal Design to the other hot topic: Sustainable Design. The chapter "Sustainable Human and Social Development: An Examination of Contextual Factors" outlines how a sustainable built environment is necessary for sustaining human accessibility as well as for benefiting the natural environment. Conversely, the Universal Design movement reminds the Sustainable Design initiative that together their goals are truly human-centered.
In addition, at one faculty meeting we used the distinction between " injection and infusion" as defined in the chapter "Advances in Univeral Design Education in the United States" as a means of considering strategies for bringing Universal Design and other social issues into the curriculum. The discussion considered examples from other programs and sought ways to adapt these to fit the BAC program. As a result of the approach, our discussion was seen as part of an education-wide paradigm shift toward a user-centered design philosophy.
The Universal Design Handbook is an important, timely text that is a welcome and much needed resource for those committed to making this new century accessible to all.

Kenneth J. Fridley, Ph.D., is a Professor in and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

David G. Pollock, Jr., P.E., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington.

Kelly E. Cobeen, S.E., is the Principal of Cobeen & Associates Structural Engineering, Lafayette, California.

Excellent wood design reference

I bought this book for an independent study course in wood design while obtaining a MS in Civil Engineering. The book is well organized, does an excellent job of explaining the hows and whys of wood design and provides excellent design examples. I would highly recommend it. To get the most of this book, you should also have a copy of the IBC, ASCE 7, and the Wood Council codes.

Only for engineers

I gave this book 4 stars, because I'm sure it is very good for it's purposes; but it did not fit mine.

I was hoping for a good book that is better than Graphic Guide to Frame Construction (For Pros By Pros) but this one is far too technical.

It requires that you have taken engineering courses such as Statics. I flipped through it, but hope to return it.

I did like some of the information that I saw; For instance it tells you not to use metal connectors with a large amount of vertical screws on Glu-lam beams, but it is mostly the math behind the building.

Please, some young smart engineer buy Graphic Guide to Frame Construction (For Pros By Pros) and write a better book, I'll buy it I swear.

I have the 2009 International Residential Code For One-and-Two Family Dwellings: Soft Cover Version, and Wood-Framed Shear Wall Construciton; An Illustrated Guide coming in the mail, so maybe that will help.

The Framing books are too dumbed down, and the engineering texts are too mathematical in nature.

Can anyone recommend a good book for smart young contractors willing to learn?
