About the Author
Mr. Bates has more than 35 years of experience in telecommunications and information systems. He oversees the overall operation of TC International Consulting, Inc. (TCIC) of Phoenix, Arizona. TCIC is a full-service management consulting organization that specializes in designing and integrating information technologies. TC International Consulting leads the pack in strategic development and implementation of new technologies for carriers and corporations alike.
Bud's experience has served in major network designs from local area networks (LANs) to wide area networks (WANs) using high-quality, all-digital transmission services: T1, T3, and SONET/SDH. His studies and recommendations have resulted in significant financial savings. One project included the design and implementation of a Frame Relay network that spanned over 14 countries and 80 locations. This project resulted in huge monthly savings while preserving sub-second response times across the network.
His articles have been published in NETWORK WORLD, INFORMATION WEEK, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INFORMATION MANAGEMENT, and others. He has authored numerous books published by McGraw-Hill and Artech House. His recent published books--VOICE AND DATA COMMUNICATIONS, Third Edition and the BROADBAND TELECOMMUNICATIONS HANDBOOK--are on McGraw-Hill's 2000 bestseller list. Recommended for technical and non-technical people.

This book covers broad range of wireless topics in a handbook
format. Naturally there is no deep analysis of any topic and
no mathematics inside. The book is not 500 pages but only 384
pages. Some parts of the book and some figures directly come
from the author's another famous book named "Broadband
Telecommunications Handbook" by the same publisher.
I recommend this book for technical people to refresh their
knowledge and to have updated information on today's wireless
technologies. This book would be suitable also for non-technical
people in telecom field to have a general overview. There are
some errors in the book as usual but can be ignored. Some
descriptions are not cristal clear like the one on CDMA and
could have been better. It is an easy reading good book after
all and wellcomes to any technical library.

The basics

If you do not have any technical experience in wireless and you are looking to get a grasp on the basic technology, applications, and market, I would recommend this book. Sit down read it through quickly then move on. If you have moderate wireless experience and are trying to get caught up on 2.5G and 3G technology and standards, this is NOT the book.
Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.
Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).

Good for a history lesson

I was forced to buy this as a text book for a class. Overall, you are really just getting a history lesson here. It discusses standards that should be in place by the year 2000. Some of the writing feels repetitive, as in the author repeats the same information in the same, or even other chapters. Average book with good info in wireless up to the year 2000 (13 years ago as of the writing of this review). That said, none of the information is incorrect, and a good understanding of legacy technology should help to understand current technology. There are better and newer books that do as well or better with the history lesson while also bringing you to the current standards of LTE and LTE-A.
