Errors in a good book

This book helped me get through word problems in math when I was in college. When a friend of mine was having trouble with math, I recommended this book to her. I was dissapointed to read from another reviewer that there were errors in the first two math problems. So, I ordered the book and lo and behold I found the errors. If you can forgive this fault from the author, you can benefit from his excellent advise on "how to" approach math problems, i.e., he shows you how to take the mystery out of it. I still appreciate the book and how it helped me get through math at the higher levels.

How to Solve Word Problems in Mathematics by David Wayne, 2001 edition, is a solid text in spite of some editing errors..

Good points :

Each (of 5 chapters) covers a specific type of mathematics problem
Examples with completely worked solutions for every type of problem
A 50-question miscellaneous problem drill with answers

A brief review of solving equations(7 pages) is added.

Not so positive aspects : editing errors which can provoke hairpulling for a student , answers without explanations for the 50-question drill.

It is not designed as a textbook that presents information to be learned for the first time. Guidance by a teacher or skilled person is advisable..

Errors

In the first chapter, the first set of practice word problems numbers 2 and 4 are just WRONG. I took the book back to the bookstore at that point, and don't have time to count the errors in the book, but wish I did. This is a dangerous book for anybody who is struggling with mathematics; the student is going to come away more confused.

Don't Just Read It, Do it!

After founding a leading market research firm and teaching New Product Development at Harvard, I found this book so compelling that our firm has completed a review of our entire new web research product strategy, and come to some startling and highly productive insights on how to proceed and succeed. It is by far the most practical, in-depth guide to achieving competitive new product development strategies I have ever read.
The book shows clearly how to answer the critical questions: 1) Where do we want to go, 2) How will we get there, and 3) Why will we be successful. It shows how to create a Core Strategic Vision that is the foundation for new product success. And it shows how to use that vision to create highly competitive and profitable product lines, particularly in high technology.
Having tested new product ideas for hundreds of companies over the last 25 years, it is difficult to think of more than a handful who couldn't have benefited from not only reading this book, but doing what it recommends.

Best Strategic Toolkit Ever Written

There are countless strategy books out there. Each one has an overriding framework that the entire book is based on, that often warrants only a 15-page article. This book is loaded with practical frameworks that together provide a thinking and creativity-channeling approach. Better yet, every framework has been proven in practice at dozens of companies by the author's implementation-based consulting firm. Each chapter is filled with examples from a broad range of technology-based companies. When applying these frameworks outside of technology-based industries and large companies just use common sense to strip them down to their essence and don't worry about the fancy techno-speak. You can also use most chapters as stand-alone strategy tools. I personally like "vectors of differentiation" and wonder how so many companies blow it when it seems like common sense. But then again if common sense were common, books like this wouldn't be needed. And then there's the issue of actually implementing what you come up with...

targeted for core products at large companies

I love this book: the concept of a "vector" for product
development is a terrific way to think about competition.
IMHO, this book is a must-read for all product managers,
product marketers and people involved in strategic decisions,
i.e. all senior executives.
That said, speaking as a five-time startup engineer, the advice
and examples in this book seem geared towards the core product
lines in larger companies, where you can credibly talk about
"two years from now" as opposed to wondering if you'll even be
in business, which is also the problem for new product lines at
large companies. The experience for the book comes from the
PRTM consulting firm, which was made famous for their work with
parallel product development at Intel. We hired them in the
early days at Inktomi, and found mixed success with their
process because we were terrified of immediate failure, and
they wanted to talk about version 3. Obviously, there's a
successful middle ground because Inktomi was a huge success in
the short term, but ultimately lost its strategic direction.

Resilience and ASD

When we think of our children on the autism spectrum, a social resilient mindset is not the first thing that springs to mind. In their latest book, Robert Brooks, Ph.D., and Sam Goldstein, Ph.D., explore strategies gleamed from their clinical practice working with children diagnosed with ASD and their families. Indeed, the focus for helping children develop this social mindset is on encouraging parents and other charismatic adults to establish empathetic communication and acceptance, rather than concentrating on the child's difficulties.

As they write:
"Parents strongly influence, however, whether children with ASD will develop the characteristics and mindset associated with resilience or whether they will be burdened by low self-worth, self-doubt, and a diminished sense of hope." (p.29)
The authors recognize the challenge of being an empathetic parent to a child"whose perceptions and behaviors are often strikingly different from our own." (p.32). Thus the authors provide real-life examples of how they've guided other families through the process, and helped them overcome the challenges they faced along the way. Once parents have faced the challenge of relating to their children in a way that doesn't cause the child to shut down, they are then given strategies to encourage children to solve the problems they are facing.

One of the strategies the authors promote I found particularly appealing- the notion of using `bubble-talk' to encourage a child to learn the difference between thoughts which may be vocalized, and those which are distressing or off-putting to others.

This technique was used with great success with a number of individuals to help develop more appropriate social interactions. Though we haven't personally encountered this problem yet, I know it is only a matter of time, and I will definitely be using this technique with both Pudding and Cubby.

A central tenet Raising Resilient Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders is the role of parents in nurturing"Islands of Competence" in their children. Many of us have noticed the way our children light up when they can demonstrate their talents. It just feels right to build on these skills, rather than constantly trying to remediate challenges. The authors describe promoting the special interests, or unique skills and experience that the individual has and using those as a basis for developing esteem and self-worth. For many children featured in the book, this was about taking an area of perseveration and allowing this knowledge to be showcased as a talent to be enjoyed by others, and a way of relating to peers. Of particular poignance was the way the therapists encouraged a ten-year-old boy with Asperger's to write a book describing how he dealt with his mother's death, which was subsequently displayed in the school library.

As many of us are aware, our children are all different, and what works for one may have opposite effect on another. Brooks and Goldstein advocate that we "consider potential roadblocks in advance...knowing that if one approach does no work, there are others that might, provides families with a very precious commodity: hope." (pp.171-2). Indeed, just because a strategy is not successful in our first attempt, it does not mean that it won't work later. Rather than seeing the problem of our child's behavior, or indeed- in our parenting- we should look at the ways we can address particular skills.

This book will be of particular use to parents whose relationship with their child could use some expert guidance to get it back on track, especially those who frequently find their well-intentioned efforts to help their children fix their problems and social deficits are rebuffed or have disastrous consequences. A guide to supporting and promoting a child's strengths and talents to allow them to champion adversity and develop the social resilience so essential for a positive outcome in adulthood.

"Children with ASD are capable of finding happiness, success, attachment, and comfort in adult life...this book will be of help to parents and other caregivers of children on the autism spectrum to attain this happiness and resilience." (pp. 248-9)

If our daughter is on the spectrum, what book should we start with?

Recently as a psychologist, I was meeting with a couple who had been referred by their daughter's preschool teacher because their 4 year old had symptoms that were possibly autism spectrum issues. They had been reading a lot about autism online and were almost convinced. They were not worried about the label, but they were very concerned about what to do to help their child.

They described an extremely bright, socially awkward girl. She was invited to parties but played by herself. She memorized the license plates of the cars of everyone her family knows. She was already reading and had trouble sleeping because she was worried a tornado might come while she was asleep.
Looking around my bookshelves which contain over 100 books about autism, the mom asked me, "So if she is on the spectrum, what should we read first?" She had spotted a book by Tony Atwood. I thought for a moment.

"Actually that's a good one. But the one I would recommend is not there, because I have the Kindle edition. It's 'Raising Emotionally Resilient Children with ASD.'"

Nice Ideas in here....

The book gives a nice review of what we should be doing as parents to help our children with ASD. I was able to highlight many things that I can look back at for quick reminders of what to say and how to phrase discussions when talking to our son. The book provides many useful tips and ideas to consider when helping our children deal with certain social situations.

About the Author
Edward R. Maher is the West Coast VP for Hawkins Associates Company, Inc., an avionics distributor with over 2500 dealers across the United States and parts of Europe. He began his career as an electrical mechanic in the Air Force, then worked as an avionics technician and Manager for Beech Aircraft Corporation, then later managed the Avionics shop at Crownair. Mr. Maher is the author of three other books on aircraft and is a contributing writer to Avionics News, Kitplanes, and Aviation Maintenance magazines.

Good but could be better

A better title for this book would be "Avionics systems for Pilots" or "An overview of aircraft radio systems". I am An Airframe and Powerplant mechanic and I had hoped that this book would assist me in troubleshooting Avionics problems but instead it only gives brief but detailed descriptions of the radios and how they operate. I would have loved a more in depth troubleshooting chart at each chapter and perhaps some more instalation and repair tips. I would recommend this book because there is nothing else out there that even comes close.. but I wish there was a second edition "Advanced Avionics Troubleshooting and repair"

Good Basic Tool For Pilots, Owners

For an aircraft owner or pilot this is a good basic tool to troubleshoot the most common problems while recognizing the symptoms. It also presents the accepted methods and techiniques of installation to avoid such problems. For the established professional avionics technician or aviation mechanic the book could go further. Therefore I rated the item four stars from the perspective as a pilot, owner.

Avionics Troubleshooting and Repair

As a FAA licensed A&P maintenance technician, I was expecting far more than the generic info that most A&P's receive with their training. Most of the content covered how the avionics worked. While there was some diagnostic/troubleshooting, it was at a very low level and did not go into much detail. There was a lot of text that could have been much more definitively explained with a flow chart. The normal repair info provided was to ship the possible defective unit back to the manufacturer for repair. In one word, what this book lacked is DETAIL!

In all fairness to the author, avionics diagnostics and repair is not an easy subject of cover. The cover says that the audience is for Pilots and Technicians. Having two diverse audiences is probably the problem. There is probably slightly more info than what is needed by the Pilot. However, the info is highly deficient for the Technician. This book is more of a Pilot book.

Mark M. Davydov received the degree of Diplom-cybernetician from the institute of Chemical Engineering in Moscow, Russia, and a doctor's degree in Computer Science with specialization in database software engineering from the Karpov Scientific Research Institute of Physics and Technology in Moscow, Russia. In his doctoral thesis he presented a method and a federated database architecture for integrating heterogeneous applications and data sources, a so-called "Common Operational Data Bank (CODB) architecture". Review by a senior software architect.

This book is overwritten and filled with jargon and acronyms. By acronyms, I don't mean commonly used ones like ERP, CRM, B2B, B2E, and B2C but rather ones like EEP, EMP, BIP, BCE, UIP, EAI, PCSB, A2A ODS, KRC, EII, EBSTA, VE, DW, CPF, TPRC, MTDCAA ... I could go on (and on). If you enjoy reading acronyms and hopelessly convoluted, pompous, rambling, unfocused prose, then look no further and buy this book. Otherwise, at least preview it before ordering.
The narrative is very abstract and non-specific. There are no concrete examples or business cases. The author makes many generalizations about technology and business without backing them up. Portals are not even discussed until a quarter of the way in -- before that there is a seeming endless primer on e-business. Obvious and widely accepted facts are presented and repeated many times. Everything is repeated many times.
The author suggests that this book might be suitable for a Masters-level student. I'll give him that it reads like a textbook, but that doesn't HIDE the fact there is very little information here and what is here is nearly inaccessible due to the style of writing.
I finished this book because I though that it would get better at some point. It didn't. I've read hundreds of computer-related titles about software architecture, development methodologies, programming, and technology in general, and this is in the bottom 10%.

Don't Loan it to Anyone You will Have to Buy Another

After I purchased the Teacher's Calendar, I stayed up late into the night finding great things to share during the next school year. I shared it with my teaching partner so she and I could plan some activities. She took it on vacation and was going to get it back to me in a few weeks. She wasn't quite finished a few weeks ago. Today, she just called and said she was mailing me a check since she had so much marked - couldn't I just get another one. So, I am gladly purchasing another copy and I can't wait to use it next year. I am really excited that my partner and I see the benefit in the mini-lessons that this book provides on so many subjects.

Attention Educators: AN AWESOME RESOURCE!

Principals, Teachers, School Staff: LISTEN UP!
This book is an AWESOME resource. At our small school (staff of 18), we have a faculty meeting EVERY DAY. We start the day together with prayer (we're a religious-affiliated school), and a brief session with "The Teacher's Calendar." It's a hoot!
We share the trivia, guess at the famous people's birthdates and ages, and use the facts (every now & then) with students.
This can be great for current events, "this day in history" PA announcements, or use the special events to determine your "words for the day" (that's what we do over the PA at the end of every day), or just stay in tune with everyday events.
P.S.: Teachers & Staff: this would make a great "start of the school year" gift for your principal! (hint, hint).

It's just a desk, of field, reference.

I've read several other of the reviews, and feel the need to add a little to the conversation.

This book will not make you into an engineer if you don't have the foundation knowledge required. It is a desk reference, useful mainly for a quick review, of principles outside your primary area of engineering practice, when you need a quick refresher.

I am a degreed and licensed Civil Engineer, but I am primarily a Construction Engineer. I use this book to get myself back upto speed on topics that I haven't dealt with in a while, and to do field checks on designs I'm trying to build before I call the Design Engineer. I've got several hundred text books, and years worth of journals, and technical reports available in my office. They don't fit in my breifcase and travel to the field well. The handbook does.

I wouldn't rely on the knowledge contained in this book alone, to execute a design for any complex or critical project. I doubt that any competent professional would, or should.

All said, it is worth every penny you spend on it.

A civil engineer's review - this book is a good buy

The Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers is a comprehensive single volume book. This book is divided into 23 sections covering entire gamut of civil engineering. In first few chapters it deals with design management, specifications etc. These chapters are quite informative. It also describes various construction materials in a lucid form. But the chapter on structural theory should have more elaborately presented. Many aspects of advanced structures such as plate, shell etc. are not discussed. Finite element method is almost untouched. This book does not contain too many numerical examples. Rather it tells you how to take decision. For example, it tells you how to choose structural system for multistory building, but does not tell how to analyze the same. Geo-technical engineering section is also little bit concise. Concrete design section is good but a number of worked out problems would have made it better. Same goes for steel design section. Surveying was featured in very lackadaisically. Building engineering section is well written with very good general descriptions. Transportation, water resource and environment parts are also well covered. Coastal engineering is just touched. In overall this book is a good buy. But this book won't be much useful to all because it is written only in American code. What I dislike most about this book is that it is not written in metric units.

Still the best Civil Handbook

The fifth edition update mainly reflects changes in code requirements for structural engineering. Other sections seem barely changed from the fourth edition. The water resources chapter has several misprinted tables. Use the corresponding tables out of the fourth edition.
Generalle well-written and easy to follow. Useful as a supplemental study reference for the Civil PE Exam.
Could use a good bibliography.
