A good book for junior power engineer and good reference book for engineering students

As a junior power engineer, I find this book is very useful. As a part time instructor teaching Electric Power System, I find this book is very easy for my students to understand and apply. Although this is the first edition, and it's even older than I do, the fundamental of the knowledge never ages.

I gave five stars, not only because the material is good, but also the seller is excellent. I like the way they pack the book, it shows the respect and care about the knowledge. That's the attitude that I appreciate most.

Practical Solutions

This book provided the best examples from practical design point of view. Although some improvements can be made by adding more detailed stuff for GROUNDING, LIGHTING & SHORT CIRCUIT CHAPTERS. It provided me some basic concepts for selecting transformer's protection devices and other valuable information for about motors too.

Everything you never wanted to know about power calculations

Calculations for network analysis, instrumentation, dc machines, transformers, 3 phase induction motors, single phase induction motors, synchronous machines, transmission lines, electric-power networks, load-flow studies, power-system control, short-circuit computations, system grounding, power-system protection, power-system stability, cogeneration, batteries, economic methods, and lighting design are covered in separate chapters. The information is available, it's just not easy to find. Small type makes reading difficult for anything other than short periods.
I haven't found any errors in formulae or explanations. The organization is logical and, except for the spacing, easy to follow.
Each section has it's own table of contents. The Index is large and appears to encompass most of the important topics in the book.
I'm using it to prepare for and take my Professional Engineering Exam and it looks like it will be an excellent reference.... this is the book I'd buy to have a handbook close at hand for quick, look ups.

About the Author

Larry Stephens, Ph.D., is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, with a special interest in Mathematics Education. just my opinion.....

.... and I have little to compare this book to. Relatively good, tho not perfect. On page 147, they show how to derive the lowest common denominator, go thru the steps, but appear to skip one detail-which isnt at all obvious.
I was able to consult a library book I had & get a decent explanation. Yes, this text had the correct answer, but didnt show u one of the steps.
Then they go on to show how to do the same lowest common denominator for adding a bunch of equations. At the end, they say u cant use certain values, but the finished equation gives u no hint as to why not.
This book often refers to "MAPLE", a software program that rearranges equations for u. Its ok if u dont have the software, the learning duznt hinge on it. And its nice to know that there is such software.
Overall, being very nearly done w/ the book, I think its pretty good. I took 10 math books out of the library. Why? Trying to learn game programming, and I knew my math was weak. Wasnt sure what the difference between algebra & geometry was any more, they were a hopeless mix of memories in my mind. Eventually, I'll need to break down & buy something, for now, I'm deciding based on study of free library books.
I think u'd be Ok w/ this book. I only wrote a review cuz no one else has written anything. I say, got to the library & then later, decide which book to buy for yer own.

Dennis Roddy, Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, has taught courses that include Satellite Communications, Communications Systems, Optical Communications, and Analysis and Design of Analog Circuits. He has more than 40 years of experience in both industrial and technical education. His previous books include Radio and Line Transmission, vols.1 and 2, Introduction to Microelectronics, Microwave Technology, and the first two editions of Satellite Communications. In addition, he has coauthored several textbooks and published technical papers and reports on a wide variety of topics.

Excellent introduction

This is an excellent introduction to the field that's pitched at the undergraduate engineering level. It's clearly and concisely written and the writing overall is much better than what I'm used to finding for most engineering texts. It uses almost no calculus, actually, but there's a fair amount of trigonometry, which shouldn't be a problem for most people who will be reading this book. Its strength is in the breadth of coverage; some of the topics, such as entire antenna design, or digital signal theory, are huge areas just by themselves that you will need other books for if you need more depth there. By the way, the Schaum's Outline on Digital Signal Processing is outstanding if you're looking to get a leg up there. It's more concise, better written, and explains concepts better than the vast majority of the texts out there.

It's also important to know the basics about radio and wireless communication before reading this book, otherwise it will just be too difficult. So you should already know something about subjects such as analog and digital signals, amplitude and frequency modulation, basic filter concepts such as low and high pass filters, amplifiers, coders and decoders, frequency detectors, antenna principles, and so on, before reading this book. There's also a fair amount of microwave information in the book, but this is easier to pick up if you already have some idea about wireless radio communication.

I agree with the other writer that one weakness of the book is it lacks coverage of the more recent developments such as current IP topologie, satellite Internet IP services like Hughes and BGAN, or discussion of current DVB-S or S2 technology, digital satellite services that are used all over the world now since 1995. However, I don't fault the book too much for that as things change so quickly now i this field that books on communications are partly outdated by the time they're published. But overall it's a very good introductory text and one that I learned a lot from. By the way, in recent weeks I've discovered that Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, has hundreds of articles on satellite and other communications topics, including some of the ones that aren't discussed here such as DVB-S and DVB-S2, and you can use that site to bone up on them a bit.

Roddey; very good intermediate level book.

This book is very suitable for either an undergraduate EE student, or an interested laymen with modest communications knowledge (i.e. HAM radio, etc..). Roddey's writing style is fairly clear and crisp, and other reviewers are on the mark.
The technical content is fairly thorough for introductory
to intermediate purposes. However, this is definately not a "reference" or "bible" type book; nothing too exotic is contained therein.
The book has some nicely written chapters on general communications theory (i.e. channel capacity, etc..),
however, the content and treatment is skimpy.
If your interested in satellite communications but
don't know much about die-hard communications theory,
you'd be better of getting a companion book specifically
for that purpose [i.e. Sklar or Proakisl; both authors
have books called "Digital Communications"].
All in all, the book delivers what it promises and is
worth the price... Probably one of the top 4 books to
get on Satellite Communications... Also look into
[Timothy Pratt book; Gerard Maral book; and also Tri T Ha for those looking for a much more advanced book].

nice breadth that covers this field

For the undergraduate or graduate student in engineering, this is a very understandable text on the basic principles of using satellites to communicate. Many topics in the field are covered. Like a comprehensive listing of existing geostationary satellites, and their orbital assignments.

For those of you who need a revision of Keplerian mechanics, Roddy supplies Chapter 2. Or if you need a quick cram on the propagation of radio waves, there is Chapter 4. And there is the all-important subject of antenna design. Whether this be for an antenna on the satellite or here on Earth.

Given that communications are of interest, various analog and digital encoding schemes are bruited. By now very well understood. Which leads into a discussion of signal and noise interference on a channel.

For all of the topics, like antenna design, or communications theory, there are certainly more indepth books. But the breadth here is a key utility of this book.

Concise, Well Written, and Worthwhile

I'm quite pleased with the material presented in this book and the clarity with which it is presented. I don't know how much credit to give to Mr. Pring versus the charting method he illuminates, but Pring makes candlestick charting entirely accessible to any reader possessing the intellectual tools requisite for competent analysis and trading. To be certain, I'm much impressed with some of the advantages candlestick charting provides the trader over conventional western charting and so a good part of my favorable impression of this book may lie in my approval of the techniques that Pring describes.
My own trading style relies somewhat on technical analysis but is also heavily influenced by fundamentals and market psychology. What I found most attractive in Pring's candlesticks was the way in which he focused on what this or that pattern revealed about the attitudes of market participants not just from day to day, but more importantly during the day. As a swing trader, I find this approach absolutely essential in detecting shifts in sentiment on a relatively short term basis, but in a broader context than within the electronic strictures of pure day trading.
Above all else, I give Pring credit for simplifying this analytical technique down to its basic components and including excellent descriptions and charts. While I'm inclined to conclude that most Technical Analysis books are overpriced, I believe that any book that can give the trader reliable new tools is ultimately worth the price. I believe this book fits in that category. I recommend this volume to anyone who desires more than rudimentary knowledge of candlestick charting. I doubt that any discussion of candlestick charting extending beyond Pring's teaching would really add much to the topic. I highly recommend this particular volume.

Exellent resource!

LOVE this product! This really does help me out a lot as I'm studying for my exam! There are a lot of things that I had forgotten and this book has certainly brought me up to speed!

I agree some of the letters choices are off but that can easily be quelled if you read the answers and compare them!

Great for reviewing

I am very pleased with the Appleton & Lange test review guide. It has been more than a year since I graduated and the detailed answer section was very helpful in jogging my memory on some of the topics that I was a bit rusty. Also included in the back of the book is a handy test answer grid that you can copy and test yourself multiple times, rather than marking up your book.

The book contains a wide sampling of all areas and even on some subjects that I would not have thought to prepare for such as the technological section which covers computers, electricity, physics and robotics.

The practice test also has a Subject Listing which was insightful. This allows you to determine what subject areas any incorrect answers occurred in so that you can go back and focus on those particular problem areas for further review.

Not what I expected

When I ordered this book I thought it was going to contain study information somewhat like a text book. However it does not. It is just practice test questions for you to study with. The book is useful for sure but not if you are expecting to read it like a text book. It is just test questions and in my opinion the answers could have been a little more detailed in some cases. If you are looking for practice taking your CST exam it's great for that.

GREAT!

Hi,
I bought this book about 3 weeks before the test. Ive been out of school for 4 years and my main weakness was mathemetic-I did very badly in this area in school. This book breaks EVERYTHING down to you in a way that makes it easy for you to pass the test with high scores. You dont even particularly need to know the actual subject well. The GED tests your ability to think and ability to discern what questions they are asking-thats it! With math, I took the practiced tests(which I got a lot wrong)-but once I went back and checked the answers-I understood what the questions were asking me to do(Oh-so I just needed to do the Pythagorean theorem..).
I will say, that the tests in this book are about 25 percent harder than the real GED exam, so know that if you consistantly take the tests and go over what you got wrong-YOU WILL SCORE HIGH! No doubt about it.
I took the test this month and already got back my scores
680-Mathematics
700 Writing
760 Reading
660 Social Studies
680 Science
These are all scores in the high 90th percentiles for graduating high school seniors.The scores speak for themselves. I highly reccomend this book!

Parent-Friendly too

I bought the McGraw-Hill GED text for my 17 year old child. We decided that it was best for her to get a GED rather than through the traditional method of attending high school for reasons unrelated to this review.

When the book arrived, I was a bit taken aback by this sheer size of it and somewhat concerned that my child would also be alarmed. However, upon reading through the text, I found it very straight forward and easy to follow. We review the chapters together and have set a goal of 2 full chapters per week - there are 30 individual chapters.

In addition, I purchased the text with the optional CD ROM. It contains sample tests which can be taken either at your leisure or using the exam's timer. The sample tests appear somewhat similar in format as well as difficulty to what I took completing my CLEP exams (I'm not sure if that means colleges have been dumbed down or that students are smarter). At the very least, the practice exam format should be good practice for taking this style of exam in the GED (and later in the CLEP exams).

While my child has not taken the GED exam to date, she has studied the text and taken the sample exams on her own which seems to be instilling some new-found confidence in her academic abilities.

For the sheer volume and information, the text is a very good bargain. The chapters are short, well written, and to the point, which make it better for the student who may have difficulties spending large amounts of time covering the material. Finally, I would advise spending the extra few dollars for the CD ROM when deciding which version to purchase.

Great Book!

This book was very helpful to me. I had been out of school for 12 years before I took the GED exams. I studied on my own, and passed with flying colors. My score is 3080, I've heard that some institutions consider that passing with honors. Anyway, what I loved about this book is the pre-tests.... You take the pre-test for each subject, and depending on the questions you got wrong the book tells you what pages to study. This was a great idea from the makers of this book. At the end of the book are all the post-tests, after you've studied what you got wrong on the pre-test (it goes through step by step to teach you the things you don't know), you proceed to the post tests. This is a GREAT book!!!! I would recommend it for anyone taking the GED exams.

Generally Good, Though Occasionally Off Track

"Commercial Aviation Safety" is a great introductory text for students wanting exposure to most safety considerations in aviation. The book is a well-organized survey, although I only award it four stars because the authors frequently get off-topic into areas only tangentially related to aviation safety.

The book opens with a discussion of the aviation regulatory and historical framework. This goes rapidly astray, with discussions of everything from the 1978 lead standard to the 1989 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER), which deals with toxic spill cleanup. Both of these could be tied to aviation safety, but the numerous citations of this nature serve to dilute the import of more important and common aviation safety programs.

Chapter two is a good overview of rulemaking processes, and I agree with the authors that the current FAA rulemaking process is far to labyrinthine at 217 steps long. Unfortunately, chapter two gets into a protracted discussion of OSHA related topics including quagmires like the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement and Fairness Act (SBREFA) which are not especially germane to aviation. Chapter three is a good introduction to the NTSB.

Chapter four is on "Recording and Reporting Safety Data" and is one of the key chapters in the book. The authors make excellent points about accidents and incidents as precursors to accidents (page 75). I was amazed to find that the FAA has 280 separate data collection systems. Clearly a database management system would be of great help to the government. On page 84 the authors have written a great explanation of Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) and the Air Transport Oversight System (ATOS). Anyone interested in this field needs a good working knowledge of these two components. The authors once again (page 92) make the excellent point that nonaccident safety data is vital in identifying and estimating the magnitude of safety problems. Chapter four, unfortunately, closes off course with a discussion of chemical spill reporting requirements. This is only applicable to extremely specialized professionals and is not readily of interest to readers of a survey on aviation safety. (This, for instance, is the closing line of the chapter: "RCRA listed hazardous wastes (F, K, P, U) under 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart D, and characteristic wastes (I, C, R, TC) under 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart C, are reportable if the release equals or exceeds the designated RQ.")

Chapter five is an overview of safety statistics, and pages 102-103 contain an excellent discussion of the utility and interpretation of accident rates and their use as indicators of risk trends. Beginning in chapter five, though, the pro-Boeing bias of the authors becomes readily apparent. Many safety advances are attributed to Boeing when they were actually introduced first or done better by another manufacturer. Chapter five also contains a summary of accident statistics that is useful, although monotonously written.

Chapter six deals with accident causation modeling, and introduces several models including the 5-M model (page 145.) It also contains good discussions of risk management (page 151) and human performance factors (page 160.)

Chapter seven starts with (page 163) an excellent discussion of the management of error, which is becoming more important in aviation today. It goes astray on page 164, though, with an inaccurate Boeing versus Airbus example in which Boeing is seen as the champion for simplicity and Airbus for complexity. The authors then get into an example of fuel system design. Anyone who has flown the B-747-400 and the newer Airbus products (A-320 and subsequent) can refute the assertion that Boeing is simpler. The 747-400 has the most nightmarish fuel system I have ever been exposed to, whereas the Airbus fuel system is very simple to operate. Even the "simpler" Boeings like the 757 and 767 have more fuel-related operational limitations and user knowledge requirements than a newer Airbus. My point here isn't to denigrate Boeing, but to point out that some of the examples in the book are perhaps skewed by personal knowledge or bias. Page 170 has an interesting comparison of 757/767 versus A-320 envelope protection. It is generally well balanced and technically correct, but their conclusion about windshear escape maneuvers is not justified: many simulator studies have now been carried out comparing the Boeing and Airbus escape profiles, and in all that I am aware of the Airbus full aft stick recovery provided greater ground clearance in identical conditions. I am unsurprised that the B-777 is cited for the electronic checklist (ECL) as a safety improvement, although all Airbus aircraft since the A-310 have had excellent ECAM automatic normal and abnormal checklists.

The remainder of the book is an overview of Air Traffic Control (although the authors contend that Free Flight is alive, most think it's DOA), and airline specific information, which is generally good. The book credits the 737 with starting the two-pilot cockpit, while actually the DC-9 flew much earlier. The Flight Control Computer (FCC) discussion of page 248 discusses the advances in modern FCCs, though fails to mention that the architecture being described is exclusive to Airbus. Once again the chapter deteriorates at the end with a discussion of 29 CFR 1910.215, Abrasive Wheel Machinery (pedestal grinders and other grinding wheels), and a discussion of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z.

Security is well covered in Chapter 11, although perhaps the discussion of nuclear quadrupole resonance technology, and the Body Orifice Security Scanner (BOSS) are more rooted in minutia than is needed in a text of this nature.

Chapter 12 concerns airline safety programs, and discusses employee selection. Particularly excellent is the discussion of requirements for a Safety Director (page 352). The discussion of Internal Evaluation Programs (page 346) is also superior.

This book is a great resource. The material within it would rate five stars if it weren't for the fairly constant introduction of material only tangentially relevant to aviation safety. I recommend this book for any aviation student or professional.

Informative Book

"Commercial Aviation Security" is a comprehensive book on various safety and security aspects of commercial aviation. The wide range of topics covered include aviation law and regulations, the FAA Rule Making process, recording and reporting safety data, safety statistics, model of accident causation, risk assessment and management, air traffic management and control issues, aviation security, among other things.

The book is well written, well presented and easy to follow and understand. Those people involved with commercial aviation safety, operations and security will find this a valuable, helpful and handy reference book.

Full of Info, but Not Flashy

This is required reading by many Embry-Riddle Aviation Safety teachers.

It is broad in scope and recent, regarding coverage of the latest technology and events. It is not just a reprint of an out-of-date textbook with a new cover and a little new stuff thrown in, although I have not read the previous edition. I was surpised to see references to recent events and new technology that is barely being used. With the industry moving as fast as it is, I believe this is the book's strength. (Copyright is 2004) 5 of 5 stars for information.

Sure it may be dry, but it's a textbook. I haven't read too many textbooks that were written in a lively manner. Personally, I want information, not a entertainment or an agenda.

I particularly like that there is very little 'word fluff'. The writing is concise and straight-to-the-point, without excessive writing or stories to try to make a point. It encompasses a very wide range of Aviation Safety topics that one would need to know for general knowledge of the subject.

For a typical expensive textbook, I was surprised that there are NO pictures, and the book is printed on cheap 'copier paper' rather than fancy glossy paper. Otherwise, the binding and cover is rugged and secure. The absence of color or pictures, or fancy paper doesn't detract from the information which is top-notch. 3 of 5 stars for appearance and quality.

If you want fancy, get something else. If you want concise, up-to-date information, get this!
