Mr. Bates has more than 35 years of experience in telecommunications and information systems. He oversees the overall operation of TC International Consulting, Inc. (TCIC) of Phoenix, Arizona. TCIC is a full-service management consulting organization that specializes in designing and integrating information technologies. TC International Consulting leads the pack in strategic development and implementation of new technologies for carriers and corporations alike.

Bud's experience has served in major network designs from local area networks (LANs) to wide area networks (WANs) using high-quality, all-digital transmission services: T1, T3, and SONET/SDH. His studies and recommendations have resulted in significant financial savings. One project included the design and implementation of a Frame Relay network that spanned over 14 countries and 80 locations. This project resulted in huge monthly savings while preserving sub-second response times across the network.

His articles have been published in NETWORK WORLD, INFORMATION WEEK, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INFORMATION MANAGEMENT, and others. He has authored numerous books published by McGraw-Hill and Artech House. His recent published books--VOICE AND DATA COMMUNICATIONS, Third Edition and the BROADBAND TELECOMMUNICATIONS HANDBOOK--are on McGraw-Hill's 2000 bestseller list. Recommended for technical and non-technical people.

This book covers broad range of wireless topics in a handbook
format. Naturally there is no deep analysis of any topic and
no mathematics inside. The book is not 500 pages but only 384
pages. Some parts of the book and some figures directly come
from the author's another famous book named "Broadband
Telecommunications Handbook" by the same publisher.
I recommend this book for technical people to refresh their
knowledge and to have updated information on today's wireless
technologies. This book would be suitable also for non-technical
people in telecom field to have a general overview. There are
some errors in the book as usual but can be ignored. Some
descriptions are not cristal clear like the one on CDMA and
could have been better. It is an easy reading good book after
all and wellcomes to any technical library.

The basics

If you do not have any technical experience in wireless and you are looking to get a grasp on the basic technology, applications, and market, I would recommend this book. Sit down read it through quickly then move on. If you have moderate wireless experience and are trying to get caught up on 2.5G and 3G technology and standards, this is NOT the book.
Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.
Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).

Good for a history lesson

I was forced to buy this as a text book for a class. Overall, you are really just getting a history lesson here. It discusses standards that should be in place by the year 2000. Some of the writing feels repetitive, as in the author repeats the same information in the same, or even other chapters. Average book with good info in wireless up to the year 2000 (13 years ago as of the writing of this review). That said, none of the information is incorrect, and a good understanding of legacy technology should help to understand current technology. There are better and newer books that do as well or better with the history lesson while also bringing you to the current standards of LTE and LTE-A.

The best survey of optical engineering

Without doubt, this is the best general survey of optical engineering, in or out of print. The book shows both the author's broad experience as well as his ability to apply theory to practice. The book is far superior in its selection of topics and in clarity and accuracy of presentation to the alternatives, particularly Shannon's book. The book is useful for engineers or scientists from other fields who need to learn some optics, and for experienced practitioners who need a reference and refresher on particular topics. For example, try to calculate the spectral radiance of a blackbody at a particular wavelength and temperature using the formula in your college physics text, then see how Smith treats the same topic; if you got within an order of magnitude of Smith's correct answer from the college text, give yourself a gold star. The second edition's only weakness was its sparse references; I haven't seen the third edition so this may have been improved. However, this still puts Smith's book ahead of Shannon's, which has no references whatever. If you only buy one book on optics, this should be it.

Great Book for People New to Optics

This book is an excellent source for technical people (a.k.a. engineers) who do not know much about optics but want to enter the field. Warren Smith discussed in great detail a plethora of subjects: how lenses & prisms affect light; how lenses can vary from ideal (a.k.a. first order optics) conditions and how to compensate their aberrations; how to use lenses, prisms, and mirrors in an optical system.
I gave this book four stars out of five because I was expecting the CD to have free optical software with which I could play around with. The CD is great if you want to read the book off of your computer or share it with a friend, but it has no exercises to reinforce (a.k.a. to "learn by doing") the material the book covers.

The book is probably the best general text on optical engineering. It is written simle and clear. "Modern Optical Engineering" covers basic topics quite comprehensive. On the other hand, additional books are needed for good understanding of aberrations and a lens design procedure.

Most realistic view of the future of the practice

This book covers the history, evolution, and definition of the future practice of pharmacy. It describes a rational, realistic, and exceptionally well defined view of the future practice of community pharmacy. The definition is backed up by a large scale analysis of data collected using the model demonstrating its effectivness and positive effects on patient clinical outcomes. Topics include reimbusement, documentation and data models associated with the practice. This is an exceptional and cutting edge landmark text that if adopted will change the level of care provided by medicine whereever it is used. HMO's and managed care and pharmacy benefit organizations supporting this model would actually be involved in managing care rather than managing contracts.

About the Author

This is an Outstanding Book

This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in room acoustics. My motivation as an Audiophile for purchasing this book was to answer the basic question: "Should my next audio investment be in room acoustic treatments, and if so what are the considerations involved?" This book methodically breaks down every aspect of the behavior of sound, and how that behavior affects and is percieved by the listener. Reverberation, reflection, dispersion, diffraction, absorption, spectral analyses, modal analyses, room topology, etc., etc... It's all there. An absolute must have for any Audiophile.

To say that the Master Handbook of Acoustics is an 'incredibly comprehensive work' it's like saying that the Beatles were 'some band from Liverpool'. Without a doubt, a must-have. Better than that, buy two and enlighten a friend! :-)
Now really, this is the absolute definitive book on acoustics, covering topics ranging from sound propagation to room acoustics to absortion, diffusion, refraction, reflection, diffraction and everything else you can think of.

Because on that day the human race, in the guise of two quiet, unassuming men from the great American Midwest, slipped the shackles that had bound men to the Earth since time began. In a flight that covered 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds, man had made a controlled, sustained flight. More simply put, man had conquered the air."

Amazingly, the brothers never collaborated to create a full first person narrative of their experiments, of their historic flight, or of the trials they faced in its aftermath. They also failed to leave engineering drawings that fully captured all the details of their aircraft. This carefully bound and boxed set faithfully recreates the historic original first edition of The Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Published in 1953, five years after Orville Wright's death, those volumes are now rare. Reissued to make the Papers once again available and to mark the Centennial of Flight, this set of documents--diary entries, drawings, and personal and aeronautical correspondence--edited by a director of the Aeronautics Division of the Library of Congress, represent the most complete published record left by the Wright brothers on their triumph, and its far-ranging consequences to themselves and to the world.

In 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, two brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, made the first manned, controlled, sustained, successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft--a flight that both electrified the imagination of the world and revolutionized aeronautical theory. Now, fifty years after this history-making event, the private papers of the Wright brothers are published for the first time. Under the sponsorship of Oberlin College, Marvin W. McFarland representing the Library of Congress Aeronautics Division has edited and annotated the great mass of material. Volume One covers the years from 1899 to 1905, the years of the Wrights' experimentation; Volume Two spans the years from 1906 to 1948, the years of public recognition and acclaim. Both volumes include, besides a number of scientific papers highlighting the Wrights' vast contribution to the science of aeronautics, their numerous diaries and letters, which show the brothers as persons of wit, warm affections, and integrity.

In these two volumes is the fascinating correspondence (1900-1919) between Wilbur Wright and Octave Chanute, the early leader in the aeronautics field who freely lent his genius and aid to the brothers; excerpts from 33 Wright diaries and notebooks (1900-1919), and from Wright family correspondence; wind-tunnel tables, propeller notebooks, and many other selected articles, lectures, and writings by the brothers. Also included are five appendices that summarize technical information, 128 pages of halftones, 12 pages of historical photographs, a complete index, and numerous charts and diagrams.

An astounding firsthand account of the invention of flight

Conventional wisdom brands these two geniuses as simple "bicycle mechanics." This incredible book takes you inside their genius, in their own words, written day-by-day. What they accomplished is no less than a miracle, and this book will humble even the most self-assured intellects. Their research "invented" wing theory and shapes, aircraft control systems, and propeller theory. Then they had to design and constuct their own engine, as available ones were too heavy. And wonderfully for us, they left an astounding amount of documentation, including photographic (including the famous photo of the first controlled flight ever), and massive documents and correspondence, which is reproduced in this 800+ page book. Definitive Book on the Wrights

If you like avaition and it's history, this is the book for you. Very easy to read and well put together. The two volumes come in a nice dust case.

undigested wright

In 2003 I did what many others did, I bought a model of the 1903 flyer and built it with my daughter, and I found a great book on the Wrights. The book, Visions of a Flying Machine by Peter Jakob created something of a small obsession within me about the Wrights' creative process. The massive two volume set of thier papers edited by Mcfarland has begun to satisfy this need to understand. It is beautiful. It could have been sewn in signatures however, instead of being bound like a paperback with a hard cover.

Anytime a title can pass through fifteen editions, it must be doing something right, and it must be providing a valuable service. While McGraw-Hill has not made volume data available, the fact that this title has been published in numerous editions since 1956 allows for its place as a compulsory read, if not as an important reference. The subtitle of the book actually describes its place rather well: "An encyclopedia for Managers, Technical Professionals, Purchasing and Production Managers, Technicians and Supervisors." The book is divided into two parts, Materials -- Their Properties and Uses; and Structure and Properties of Materials. Either part can provide valuable insights into the nature of the materials used in the battery industry daily; both together provide interesting reading and a ready reference for those numerous questions which always arise at just the wrong moment.

Materials Handbook (15th Ed.)

The "Materials Handbook" (15th Ed.) is now one of my favorite reference books. The variety of materials that it documents is pretty amazing. This is a great book for the scientist, engineer & layperson alike. A reader can quickly find the basic description & properties for alloys, elements, non-metallic substances, plastics, wood, liquids, etc., etc. If you can name it, it's probably in this book. There's one caveat; even at 1244 pages, it cannot contain every useful fact pertaining to a particular substance. Given that practical limitation, I suspect that many of us could learn exactly what we wanted to know about a substance and others can search other references that focus exclusively on specific materials in whatever category. Again, it's a very valuable reference and it is a great addition to any technical library.

I have not read the most edition, but I have read an older one. I actually read it cover to cover. I find it fascinating to learn the history of various alloys and composites. Pretty much anything you want to know about any material is here. For anyone who has any interest in science, building, woodworking, sculpture, etc. this book will be extremely useful.

The authors, one a prominent asset-allocation adviser and the other a former head of macroeconomic forecasting for the Bank of England, warn that it's only a matter of time before the overexuberant market of the early 21st-century topples like its counterparts in 1929 and 1968. Here they set out to show why and how this will happen--as well as to tell stockholders what they should and should not do if they want to emerge intact.

Much better than Shiller's new book

Smithers and Wright have written a very compelling indictment of today's stock prices. They argue that prices are way too high by historical standards, and exhort us to SELL. This is the same conclusion reached by Yale Professor Robert Shiller in his new book "Irrational Exuberance"; however, Smithers and Wright are much more convincing.
Smithers and Wright use as a measure of valuation for stocks a statistic called "q" (or Tobin's q, named after Nobel laureate and Shiller colleague James Tobin). q represents the value of equities divided by the cost of replacing the underlying capital stock. So you might expect the stock market to be worth somewhere near q=1, where companies are worth what it cost to build them; historically, the average value of q is near 1.
Smithers and Wright show that changes in q and equity prices are almost identical, since the cost of replacing the capital stock changes so little. They also show that high values of q are associated with terrible subsequent returns. They show how a simple strategy of selling when q rises to 1.5 and buying again when q falls below 1 * trounces * a buy-and-hold strategy. And they top it all off by showing that today's level of q, around 2.5, is unprecedented. So SELL!
The reason the book is so much better than Shiller's is that Smithers and Wright give a coherent, fact- and theory-based argument for why q should be used to value stocks, not just P/E, stock earnings yield compared to bond earnings yield, or other popular measures. Shiller just used P/E and told us to sell due to today's high P/E; he did not even consider, not to mention try to debunk, other theories of valuation.
Smithers and Wright point out, for example, that in the early '30s, P/E was very high due to the depressed depression-era profits of companies, but that q was very low, providing the buy signal of a lifetime that would have been missed by looking at P/E alone.
The only negatives of this otherwise excellent book are: (1) Like most finance books, this one would gain from adding computations of after-tax returns, which shift us away from fancy trading strategies and towards buy-and-hold in taxable accounts. (2) They should admit that there are significant differences between today's economy and economies of the past. For example, in an economy such as ours where intellectual property is paramount and provides barriers to entry, firms' values may stay above the cost of replacing capital.

Entertaining, Readable, and Thought Provoking

This is far from the dry boring stuff that is usually written on finance. The authors produce an extremely convincing and logical argument that the stock market is overvalued. This is based on comparing Tobin's q to its long term average. Tobin's q is based on flow of funds data and hence overcomes the problem of looking at corporate data. They also discuss other valuation techniques and explain their strengths and weaknesses. The book is full of interesting insights. I particularly like an example they use to demonstrate the power of compund interest. A gem of a book and well worth reading what ever your view on the state of world equity market.

Buy and hold or buy and sell?

Although there's plenty of evidence one cannot time the market short term--just look at managed portfolios compared to major stock indexes--that does not mean it's not possible over much longer cycles. The usual metric, P/E ratio, for measuring these cycles is occasionally wrong, like once or twice a century, e.g. if earnings are unusually small, as in the Depression. Better to use something similar to price-to-book value, "q". Averaging over all companies, and looking back over the last hundred years of market data, q tells you when stocks are overpriced more reliably than P/E. If you buy stocks at below average q and sell them when q is above average, you'll outperform a buy and hold strategy.

Of course, people already ignoring P/E are unlikely to be swayed by a refinement. That's why the second aspect of this book is important. It's one of few books that tells you *not* to own stocks now. It presents historical data--someone unfortunate enough to have entered the market just before the 1929 crash would have had to wait 25 years to catch up with an all bond portfolio--to show how bad an investment stocks can be.

Holding bonds until P/E returns to single digits, where it was at the start of the bull market in 1982, will never appeal to some people, but that's this book's advice in a nutshell.

I remember John from the Original Financial News Networkl. It was just a couple of traders and a commentator then. What the channel has turned into is a matter for discussion. John always impressed me. He was analytical but not boring. Entertaining, thoughtful and informative. That was true then and it still remains true today. So many traders have gained from John's insights, it would be impossible to count them all. I can sum this book up in one word. Useful.
The writer's wisdom holds up over the years, which is why I bought it. Read it. Read it again. Pass it on. It will be well worth your time.

Using Bollinger Bands

This book is highly recommended for serious traders. However, you must have access to the trigger and volume indicators, not available in all software programs to actually test or use his systems. Additionally, this would not be for the beginning student, but should be a "must" read before risking capital.
