Rapid fire with a couple bad apples

The authors of this book seemed a bit sidetracked when composing the 1000+ questions contained within its 200+ pgs--perhaps they should have narrowed their scope and focused more on quality than quantity; that is, creating more CORRECT answers and valuable answer discussions, neither of which are present very consistently in this volume.

There are many good questions which help to solidify key concepts in micro/immuno/virology/mycology/parisitology, all in seperate sections, however there are also numerous misleading and/or bad questions which aid in discoloring the rest of this volume. A question may ask, for instance, which of these is "most correct"; the answer will be wrong, and the explanation will consist of a scant exlpanation of why three of the other answer choices were correct. Confusing and misleading.

Otherwise it is a valuable resource, and if you know enough to know which questions are bad questions, it can be reviewed very quickly and to valuable effect.

Excellent addition to the PA Literature

This a tremendous effort on the part of the editors and multiple contributing editors. The format is subsystem based with extensive attention to standard formatting for each subject area. The major primary care maladies in each anatomical subsystem are covered in a clear, concise and easy to read format. Excellent reference for any practitioner. The contributing author list reads like a who's who in Physician Assistant education.

I found this review book an excellent source of knowledge and simple to understand. This book by passes all the intricate biochemical details and present the meat and potatoes so to speak. The wisdom of the pearls make this book unique. I recommend this book to any professional in a primary care setting.

About the Author
Michel Poulin has gained his knowledge in the CBC Engineering laboratories, working for 14 years as a Technology Evaluation Engineer, then as a Supervising Engineer in charge of the Technology Evaluation Group. He is an active participant in the SMPTE and IEEE standardization committee activities. He is a Fellow of the SMPTE. Nice job

This book is very good. Its four parts are very easy to search: analog audio, digital audio, analog video and digital video. They cover all of the existing aspects. As a university teacher, I use it for my course on Television Systems, but I think it is useful for an audio course, or a comprehensive audio and video course. I still think that books like these should have a spanish translation, for my students who do not read english.

The name is a little misleading - the book is really about television, and digital video (JPEG,MJEPEG, MPEG-1,MPEG-2 etc.) and digital audio and computer aspects of such. Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding/decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with digital video production, digital video equipment design or just wants to know exactly how it works.

This is a Hybrid book - gives too much information to be a intructory book, but not enough information to be able to implement anything. the book covers a lot of grounds, from detialed description on analog television to general details on mpeg and more, and short intruductory to a lot of topics, like firewire, scsi, ethernet, pci , etc...

We all depend on various means of transportation for mobility in our daily lives: to travel to and from work, school, shopping centers, restaurants, financial institutions, medical facilities, cultural and sporting events, and the homes of family and friends, among many possibilities. Transportation has evolved into many forms in response to the needs and wants of residents, particularly in concentrated urban areas. In "Urban Transportation Systems: Choices for Communities," Grava provides a comprehensive view of a wide range of transportation options available to urban residents. His intent is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each transportation mode to help stakeholders make informed selections appropriate for their communities.

Grava begins with an overview chapter presenting common criteria for selecting urban transportation modes. This is followed by 16 chapters devoted to the various modes, including walking, bicycles, motorcycles and scooters automobiles, paratransit, taxis, buses, bus rapid transit, trolleybuses, streetcars and light rail transit, monorails, heavy rail transit, commuter rail, automated guideway transit, waterborne modes, and special modes. After these chapters, Grava provides an integrating chapter that focuses on intermodal transfer options. The concluding chapter reminds us of the challenges ahead and offers constructive suggestions for better transportation systems and services.

The strength of the book is its comprehensive coverage of urban transportation modes. While Grava has done a remarkable job in presenting an extensive discussion of urban transportation ideas, the book could enhance its value by amplifying some of the topics. First, the interdependency and interplay between transportation and land use could use even more emphasis. Grava recognizes that "transportation systems and land use are two sides of the same coin"(p. 11) ...

Nevertheless, "Urban Transportation Systems: Choices for Communities" is an excellent introductory book for policymakers, planners, transportation engineers and others interested in understanding the range of transportation modes. Given the intended purpose of this book, Grava has succeeded. It is not a complete package with conclusive solutions to urbantransportation problems, but rather a resource that could provide a sound basis for identifying and selecting suitable transportation modes.

"The fundamental premise of this review," writes Grava, "is that all modes are good, but only in their proper place.."

. The treatment is semi-technical, more detailed than is likely toappeal to the general public but not at the level of mechanical or traffic engineering. The author negotiates the many controversial areas of this subject with aplomb, including whether bicycle lanes are a good idea and what costs auto users do and do not pay..

. "Gasoline taxes and user charges cover less than two-thirds of all the tangible costs," he writes, "if, besides the construction and maintenance of roadways, highway patrols, traffic management, emergency response, and police investigations are also included," and even less if parking, accident costs, and pollution are added..

. On the other hand, "if the overwhelming part of the society is the beneficiary of this assistance, then they are simply shifting their own resources from one budget class to another, and they have the right to do that. And, if a rigorous cost-benefit analysis were to be demanded, the American public would easily see sufficient benefits in this situation to justify the costs.."

. The bulk of the book is devoted to details of practice rather than controversy. Two useful appendices define rail terms and suggest the best places to examine particular modes or approaches in operation.

About the Author

Andres Duany, FAIA, CNU, is a founding principal of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ). DPZ is a leader of the New Urbanism, an international movement that seeks to end suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment. Since 1980, DPZ has designed more than 300 new towns, regional plans, and community revitalization projects. Duany is cofounder of the Congress for New Urbanism and the recipient of several honorary doctorates and awards, including the National Building Museum’s Vincent J. Scully Prize and the Richard H. Driehaus Prize.

Jeff Speck AICP, CNU, LEED-AP, Hon. ASLA, spent 10 years as director of town planning at DPZ, where he led or managed more than 40 of the firm’s projects. Subsequent to the publication of Suburban Nation, he was appointed director of design at the National Endowment for the Arts, where he created the Governors’ Institute on Community Design, a program that brings smart growth techniques to state leadership. After four years at the Endowment, he founded Speck & Associates, a design consultancy serving public officials and the real estate industry. He is a contributing editor to Metropolis magazine.

Mike Lydon CNU, is an urban planner, writer, and livable streets activist. Before founding The Street Plans Collaborative, an urban planning firm specializing in alternative transportation and the public realm, he worked for DPZ, the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition, and Smart Growth Vermont. Authors Andres Duany, Jeff Speck, and Mike Lydon have created The Smart Growth Manual, a resource which not only explains the overarching ideals of smart growth, but a manual that takes the time to show smart growth principles at each geographic scale (region, neighborhood, street, building). The Smart Growth Manual bounces back and forth (in a beautifully organized manner) between steps for the implementation of smart growth and key concepts. The format of The Smart Growth Manual allows for each concept to be referenced and reviewed quickly (each concept is explained in about half a page).

I found The Smart Growth Manual to be the type of reference that you would throw in your bag before heading to your community association meeting or grab on your way to a city council hearing about a new development. The information is presented in such a simplistic, uncluttered format that you can use it almost like a dictionary. Instead of wondering whether a particular idea really is smart growth you can flip to it in the manual and understand how the concept would work and how it relates to other principles of smart growth. More importantly it can be used to better articulate community goals through providing an accessible guide to smart growth in an attainable format for charrettes, community meetings, etc.

To make The Smart Growth Manual all the more enticing, the pages are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper and it's pretty much pocket sized (so you don't have to lug around yet another huge manual in addition to ordinances and the like). The pages feature vivid illustrations and photographs of each concept so it's not a struggle to understand or explain a concept. I highly recommend The Smart Growth Manual as a part of any community participant's or urban planner's desktop references.

Supremely useful--with a few suggestions for the next edition

Duany and company are architects so their focus on design is highly useful. Echoing other on-the-ball reviewers here, the book is very well organized, easy to follow and leads directly to application.

If the authors ever read customer comments, I would like to suggest the following should the book be updated:

1. Our country's population is growing, but it also aging. Over the next 20 years, the aging of the population may be more significant to planners than "just" growth (which is inevitable, despite the silly claims of other reviewers). There has to be a "Smart Aging" perspective this country needs to adopt because older Americans have different needs--not lesser needs, different needs that should be addressed.

2. Include a section on the behavioral side of Smart Growth--while a necessary component of getting people out of their cars, design by itself is insufficient to get people out of their cars. What incentives, what kind of education and outreach needs to take place for the public and, perhaps most importantly, elected officials. Most local officials aren't particularly brave. They need help.

REGIS (BUD) BATES has more than 35 years of experience in telecommunications and management information systems (MIS). He oversees the operation of TC International Consulting, Inc., a full service management consulting organization. He has been involved in the design of major networks including LANs and WANs. For the past two years, he has devoted much of his development and training activities on the convergence of voice and data communications. Included in these developments, Bud has been training numerous CLECs on the integration of voice and data. He has recommended and implemented several training programs (in-house) using all the technologies that are converging as a base model. Included in this list are several training programs that carry the organization's internal certification. His many topics include both basic and advanced courseware on voice, data, LAN, WAN, ATM, SONET, T1/T3, VoIP, and Voice over Data Protocols (FR, ATM, and so on).

Badly written and explained

This is by far the worse book I have ever read to-date. The book jumbles the explinations and is badly explained and lasid out. There are no layer-by-layer explinations that are clear, concise and easy to understand.Save yourself the money.

Marred by grammatical and technical typos

This book "could" have been a great book had Mr. Bates proofread it once before publishing it. Having read GSM and GPRS papers before reading this book, I have to say that this book is replete with technical snafus [a case in point for those who suspect is on pg. 30 third paragraph of the Introduction to GSM chapter "paging message sent over PAGCH"] Now anyone with half a brain knows that
1. PAGCH is a GPRS logical channel NOT GSM.
2. It is an Access Grant channel NOT a paging channel which in case of GSM is PCH and PPCH in GPRS.
Now someone new to GPRS would be confused as hell after reading this [I admit I was confused for a couple of minutes too :-), since I am not supposed to be the expert but Mr. Bates was]
Structure wise the book is okay but needs a stringent review of the rambling grammer and the blatant mistakes. IMO its not worth forking 60 bucks. If Mr. Bates is reading this, I adjure you sir to take some time off from your speaking tours and correct the mistakes in this book.
Am giving it two stars for good layout. Taking away three stars for incorrect content.

GPRS Made clear

Not only is this book precise and educational, I will be able to refer back to it several times through out my career.
It explains the multiable layers in laymen's terms. I am impressed with the way the book starts out with the basics and leads the reader into the newer technoligies.
Not only did it help me to understand, GPRS technology, but also goes into detail about the protocols that can ride on it, Frame, VPN's, IP etc.
Not unlike the authors other publications, this book can be used as a tool. I highly recommend this book.

Hair can be used to express cultural, sexual, and religious individuality. Disorders of hair growth that compromise individual expression may affect self-esteem, social functioning, and quality of life. Deviations of hair growth may also be a manifestation of internal disease and thereby a vital diagnostic clue for all clinicians. This textbook of hair disorders, now in its second edition, affirms that diagnosis and treatment are possible in most cases. The editor, Elise Olsen, is a dermatologist from Duke University Medical Center, in North Carolina, and past president of the North American Hair Research Society. She is responsible for numerous publications on the subject of hair disease and, in particular, androgenetic alopecia (common baldness). The contributors to this book are leading dermatologists and dermatopathologists, primarily from North America, with one Australian and one British dermatologist adding international flavor. The three chapters on basic science cover embryology, anatomy, and the genetic and molecular control of hair growth and differentiation and are an important prelude to the remainder of the book, which is problem oriented. Chapters covering surgical approaches to alopecia (hair transplantation, scalp reduction, and flap surgery) blend nicely with chapters on hair-care products to provide a well-balanced and comprehensive therapeutic guide. A separate chapter is dedicated to hair disorders peculiar to blacks, such as traction alopecia and folliculitis (caused by braided hairstyles), ingrown beard hair (pseudofolliculitis barbae) and acne keloid (folliculitis keloidalis). Since the last edition of this textbook, eight years ago, there has been substantial progress in the understanding of hair biology, genetics, diagnosis, and therapeutics, and this is comprehensively detailed in the new edition. Some of the more exciting advances have occurred within the domain of molecular biology, including the unraveling of a number of mechanisms that control hair growth and differentiation, the identification of stem cells within the bulge of the follicle at the level of insertion of the arrector pili muscle, and even the genetic determinants of red hair. On the therapeutic front, two new treatments have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for men with androgenetic alopecia, namely finasteride and 5 percent minoxidil lotion. Systemic antifungal agents (for treating tinea capitis) have improved in efficacy and safety; new drugs are available to treat insulin resistance, which often underlies hirsutism; and lasers for hair removal are now widely available. A revised classification system for cicatricial alopecias (those involving scarring), based on the predominant inflammatory cell type, is clearly outlined, although effective therapy for this group of disfiguring diseases is still sadly lacking. This is a well-illustrated textbook (if you excuse the rare grainy photograph), considering the difficulties in capturing good-quality images of hair disorders. The chapters on hair-shaft defects, hair loss in childhood, and cicatricial alopecia are particularly outstanding in this regard. Tables are used liberally to help confine large bodies of information, and Web sites are listed when they would be useful to the clinician. Each chapter is extensively referenced right up until 2003. Personally, I would like to have seen more of the book devoted to the methods used to assess drugs that promote hair growth and to the relatively new clinicopathologic entity of chronic telogen effluvium, given its prevalence. This book is competitively priced and represents good value for the money. It will be of interest to a variety of clinicians and trainees, including dermatologists, endocrinologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, pediatricians, trichologists, and general and family physicians. Realistically, any department involved in the care of patients with hair disorders will be ill equipped without this excellent book. About the Author

Great Running Book

This is my favorite running book by far. Alberto Salazar is obviously trying to convey the best information he can to the reader and he does a great job. The book is weak in the area of training schedules but strong on virtually everything else. Most of the book has been useful to me on a daily basis. The only real complaint I have is that the author, like many of the older elite runners , does not personally do as much stretching as he recommends for the reader, does not use a heart rate monitor, etc. But he, as a coach, recommends it to other runners while not having a whole lot of personal experience and it shows. I use both so sometimes I read between the lines. He also does not understand cycling and its effect on the runner. A not uncommon malady among runners.

Great book for competitive runners

The audience for this book is those who have been running for six months or more, who have possibly completed a road race, and who now want to improve their racing times. The book's aim is to teach correct principles of training for faster times and to help runners apply those principles to a training program. The book succeeds well in its goal.
I particularly like the explanation of the four types of training (base, VO2max, running efficiency, and tempo) and the four types of speed work (long intervals, medium intervals, short intervals, and tempo runs). Salazar and Lovett clearly explain the purpose and methods for these runs, and how to incorporate them into an overall training program.
The material is, for the most part, scientifically correct and thorough. The book is authoritative, due Salazar's experience as a competitive runner and coach, and well written, due to Lovett's experience as a recreational runner and freelance writer. In fact, the book approaches training from two points of view: the elite competitive runner's (Salazar's) and the serious competitive recreational runner (Lovett's).
I especially like Salazar and Lovett's coverage of stretching, strength training, and injury prevention. As a marathoner, I would have like a stronger emphasis on that racing distance. If your focus is marathoning, I recommend "Advanced Marathoning" by Pfitzinger and Douglas.
The weaknesses of the book are few and minor. Some readers might want more example training charts. Some scientifically minded readers might want more cited research. In one case, the authors err in suggesting the method of glycogen depletion to proceed carbohydrate loading (the depletion phase is dangerous and ineffective), but that's about the only serious mistake I found in the book.
How does Salazar's book compare to others? Salazar's book has the same audience and purpose as Pfitzinger and Douglas's "Road Racing for Serious Runners," and Glover's "The Competitive Runner's Handbook." My favorite of the three is Glover's book, because of its complete and authoritative information, numerous helpful tables, predesigned and customizable training charts, and coverage of heart-rate monitors, injuries, cross training, and many other specialized topics. I would rank Salazar's book at the same level of quality and coverage as Pfitzinger and Douglas's book; both are excellent.
In summery, Albert Salazar's Guide to Road Racing is an excellent training guide for serious runners. If you want to improve your racing time, you'll love this book.

Great resource book for all road runners: beginners & elite

Since Alberto Salazar was a former world-class runner
himself, before retiring from competitive running, this
book is definitely worth checking out. It also helped that
elite runners like Bill Rodgers and Mary Decker Slaney also
had positive comments regarding this book.
This book is useful because it takes you from preparing
race, the race itself, and the post-race routines. It also
discusses injuries, and how to deal with them, and other
associated topics, like the psychological aspect of running,
and basics like weight training, crosstraining and nutrition.
If you're a beginner or even a veteran runner, you will
find useful advice, because there was a few things I picked
up in this book that I don't recall seeing in other running
books, and viceversa. If I had a complaint, is that it only
had a sample training schedule for someone training for their
first marathon, not including his own elite schedule when he
was running 120 miles or more weekly. This schedule was not
of any use to me, because my weekly training mileage already
exceeds the highest weekly mileage suggested in the book.
However, despite this, it is well worth the investment,
if you plan to enter a road race at some point in the future.
The topics are logically organized in a chronological fashion
that makes the book easy and simple to read. FYI, if you want
a sneak peek, here's a look at the Table of Contents, and you
can decide if this book is for you or you can take a pass and
look for another book that will fit your goals more suitably.

Coleman’s design work has won numerous awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Institute of Business Designers (IBD), the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and ID Magazine.
