Change or Perish

The message of Chuck Martin's book is simple; be prepared to adjust to life on the net or be left behind. In Net Future: The 7 Cybertrends that will Drive your Business, Martin discusses the evolution of the "commercial" net. He warns against companies who merely appear to be evolving by transferring their businesses onto an online format. This is dangerous as he suggests that companies who will thrive in the Net Future will change the way they do business as a result of the internet. Business will become much more customer-centered and people will be more informed and demanding as a result.
The seven cybertrends that he cites suggest not only a change in the way business is done, but a more fundamental change in the way people behave and interact with one another. In the net future, one will see few successful businesses without an online component. The line between the home and office will be fuzzy in the workforce of the future. Business will operate in a global market where prices are competitive and products are driven by consumers. Classrooms and training centers will be without walls, where students and employees can learn "on-demand" according to their schedules and lifestyles. Perhaps the most intriguing chapter of Martin's book is his last in which he discusses the future of education. He certainly has the right idea of where education is going, but the details are somewhat misleading. For example, he quotes the CEO of Real Education (now known as ECollege) Rob Hemlick as saying his company supplies "professors with pre-developed course content and textbooks developed for the online environment". To say that this is the future of online education is not wholly accurate. It is certainly tempting to say that by putting a course online that you have "changed" education, but with accreditation bodies strictly monitoring the development of online programs in higher education, it is likely that we are going to see a shift away from transferring the "bricks and mortar" idea of schooling into the cyber world. Rather, education itself will undergo a fundamental change. This perspective is lacking from his book.
Martin's book is certainly thought provoking and does present an aerial view of the way that technology is changing the way people do business. However, it does not offer in-depth look at any one of these trends. It is food for thought, but the he only begins the conversation on the future of the internet and its impact on technology.

Some of us saw it, but others didn't.... "Net Future" has a much more serious message - it tells us that our customers are demanding that we change the way that we interface with them. Unless companies learn to 'think outside the box'to satisfy new customer needs, they may be doomed to playing 'catch up' with newer more inovative internet-based companies. Chuck's book provides us with intensive lessons on 'thinking outside the box' - it's a must reading for all boardroom seeking anwsers to tomorrows strategies today. Learn how the cybereconomy goes Main Street, how the wired workforce is taking over, understand how the open-book corporation is taking over, how products are becoming commodities, how the customer becomes data, experience communities, and understand how learning moves to real-time, all the time. Net Future: Net Results

According to Chuck Martin, there are (at least) seven "cybertrends" that will drive any business, create wealth, and define their future. He analyzes each in Net Future. These trends are already underway and in various stages of development. What makes Net Future so valuable is that it enables its reader to place his or her organization in correct juxtaposition and then proper alignment with each of these trends; moreover, Martin (functioning as both travel guide and consultant) explains to his reader how to make whatever adjustments may be necessary inorder for her or his organization to succeed. Of course, all of the seven cybertrends are driven by technology. "Together they comprise the Net future." Fair enough. The challenge, as Martin clearly understands, is to manage these cybertrends...or be dominated by them. Many may quarrel with the number specified (Covey probably wouldn't) and others may challenge Martin's explanation of those he selects. Whatever. The point is, this is an immensely informative book in which Martin the futurist shares his visions and then Martin the consultant helps his reader to understand the trends which will probably define that future. Each reader may feel that Net Future was written specifically for her or him. At least that was my reaction. I strongly recommend this book to anyone in need of an intellectual framework within which to organize troublesome ambiguities as well as quantifiable realities.

Just right for Green Belt training

The Six Sigma Way Team Fieldbook is an excellent companion to the original Six Sigma Way. I'm using it as a primary textbook in the Green Belt course at the college where I teach. The Fieldbook does a good job of laying out the "nuts and bolts" process of attacking a problem and making improvements. The book is a little light in some of the more techinical areas, specifically in the Analysis Stage of the DMAIC model. That's where I come in as the course instuctor. I supplement the Fieldbook with the QCI CSSBB Primer and use MiniTab software for statistical analysis. It all blends together, and is held together, by the very well written descriptions of DMAIC methodologies in the Team Fieldbook. This book is exactly what it is intended to be -- A Team Fieldbook for Six Sigma practitioners. Used with the guidance from an experienced Six Sigma practitioner (Black Belt), it is an excellent tool for both training and basic reference.

Classroom training for Six Sigma costs what!

I began my journey to learn about Six Sigma around a year ago. At that time I investigated classroom training on Six Sigma. The cost for Six Sigma training was far too expensive for my management team to seriously consider. My most viable option was to train myself. I bought seven, yes seven, books on the topic of Six Sigma. This book was the best of the seven resources I purchased. This book is an inexpensive resource for training. I would also recommend an introduction to Six Sigma to supplement this book. My recommendation would be, "What is Six Sigma?" (another book by Pande). I have several years of quality experience so not every newcomer can just read a book. For most business process improvement efforts this book can give you the education to be dangerous against company waste and inefficiencies.

Six Sigma and Project Management Tips

This Six Sigma book is for those who have little direct experience as a project manager. In addition to an introduction to Six Sigma (albeit not as efficient introduction as "What Is Six Sigma?"), the authors go into depth on team dynamics and other project management information.
While the project management information is good and an excellent refresher for those who are only peripherally involved with project management, it helps to feed the Achilles heal of Six Sigma: the perception that it's the same old stuff repackaged and given inflated value.
A quick read of the reviews on Amazon will give you a feel for why people are skeptical of 6 Sigma: the feel-good tone of most writing on 6 Sigma and the insistence that it "is not a flavor-of-the-month management trend" make many of us suspect that 6 Sigma is not much more than hollow jargon and acronyms.
Lets accept that these criticisms are valid and further that many "practitioners" are just self-aggrandizing or worse. But that still leaves us with the essential difficulties of positive change in any organization: you need to overcome assumptions that your organization's subculture may not even realize it has. What a corporation does by accepting Six Sigma is that it empowers people to gather data to challenge what "everybody knows". Most importantly, it sets a very high quality standard, which further sanctions data-driven change.
I was not surprised to see that this book was used successfully in a college-level course on Six Sigma. That audience is less cynical that many in the corporate world and certainly could use exposure to project management.
I feel that the greatest flaw in Six Sigma is that many practitioners and even the books permit the basics to be lost in the shuffle. If one listens to people talk about Six Sigma, its easy to forget that a critical part of Six Sigma is that the data comes first, not the solution. I often hear co-workers say "we need to finish this project to improve our six sigmas" or "if we could get rid of this server we'll all get our green belts".
The term Six Sigma is derived from statistics. This book covers all the necessary statistics and other "tools".
If you just want an introduction to Six Sigma, I would recommend "What Is Six Sigma?" (by some of the same authors). If you'd also like to read about project management, this book will serve you well. But be warned, you'll see feel-good digressions such as an explanation of why Sherlock Holmes would have made a great Six Sigma Black Belt. Some will find these digressions annoying.
I would also recommend Michael Lewis' Moneyball as a companion book. Lewis (author of "Liar's Poker") uses Wall Street trading as an analogy to explain why the Oakland As baseball team is one of the successful teams with much less money than most. But I also see an analogy relevant to the topic of Six Sigma. "Moneyball" also shows how one can achieve superior results by testing what everyone thinks they know with fact gathering and rigorous analyses. "Moneyball" may prove to be an inspiring book for those about to measure processes and look for opportunities for dramatic improvement: precisely what Six Sigma practitioners SHOULD be doing.

this book actually may have hurt me

Caveat: I passed step 2 in 2003.

I needed a question book that provided me with questions broken down by subject. Most question books don't break questions down by subject---e.g. you'll have a practice exam with mixed surgery, OB/Gyn, Psychiatry, IM, Pediatrics questions.

The way I study, I want to do questions after I've completed a specific subject. Example, I just studied cardiology, now I want to do cardiology questions. You can't do that with most question books without having to spend wasted, tedious hours fishing for this through hundreds of questions.

So I at first thought this book would help. IM after all is the bread & butter of USMLE Step 2 & 3. I already exhausted all the questions I could've used in Kaplan's Q-book which also has questions divided by residency-surgery, IM etc, but not by subject.

Unfortunately, the questions in this book aren't high yield. I would go through 20 questions at a time and sometimes get over 15 wrong, making me think I was going to fail the exam-which I didn't. The problem is that some of the questions are so esoteric and won't possibly be on the exam that even veteran attendings won't be able to answer them.

If anything, this book only scared me, and made me think I was going to fail the exam. Whenever I did the Kaplan Q-book questions, I would ace the questions, but this book just screwed with my head.

If you want a hard IM question book to challege you, I'd suggest the Harrison's book of Internal Medicine question book. While those questions are harder, they are also fair and won't screw with you before going into the exam. The Appleton & Lange book does have its merits, but it won't give you a good picture of where you are and where you need to be with the USMLE. If anything its just a good old fashioned "we'll give you questions so hard no one will be able to answer them that won't possibly be on the exam".

If anything this book will be good for a last minute psychological screw up on someone you don't like who is taking the exam in the near future. Give them this book, tell them its very accurate to the questions on the exam (which it isn't) and when they start messing up, they'll think they'll fail the USMLE Step 2 or 3.

It is good in the sense that reviews every major system in medicine.But at the same time contains information not very relavant or important for the exam.Good if you have time but does not contain high yield material if you need a concise review.

The Best Scalp Day Trading Book

I was a little suspicious when I ordered this book. I thought the other reviews were written by friends of the author given only 5 reviews at the time I ordered the book, and they were all five stars. What hell, it is only a round trip commission . . .
Wow, I was wrong.
In my opinion, this is the best book on scalp trading I have ever read. Those who are not scalping for 1/4's and 1/2's may not find it to be the best thing since sliced bread, yet the principles here can be easily applied to all aspects of trading. Most importantly, the book is filled with professionalism, you know it was written by a professional trader as soon as you open it. Hell, it almost feels like it was written by my mentor's day trading alter ego! It kicks off with a line straight out of art of war, it emphasizes on the fact that trading is a zero sum game, survival of the fittest, it also made very clear statements that 90% of the traders lose money, back cover AND very first pages of the book!
It tells you everything from the equipment/broker you need (straight out of Golfbiz's living room) to the recommendation of a trading journal! The book has a truly enlightening chapter on Market Makers, covering who they are, what they do, and their bag of nasty tricks. (After ( ) and this book, I feel most people on this board has no clue what a market maker CAN and CAN NOT do, I highly recommend this book because it provides some amazing insights not found in any other book I read. It only covers 3 minute moving averages (curiously 5/15 SMA, reminds me of VicLee) and 1 minute stochastics, and most importantly, how those two indicators can be combined with Level II screens. You learn everything from watching index futures and how they really work to institution buying programs and how they affect a day trader.
I was afraid that this book may be a loud advertisement for ( ), yet I was pleased that throughout the entire book, the site was NEVER mentioned as blatant advertisement. In fact, 90% of the book has NOTHING to do with the site at all. In the end, there is a two day minute-by-minute journal of a profitable day trader, covering everything from pre-market to closing bell, his winning and losing trades, and only in this chapter you will see the mentioning of the site, even then, you can see that the day trader only uses the site to bring up interesting stocks to watch on his radar, and he uses his OWN instincts to decide entry and exit points.
Finally, this book is UP TO DATE, you will recognize every single stock mentioned in this book, one of the examples mentioned the addition of YHOO to S&P 500, and how it gapped up in afterhours, faced severe selling pressure in the morning, and how MSCO (Morgan Stanley) the market maker simply single handedly took on the world and HELD the BID at 300, eventually the stock closed at 350 . . .
Complaints:
The book is VERY hardcore, the author left out all the fluffs and gave you nothing but hardcore material. That said, it is very readable and very concise, the perfect type of learning curve/speed for me, may be a bit fast for others.
Also, it is rather narrow in scope. This is not reading 700 charts a night, this is focus on a small basket of stocks. The author recommends identifying the AX (leading market maker) and watch them closely for hours or even days before jumping into the stock (for new day traders, veterans can speed things up). Bottomline, this is not my mentor's "commander of an army" trading style, this is more like "camp out in the bushes with a sniper rifle" approach.
Finally, I find the book to be a bit short, 200 pages, too easy to read for me, finished it on a rainy Saturday dreaming about the princess, yet, it is quality over quantity here, very little repetition, very little fluff, just pure day trading goodness.
A MUST READ FOR EVERY DAY TRADER! I MEAN IT!

Outstanding. Read it again and again.

A novice should probably read that fluffy Toni Turner book to get an idea of the lingo, but no one should contemplate day trading without reading Lu. This book is a detailed description of the intricacies of no-nonsense, hardcore daytrading, written by a consistently successful practitioner.
I have read dozens of books on trading and this is the only one that I read again within one week of finishing it for the first time. It's simply too good to store on a shelf. Read it, learn from it, read it again, profit from it.
To use an old cliche, the small amount of money spent on this book will be the best investment you'll ever make. I'm not kidding. Read Toni Turner's sappy book if you must, if you're new to the game, but don't open an account until you read Jea Lu. His explanation of Level II screens, the use of stochastics and moving averages, and his advocacy of zero-emotion trading are all gems, which alone would be worth the price of the book.
I'm currently re-reading it, cover to cover, for the third time.

I suppose this is a good book for would-be day-traders if and only if we knew that the market were about to enter another period like that of 1995-1999. I have the disadvantage of having been at this business since 1983.
The information presented about time-of-day is not universal across all market phases, other than it is true the first and last hour see the most volume and often the most volatility.
The concept that the highest volatility is the best time to trade is based in ignorance. The greatest volatility we have seen in the history of the US equity markets was 1987. Unless you were short (or flat) by the end of the day on Oct 16th, you were broke, dead broke, and you should have been short a couple of days before that. That just wasn't going to happen using these techniques.
The author's view of technical analysis is very narrow. What is pathetic is that he seems to believe he has great technical depth. It is also very dangerous for the reader.
Yes, I see all the other rave reviews. It will be interesting to see how well all like the techniques after a secular bear market, which will happen again. I'll be surprised if any of the raves are still trading, and, if the author continues to trade as described (which I suspect he is not even at this writing), I expect he will be broke. These methods are not new, and have not withstood the test of time.

About the Author

Arthur Hughes is Executive Vice President of ACS, Inc., a database marketing company in Reston, Virginia. He has been designing and maintaining marketing databases for Fortune 500 companies and others for more than a dozen years. He has taught economics at the University of Maryland for 32 years, and lectures in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Asia on marketing. He is a frequent contributor to various publications including Direct, DM News, Target Marketing, Marketing Tools, Direct Marketing and The International Journal of Database Marketing. The absolute best in database marketing

One of the leading authorities in database marketing, and author of The Complete Database Marketer, has released the second edition of Strategic Database Marketing. There is a certain overlap between the two books, but whereas The Complete Database Marketer focusses on both the operational and strategic side of database marketing, this one goes much more in depth into developing database marketing strategies and the many tools you can use to develop your strategy (e.g. RFM, Lifetime Value, Profitability Segmenting, etc). This second edition also features some new material about the opportunities of the Internet, without becoming an e-commerce guide. Arthur has a very down-to-earth way of writing, which makes this both an educational and highly enjoyable work to read. He also illustrates his teachings with many real-life examples, complete with LTV analyses. Finally, there's an extensive glossary and guide on how to keep up with developments in the database marketing field in the back of the book. My only bit of criticism would be the quizes at the end of each chapter, which at times seem to ask about rather trivial facts, while some of the answers in the back of the book seem to be incorrect.
Anyway, if there ever was a bible for database marketing, this is it ! An absolute must-have for database marketers and a fascinating read for marketers in general. Highly recommended !

Exceptional Coverage of Important Marketing Concepts

Hughes makes it exceedingly clear why customer loyalty and lifetime value are such critical marketing concepts. Hughes helps marketers understand why our hyper-focus on customer acquisition needs to be adjusted to consider retention and upsell as well.
In particular, Hughes explains:

Many companies have adapted Jack Welch's now-famous strategies for running a business. Good Idea - Bad Book

I completely agree with the reader who said that this book could have been written much more effectively. It is nearly 400 pages and should have been no more than 25 to 50. Most issues or thoughts in this book while being solid are explained in far far too painful of detail with a great deal of redundancy. This made reading the book extremely wasteful of my time.
Perhaps the authors should have a "Work Out" on improvement of their materials.

Sound advice for delivering speed, simplicity, and solutions

'Work-Out' is the famous organizational process that General Electric, the greatest industrial firm in the world, used to bust bureaucracy - fast.

At its core, Work-Out is a simple, straightforward concept for cutting out bureaucracy and solving organizational problems - fast. Large groups of employees and managers - from different levels and functions of the organization - come together to address issues that they identify or that senior management has raised as concerns. In small teams, people challenge prevailing assumptions about "the way we've always done things" and come up with recommendations for dramatic improvements in organizational processes. The Work-Out teams present their recommendations to a senior manager in a "town meeting", where the manager engages the entire group in a dialogue about the recommendations and then makes yes-or-no decisions on the spot. Recommendations for changing the organization are assigned to "owners" who have volunteered to carry them out and follow through to get results. That's Work-Out in a nutshell.

Work-Out can be applied to almost any type of problem. It was first used at GE to harvest the low-hanging fruit of OVERGROWN BUREAUCRACY by getting unnecessary and unproductive work out of the organizational system - e.g. reduce meetings, reports, and approval levels. They asked what procedures didn't make sense? Where were they wasting time? What activities seemed to add little value? Some of the bureaucratic procedures were expense reimbursements, making travel arrangements, obtaining office supplies, updating personnel data, taking education courses, upgrading software, and more. But also in the core functions, bureaucracy was found: filling out forms for deals, preparing presentations for approval meetings, keeping track of customer data, obtaining approval for materials purchasing, overwhelming amounts of extra analysis to justify various investments or initiatives. Some of the results were e.g. that expense accounts did not need multiple approvals, people could purchase approved software without going through the IT department, and a pre-deal process was established to see if deals were worth pursuing before going through all the analytics.

Work-Out has been successfully adapted to any type of organization - public or private, commercial or non-profit, large or small. In all of these organizations, no matter what the issue, the process remains much the same.

1. Bring together the people from the organization who know the issues best
2. Challenge them to develop creative solutions
3. Decide on the solutions immediately in a public forum
4. Empower people to carry them out

Despite its massive impact on GE and other firms, Work-Out is not a snake oil or magic elixir. It is a simple set of concepts, tools, and experiences. When stripped to its essence, Work-Out allows people to get some obstacles out of the way so they can do their work better. In many firms, that alone would be a significant gain.

The real merit of this book is the practical approach. If you are - as I am - struggling with the challenges of continually keeping our organizations lean, then this book can help you. It contains many inspiring worksheets, action plans, tools, and hands-on case studies.

The authors of this book helped GE create Work-Out. So don't expect theoretical contributions. Only sound advice.

Co-author Dave Ulrich is one of my favourite HR experts. I can recommend many of his books, e.g. `Results-Based Leadership' and `Delivering Results'. To him, HR is about delivering business performance and organizational capabilities. Cause if you don't, you'll soon be out of business. The tricky part is balancing the soft and hard part of HR. Dave Ulrich has many good concepts to make that happen. This book is not a bad place to start, if you'd like to pick his brains...

Great. Lots of first-hand tips to turnaround a large company

Unlike other books on Six Sigma that focus on variation reduction, statistics and other tools, this book is full of practical examples of techniques and implementation tips. The focal point of the book is on the process of generating the turnaround in a large conglomerate such as GE. In this case the aspects of organizational behavior constitute THE critical success factor (rather than statistical/other tools). Workout has undoubtedly been fundamental for generating the cultural transformation in GE. This book is addressing these organizational behavior aspects in a pragmatic manner presenting a detailed road-map from planning all the way through implementation.
Most examples deal with administration/bureaucracy and I would have expected to read more on operational aspects such as value chain improvement in a Production/Logistics environment.
This book is a must for top managers that search for a generic methodology to translate their vision into reality.

Thorough, not complete.

After only 29 pages I found myself constantly asking "what is that, and when did the author define it?". Additionally, there are enough oddly worded sentences that I am unable to follow what is being said. Perhaps I am not the intended audience for the book, but since Sulkin did not include a forward, I can't tell. I am trying to use this as an initial guide to PBX, and find it lacking enought that I am now looking for another book.

Good overview of the world of voice communications

This book is a bit outdated since it is from the last decade but it met most of my objectives since I wanted to learn more about the fundamentals of voice communications including: PSTN, ISDN, PBXs, etc.

This is not a introductory book for novices.

I felt that this book was not proofread enough, i.e. the editors were not thorough enough as I did find quite a few errors: duplicate sentences, typos, o instead of 0, etc.
