Everything Orientation

This is a compendium of almost everything that one might need to create or improve existing orientation programs. From best practices in orientation videos, small businesses, intern & buddy programs to case studies from companies like Ford and Alcatel.

The book also includes numerous useful lists, tools and aids that can be reproduced or used as a basic template for planning new orientation as well as evaluating and improving existent programs. In other words, this is a practical book filled with implementable ideas and suggestions guaranteed to make your new hires feel 'special' and at the same time, taking them through all the knowledge and information bits that they need to learn in a fun and engaging manner.

I found the case studies chapters very informative and particularly enjoyed Part 5 of the book: Orientation Games & Activities which includes 18 very useful and effective games like the hunt for company policies which turns a normally boring part of any orientation program into a really fun activity.

Also quite useful was the Part 6: Orientation Checklists & Surveys covering such areas as 'Before the Employee's First Day'; 'I'm New Here - What Should I Learn?'; and 'A 90-day New Employee Survey'.

Where's the beef?

I was dissappointed in this book. As an HR manager wanting to create a "Best Practices" New Hire Orientation program out of our exisiting "good" program, I did not find the book very useful. There was very little new information to improve my current program. Rather than informing you how to create your own program, most chapters highlighted programs from other businesses and your option is to attempt to squeeze a few ideas out of whatever chapter is similar to your business. I did find a few ideas throughout the book that I may incorporate and there is a good chapter on games and activities to energize the session. Otherwise the bulk of the information wasn't of use to me. The book might be helpful to someone who is establishing their first NHO session.

An options workbook that is useful!

I have been trading stocks and options for 3 years and found the volatility, strategy and synthetics section excellent. I have had a hard time understanding synthetics and the idea of creating other positions and understanding the risk and rewards was very useful. I already knew all the strategies but the book went into explaining how to trade them and hedge them. The contract vs. delta neutral was very informative and practical. The simple use of calculating volatility down to the day was very useful and helps me determine option's premiums against fair value. I like the workbook feel instead of textbook feel.
Pros - Simple explanation of volatility, intro to synthetics, strategy section with how to trade the positions, great basic strategy formula section, interesting market making section, seemed more like a workbook, and a the quiz at the end of each section.
Cons - More on Synthetics, some sections a little complicated for the beginner (This book is more intermediate then basic). Would like more on pricing formulas. The position trading section needs more examples instead of just one.
Final thoughts: ... it was worth it, not too complicated, and information that you can use. At least it wasn't another one of those "get rich" day-trading books about scapling 1/8s with nothing but speculation and a lot of BS. I have enough of those books on my self, wish I could sell them. McMillan's book is the only other option book that I have found useful.

Practical Options Trading

I have read several options books and they are mostly theoretical or geared towards option market makers. This was the first book I read that I felt was practical. The beginning of this book is very simplistic and explains everything from what an option is to how they are priced. I found it a little to easy, but if you do not know anything about options then this would be a great place to start. The second section and strategy section are the best I have seen for the practical retail trader. I found it very interesting how market makers make markets and how it may effect the retail trader. This was also the first book that I have read that made volatility simple to understand. The best part was the strategy section. The book is divided into bullish, bearish, flat market, and volatile market strategies. I found this to be a great reference tool. This book should be on the self of every advanced retail trader. I have seen the author, Michael Williams, speak in New York and found him very knowledgeable, but even more importantly an excellent teacher. I would rate this book 4 1/2 stars because I am already familiar with options and the beginning is introductory. This book is for the retail client that wants to take advantage of options and the leverage they provide. I would rank this book for beginners to intermediate. For an advance book I would recommend Natenberg's "Option Volatility and Pricing". These two books together are all you need for stock options.

Good but many, many errors. Were the editors asleep?

The authors appear to know their subject well. I would recommend this as a beginner-to-intermediate introduction to fundamentals except for the numerous errors.
Some errors are like "typos" such as 6 instead of 60, some are more serious and subtle such as specifying a call when a put was meant, and some are fundamental structural problems with the book. For example, the Quiz answers don't match the chapters to which they purportedly provide answers, and in some cases only some questions are answered anyway.
The errors are so numerous, and some of a type that they won't be caught by the average beginner, that it might be dangerous for a beginner to rely on this book as a reference or as an only introduction to options.
I'd really like to have a completely "cleaned up" copy, as I think that could make this the best introduction that I'm aware of.

How to develop. "Forty years ago, for a typical suburban house, the cost of engineering, planning, and surveying, including fees paid to agencies, was about the cost of a refrigerator today. Today it is probably greater than the total cost of all of kitchen and other electronic appliances combined." So write Sidney Dewberry and Dennis Couture in the overview chapter that introduces the mammoth second edition of the Land Development Handbook: Planning, Engineering, and Surveying (2002; McGraw-Hill; 1,124 pp.; $150). A development and consulting firm, the Dewberry Companies, is listed as author, which seems appropriate since most of the 26 editors and contributing authors are employees of the firm.

The first edition of this handbook was published in 1996. For this version, several of the 41 chapters have been updated, and the order of presentation has been changed to reflect the way issues come up in a project. There are six sections: feasibility and site analysis, conceptual design, schematic design, final design, plan submission and permitting, and construction. This is a how-to book that aspires to be both extensive and detailed; its table of contents alone runs 13 pages.

As the title and cover photo suggest, the authors focus on development of greenfields. The engineering perspective is dominant, and the book's brief mentions of smart growth and new ways of designing feel largely extraneous to the business at hand. Thus, the 51-page chapter on suburban street design devotes two pages to pedestrians, and the list of suggested readings in the chapter on development patterns and principles includes no work published since 1990. A Must Have Pub

Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.
ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

A Book for the Project Engineer Engaged in Land Development

This book is the first book that really reflects and addresses most of the "everyday" issues encountered in site design and land development. It has a practical application and includes most of the charts, tables and nomographs that are necessary to complete a given design procedure. It also provides very appropriate and helpful examples.

An excellent reference for engineers at all levels.

The book is thorough in its presentation of every aspect of land development. It examines the intricacies involved in a project from planning to engineering to construction stakeout. The authors apply all this knowledge in a Case Study of an actual development which they planned and designed. Numerous graphics, tables and charts were employed to reinforces the information in the text.
Obviously some of the design information will not be applicable to the entire country. However the authors do suggest where locally relevent design information can be found.
Overall, I found the book very informative, easily read and well organized.

In October 1998, a wayward tropical storm blossomed into one of the most powerful hurricanes in modern history. When it finished its devastating course throughout the Caribbean, Hurricane Mitch had killed thousands of people, left hundreds of thousands more homeless, and destroyed whole towns. Journalist Jim Carrier turns up a small but telling incident: the disappearance of a 282-foot schooner called the Fantome. Guided by a young but accomplished English captain and manned by seasoned West Indian sailors, the cruise ship put into port in Belize to discharge its passengers, then set out to sea in an attempt to outrace a storm that, defying expectation, changed its course and in the end sent the Fantome and its crew beneath the waves. All that was terrible enough; added to it was the legal battle that awaited the crew's survivors, one that hung over the disaster "like a poisonous cloud." Following the Fantome's course hour by hour, Carrier covers all aspects of the incident thoroughly and sympathetically. In October 1998, Hurricane Mitch terrorized the Caribbean and Central America, leaving thousands dead, causing billions of dollars in damage, and crippling countries. In the midst of it struggled Guyan March, captain of the Fantome, the largest ship owned by Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. Having determined the Fantome was too big to seek safe harbor in any of the nearby ports, Windjammer and Captain March made the last-minute decision to take the ship out to sea in an attempt to get out of the storm's path. Carrier's account of this desperate race traces the development and erratic path of the storm as it consistently defied all predictions, relates the communications between Windjammer and the Fantome as they ran out of options, and pieces together what must have been the last few minutes of the ship and of the crew's lives. The heart-wrenching testimony of the crew's families, horror stories of survivors on land, and scientific background from the meteorologists provide a thoroughly detailed context in which to view one of the worst hurricanes in recorded history. The worst hurricane in history and the worst book about it.

This is a book about one of the worst hurricanes in history. It is also one of the worst books in history. The title is misleading. It would be better titled "The Storm and a Little Bit About a Ship." There is so much data, over and over again, about hurricane Mitch. Here is a brief synopsis of this terrible book:

"There is a unique cruise line (Windjammers) that offers vacations for hedonistic people on tall ships. They serve a lot of rum swizzles and people like to hook up with strangers on the cruises. A storm comes up, they take the people off the ship and fly them home. The people are disappointed. The ship tries to escape the storm. We don't know what happened to the ship and its crew and never hear from them again. People are sad. The end."

The ship and the storm scenario doesn't really develop in the book until about the 60% mark, and it lasts until about the 75% mark. The rest of the book is describing the storm, e.g., It's now a category 2 storm, oh wait, it's a category 3, now a category 4; on and on. The first half of the book describes the people on the ship, passengers and crew alike. None of them are memorable and I found myself not caring about any of them. It was like someone inviting you to their home to watch home movies of their second cousins, whom you don't know and could really care less.

What kept me going in this book was that I knew there had to be some action in it somewhere...but alas, there was not. It was the single worst book I've read this year--or maybe any year.

I wanted to love it but I couldn't finish it. Too much tedious background on every single person connected with the ship - and there are many! I wanted some action. I gave up before the hurricane even hit in force.

How's Your 401(k)? Do It a Favor -- Read This Book

I would have to agree with John Bogle's endorsement: "This is a great book!"
While Malkiel's Random Walk covers Modern Portfolio Theory, Bogle covers the virtues of index investing, and Graham, Lynch and Fisher cover individual stock selection, studies show that asset allocation alone is responsible for over 90% of a portfolio's performance in the long run. Yet asset allocation theory seems to me to be under-represented in the investment literature for non-professionals.
Bernstein's book goes a long way to correct this gap. He starts out almost too simply. Bernstein takes the reader step-by-step through a discussion of basic financial math and statistics (hitting variance and correlation coefficients in particular) as he builds the case and explanation behind asset diversification. He writes to an intelligent audience but does not assume a mathematical or financial background. I like that he encourages the reader to take a chapter at a time. He instructs the reader to finish the chapter, and then put the book down and get back to life. This adds to the methodical tone of the book: a step at a time.
In the final chapter "Odds and Ends" the author changes gears. Suddenly we are in the world of - well - odds and ends, the finer points of portfolio management. This was the most interesting part of the book for me. Here Bernstein reviews the case for index investing and - of special interest to me - value investing. What is the premium in returns for small vs. large caps, value vs. growth? Which MPT stat, P/E or P/B is the better predictor of future performance? Why is value averaging so important and yet so counter intuitive? This chapter alone was worth the price of the book.
Finally, Bernstein shares the wealth. The bibliography and recommending reading sections are terrific. This alone might be worth twice the price of the book.
In a time when we are all more intimately involved with the management of our retirement accounts, I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone and everyone. You cannot afford not to be familiar with the contents of this book. Highly recommended.

Diversify Your Assets

You can make a lot of money in the stock market. You can also lose a lot of money; this book explores modern thinking about the tradeoffs that determine risk and return in investing. Starting from the premise that statistical analysis provides the tools needed to evaluate risk, the author proceeds from there to present analyses based on modern research in economics and finance.
The average investor may not like the authors premise, since it surmises that markets are reasonably efficient in pricing asssets and that the average investor faces very daunting odds when trying to outperform the market. The analyses fly in the face of most popularly available investing advice, which dwells on predicting trends, picking stocks and market timing. Most investors believe that they can predict the market to some degree (see Bernstein's "Four Pillars" book on overconfidence, or one of the previous reviewers), but Bernstein contends that the market performs in surprising ways that prevent the prediction of returns over short periods.
The evidence for this unpredictability, provided in this and the author's other works (The "Pillars" book and his web site, The Efficient Frontier) is compelling. How much risk does the investor endure while modeling the market based on previous performance? Some aspects of risk and return for broadly defined asset classes are quantifiable, and these quantitations are discussed in the present volume.
My criticisms are minor; I think the author foreshadows the text's math difficulty way too much (most of the public is math averse, I hear). You might read the "Pillars" book first if you are uncertain of your math skills ... anyone familiar with topics like covariance and autocorrellation will breeze through the math in this book. The disclaimer (after some buildup) of MVO backtesting in the middle of the book is a bit of a letdown, but the allocation strategies in the "Pillars" book undo that to some degree. Otherwise, an enthusiastic recommendation. I recommend that every investor read this or the "Pillars" book and apply these ideas carefully and objectively to their own investment strategy.

About the Author
Neil Sclater began his career as an engineer in the military--aerospace industry and a Boston engineering consulting firm before changing his career path to writing and editing on electronics and electromechanical subjects. He was a staff editor for engineering publications in electronic design, instrumentation, and product engineering, including McGraw-Hill's PRODUCT ENGINEERING mgazine, before starting his own business as a consultant and contributing editor in technical communication.

For the next 25 years, Mr. Sclater served a diversified list of industrial clients by writing marketing studies, technical articles, brochures, and new product releases. During this period, he also directly served a wide list of publishers by writing hundreds of by-lined articles for many different magazines and newspapers on various topics in engineering and industrial marketing.

Mr. Sclater holds degrees from Brown University and Northeastern University, and he has completed gradute courses in industrial management. He is the author or co-author of seven books on engineering subjects: six of these were published by McGraw-Hill's Professional Book Group. He previously revised and edited the Second Edition of MECHANISMS AND MECHANICAL DEVICES SOURCEBOOK after the death of Mr. Chironis.

The late Nicholas P. Chironis developed the concept for MECHANISMS AND MECHANICAL DEVICES SOURCEBOOK, and was the author/editor of the First Edition. He was a mechanical engineer and consultant in industry before joining the staff of Product Engineering magazine, as its mechanical design editor. Later in his career, he was an editor for other McGraw-Hill engineering publications. He had previously been a mechanical engineer for International Business Machines and Mergenthaler Linotype Corporation, and he was an instructor in product design at the Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York City. Mr. Chironis earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY.

Sclater's v. Parmley's books

I bought the largely similar books on mechanical components by Sclater and Parmley. Both have drawings of similar quality, to the point of having identical drawings in a number of cases (presumably because both authors used the same third-party source for the particular topic). A very few drawings were disappointing, but most were very good indeed -- and even the disappointing drawings probably would be fine for most engineers (I am not one).

There are differences. The Parmley book presents more examples of certain devices (for example, more types of linkages). But that is not true for all devices, and I'm not sure it matters in the end since both books offer quite a variety of most. For me, not being an engineer but being a fairly quick study if I'm presented with something to study, the Sclater book was preferable because it included, in most cases, more detailed introductory essays about the variouse sections: gears, screws, linkages, solenoids, etc. In some cases, though rarely, Parmley's explanations were skimpy.

I'm trying here to draw some helpful distinctions, and hope I have, but I'll close by saying that I think both are great. If I had to choose, Sclater's would win, but if you can do without the more detailed explanations and would prefer marginally more devices presented, Parmley's may suit you better.

Informative and fun

this book is for the person who likes to fool around in the workshop inventing things. I like to do that as often as I can and this book has really boosted my productivity in the shop. Before I start on a new project I like to scan the book again and see if I can use any of the ideas. I never fail to find something I can use. The drawings are a big help in understanding the devices. There is no other book like this. It is a gathering of all the neat gadgets all in one book.

An engineer friend of mine showed me this book and the next day I bought one for myself. Any time I'm faced with a design problem this is the first place I look. The illustrations are very well done and the text descriptions are illuminating and worthwhile reading.

Jim Lewis' book "Working Together" IS WORTH THE TIME AND EXPENSE! It is an outstanding read and you will learn a lot!

I love James Lewis' book, Working Together. It's about how Boeing under the leadership of Alan Mulally, probably the greatest CEO in the last 100 years took a program to build a new airplane from the ground up using 30,000 employees and brought them together as a team. Jim Lewis captures the true essence of Mulally's leadership style and about how to excel at working together. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving not only how you lead but how you work as a team in any situation, church, charity, business or family. There are outstanding principles outlined here that are worth the investment of time and money. You will learn more than you ever imagined. It is well thought out and well written. I couldn't put it down.

Well worth reading for Working Together Leadership in action (Ford and Boeing models)

Overall an outstanding book for content although somewhat uneven for presentation.

First the good. This book written in the early 2000's outlines in concise detail a leadership strategy called "Working Together" that was employed very successful by Alan Mulally at both the Boeing Company and later Ford Motor Company. It first emerged during design and build the groundbreaking 777 airplane as a way to unite cross-functional teams that included all professional disciplines and both the customer and supplier. To see this in action, I highly recommend viewing the documentary series "21st Century Jet" (now online via YouTube) or reading the companion book available through Amazon. Mulally next put this strategy in place to help Boeing weather the monumental business down turn following 9/11.

After leaving Boeing in 2006 (after this book was written) Mulally went on to take a position as CEO of Ford. At Ford, he employed the exact same Working Together principles including his weekly Business Plan Review (BPR) developed at Boeing. This book describes the BPR as it was used at Boeing c2000 to keep tabs in one weekly 2.5 hour meeting on what was then a $50B business. At Ford, he quickly instated the same practices to unite and focus this world-wide enterprise, paving the way for one of the greatest turn-arounds in business history. For details of how this played out at Ford, I highly recommend "American Icon" by Bryce Hoffman. These two books really complement each other and allow the reader to understand how consistent a leader Mulally was during this 25 year span of his career.

As a mid-level leader at one of these two companies, I can attest first hand that when these principles and practices are followed our business has flourished and employee, supplier, and customer satisfaction has soared. When we've on occasion lost touch with them, the results have been just the opposite.

Finally, I'd be remiss without mentioning a few nits with this book. There appears to have been very little proof reading as many typos are present, including some very obvious like a list of five items, numbered 1,2,3,3,5. Then there are the illustrations. With all due respect to the artist, who also happens to be the authors wife, they mostly seem to have little to do with the text and several are just downright bizarre. My copy of this book was copyright 2002, republished in 2006. Why at book written after 9/11 would include a picture of the Twin Towers with peoples faces superimposed, aside the question "How would your Organization like to be?" is beyond me.

Complaints aside, it would be a major mistake not to overlook these minor flaws and invest yourself in reading and applying the lessons in Working Together. The philosophy and practical tools outlined here are simply way too unique, proven, and powerful to ignore.

P.S. Having read both books, one last very interesting connection (and warning) is worth noting. In this book, Mulally credits the leader of the Ford Taurus program in the 1980's for giving Boeing the first skeleton outline of Working Together. It helped them design a car that could go up against the Japanese and Europeans for value and quality. After running with it at Boeing for the next 15 years, Mulally brought it back to Ford, where these practices had most obviously been forgotten. He was even shocked to find they'd killed off the Taurus brand, the very birthplace of this philosophy. Mulally proceeded quickly to revive both Working Together and the Taurus. The clear lesson here is even when principles and practices are sound, new leaders who lose their bearing through unsound ideas can poison the well.

Easy to read, Easy to Apply

This book is based on the Boeing project. James Lewis takes principles he learned from the team at Boeing and explains them to this new book. He has a writing style that is very easy to follow and understand. His principles are backed with good examples. This is a book for all business and team leaders to read and add to your library.
