Excellent for Boat Buyers

I have never owned a boat and this book opens the eyes of the new comer to boating when it comes to buying a boat. Lots of good tips for the buyer, and even someone selling a boat could be helped by this book.
The writer is concise, and he puts in lots of lists to help with the buying project. Follow the list and you will do a lot better in looking over the prospective boat. Simple terms are used, and the terms that are common to boating are explained in an easy to read fashion.
The best part of the book is how the author explains the insiders tips for buying a boat. The title isn't kidding. The writer really lets you in on the scoop of how the boating dealerships work and how they get you to buy a boat a their price. He warns the reader that there are no standards in the boating industry (at least nothing comparable to the auto industry) and he points out how to arrive at a competent buying decision. What to look for in the sea trial is an excellent portion of this buyer's manual.
I recommend this book to anyone new to boating who is even thinking about purchasing a boat.

Good and Bad

I found the author's discussion of the pros and cons of buying a new or used boat helpful. Furthermore, his thorough checklist of things to check on a both a new and used boat make me feel more confident when looking for a boat the first time. Buying a boat is different from an automobile during the sales process, and this is discussed at length.
The book promised to discuss all of the different boat types and describe the boat building process. However, I was sorely disappointed that he's limited to think that all boats are made of fiberglass. I'm looking for a aluminum boat for fishing, possibly a jet, for fishing the shallow rivers and streams of the Northwest. Welded aluminum boat are the rule, with some riveted aluminum hulls. I was hoping for a discussion on what to look for, and what hull types are superior. However, he ignores aluminum hulls and dismisses jet boats as a fad. The book is good, to a point.

Great tips

Quick read that gets right to the point. I haven't completed my boat purchase yet and have been researching for a year. I want to get the best boat for the money. The author's tips regarding communication with the seller or broker really work. I have gotten all kinds of information from brokers regarding boats that they have sold including selling prices and what I should expect to pay for similar boats. I feel much more confident and less concerned about rushing into things than I did before I read the book.
