This is a great book, not only for its in depth coverage and clinical pearls about running medicine, but even more so for its broader applicability to the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal and sports medicine....a great addition to any physician's book shelf.

About the Author
Terry T. Lankford has been a Weather Specialist with the FAA for nearly 30 years, and is the author of three titles in McGraw-Hill's Practical Flying Series: Understanding Aeronautical Charts, 2nd Edition, Cockpit Weather Decisions, and all three editions of this book. He also wrote Aircraft Icing. A pilot since 1967, he also holds single-engine, multiengine, and instrument ratings, as well as an FAA Gold Seal Instructor certificate. An FAA accident prevention counselor, he earned the Flight Safety Award in 1979. Lankford also contributes articles to pilot periodicals.

Must buy

This is the BEST weather book out there. I teach out of this book vice the Jeppesen due to more material depth and detail. Very easy to read and is a great read for every student-instrument pilot. Material requires an update to follow some of the new products, removal of a few, and the new AFSS system. Book is current as of 2000, so still very relevant but needs a update (why I took one star away)

Highly Disappointed

The information at the back cover is very misleading.
The content of the book has nothing to do with Design or Process Engineering. It is basically an accumulation of various Organic reaction equations, with some very simple flow charts.
That's how the book starts, and also how it ends.
Indeed among Dozens of Engineering books that I have purchased, this one is definitelly the only useless one.
So please do not waste your time or burn your money.

Very useful & practical for optics/photonics practitioners

Very good book, with a lots of "short cuts" and good "back of an envelop" estimations However, high degree of subject understanding is required when practicing these short cuts. So be careful!
One topics omitted is that of Microscopy (one entry). There are a lots of Rules of Thumb that can help with resolution, magnification, NA or f/#, field of view, depth of field, depth of focus, working distance, etc. Perhaps these can be added to a subsequent edition of the book.

Even though nearly 80 percent of the world's population is still without access to even a telephone, pundits have already begun to announce the end of the Information Age. Here, Jensen proclaims "the dream society." Makes sense and an easy read

The book is the result of 15 yrs work at the Copenhagen Institute for Future Studies. I bought it to read on my holiday but finished it two weeks beforehand! It made some really interesting points:
* Man has been around for c.100,000yrs: 90,000 as hunter-gatherer, 10,000 as farmer, 200 in industry and maybe 30 in IT. This book provides a glimpse of what comes next!
* We will see a move from the rational to the emotional. `The successful companies of the twenty-first century...besides meeting the social and emotional needs of employees...will want to cater to consumers' emotional and social needs' [e.g. Shopping Malls as Theme Parks?].
* Current accounting methods measure `the company's capital at night...when all employees have gone home'. The author discusses Intellectual Capital: salary negotiations as establishing an employee's value as a company asset and the `real cost of layoffs...just as if tossing computers out the window would destroy physical capital, layoffs involve throwing away human capital. If we are talking top-quality computers with modern software this is a bad idea.'
* In a concept that may have significant employee training and development implications, the author quotes Tom Peters: `Brand yourself' and believes that `the "branded" employee will triumph over the Brand X employee...increase awareness about your existence and skills...'

An interesting book about tomorrow - reality or fiction?

Why do some people buy a watch at $ 10.000, when you can get a much more precise one at $ 10? Because time is not the essential thing - it's about dreams, lifestyles and adventure. Why is the automobile the "New Beetle" such a big success? Because it looks almost like the old one (apart from new technology). Why is the movie "Titanic" the greatest blockbuster of our time? Because it's a story about a ship, a journey into nostalgia, feelings and lifestyles of persons 87 years ago. Dreams, stories, lifestyles, feelings, adventure, nostalgia, care - you'll get all the questions and answers in this well-written and provocative book about the next 25 years in the affluent societies. It's difficult to find arguments against the many examples and facts in this amazing book. Just to mention two examples: according to the author, doctors will gradually be replaced by automation within the health care sector, but nurses will get their golden age because of the explosive need to provide for care in the coming years. And: "The story can be told with a whole range of products, the product themselves being secondary". This is the reason why people buy Marlboro, Nike, BMW, Rolex and other brands at a price many times the price for other more unknown products. There is always a story behind: adventure(Marlboro-man), lifestyle (Nike) or nostalgia (BMW-oldtimers). This well-structured book is not about utopia, it's about the changing patterns of our daily lives, and it's already happening...

Every once in a while, a management guru or academician writes a book so idealistic and simple in its basic premise that it appeals to scholars and businesspeople alike solely for the inherent beauty in its simplicity. Much like the appeal of fairy tales or biographies. No fuss, no complexity, no crooked lines. But whereas this way of storytelling is charming when describing a lifelong career or the fate of princess or princesses, it becomes downright repulsive when applied to modern business and economics. Not only repulsive, but also dangerous. Jensen is learned and a fine raconteur at that, which he uses to his advantage in this book. The basic premise, that corporations of today are selling stories instead of products is intriguing, if not completely original (Pine & Gilmore described the progression of economic offerings towards experience and entertainment in their 1999 book "The Experience Economy"). Had Jensen stayed within the boundaries of a conventional management book, i.e. simplified descriptions and corporate nice-to-know facts, The Dream Society would have been a fair effort, if slightly trivial. The big misstep that Jensen makes is that he, like too many other colleagues, starts to add a philantrophical aspect to his ideas. Not only can the striving towards a dream society be applied to goods and services, but also on the modern family, on the third world, on modern labour, globalization, urbanization etc. In fact, so amazing is Jensens Dream paradigm that there is no area or phenomenon that is left unexplored. Actually, "unexplored" is an inaccurate description. There is no area that Jensen doesn't beleaguer with his newly found buzzword-baby. That's where the book sets off on thin ice. To fully explore a principle, such as "The Dream Society", one must look at its flaws and dangers. The term "fundamentalist" is what we use to describe the people that don't and instead take the written word as the formula to follow. Jensen displays similar dogma and fanaticism in his belief that The Dream Society is our goal and destiny. As he runs astray from the description of economic offerings, he looses the integrity that he displays in the early chapters of the book, his "succesful" attempts to apply the theory to, well, anything become more comical... and questionable.

It is an anthology containing 176 poems, written by 75 poets, covering the time frame commencing in 1869 and ending in 2001. The book is very well organized so that readers can quickly find poems that interest them. There are sections on soaring, the beauty of flight, war and the military, astronauts, classics and even a special section for children. It covers life and death, as well as the personalities of many pilots. The section related to soaring contains 16 poems, including some of the best ever published by Soaring Magazine.

It was published in the fall of last year by McGraw-Hill Publishers.

"I didn't knew it was dangerous. I just thought it was glamorous," said Rodgers, 43, of Colleyville, a free-lance writer who has written for Family Circle magazine.

So flight has often been a theme in Rodgers' writing as she grew into an adult, an interest fanned by her marrage 22 years ago to an Air Force fighter pilot. Six of her poems have been printed in the recently published Because I Fly (McGraw-Hill, $16.95), a compilation of 170 aviation poems by 75 authors.

The definitive collection of aviation poetry

A wonderful gift, a book to dip into and read a little, for years to come. Covering the complete range of pilots and flying, this is the definitive collection of aviation poetry. What makes it great is the time and thought that has gone into the selection and arrangement. The poems are divided into subject areas, there are short biographies, sources, full listing of older anthologies. If you wanted to do this idea just right, and spent years doing it, you could not best this book.

Must Read for Aviator Families

At the end of a Naval Aviator-Commercial Pilot career, I wish I had this volume for my family (and myself) during all those years. It puts into lyrical words the thoughts and feelings of "being a bird" and why I am what I am. A good read and a bedside book. We owe Reda one at the bar.

DEPENDABLE REVISION TEXT

Let it be known that I would have rated this book higher, had it not been for the frequency of its typographical errors. Its editors and/or authors should try and do a better job in subsequent editions. But that apart, this revisional text accomplishes what it was designed to do. The message of this book is simple, precise, and self-explanatory.
Infectious diseases and their etiologic agents are daunting to study or master, and that is where the beauty of this book comes into play. Despite being a revisional text (on its own right), the authors of this book endeavored to include summarized key-points at the end of every topic they discussed. Thus, the book is an impressive blend of patient care and time management tool.
"Infectious Disease in 30 Days" is a time-efficient book, which covered a wide range of diseases. It is self-instructional, and offers illustrative information without beating about the bush. Its guidance ramified epidemiology, diagnostics, pedagogical tools, and in-depth anti-microbial therapeutics. Every chapter of it makes learning seem effortless; although, a number of topics pertaining to fungal diseases were overtly summarized. Overall, it is a good revisional handbook, which students would appreciate and depend on in time-critical periods.

Very time efficient book that gets straight to the point

I came across this book randomly in my medical school library and was a bit leary of it because of the title. "XYZ in 30 days" type titles sound hokey to me, but the book itself is anything but.

The main strength of the text is its clear, logical approach in explaining the various infectious disease syndromes. Very straightforward, great summaries of key points every few pages, and insightful, readily understandable diagrams (and good photos). Too many books written for med students present similar material but too heavily from the perspective of basic microbiology (genetics, virulence factors up the ying-yang, research speculations, etc) which is generally NOT useful for medical students (when in excess). We primarily need to know clinical presentation, course of illness, diagnostic criteria, and treatment protocols. For these categories this book is wonderful and hard to beat. It also balances this with the obligatory basic microbiology but it is not in excess and seemingly always clinically relevant.

Goal-oriented

I am currently a fourth year medical student on an infectious disease rotation. I find this book fairly helpful, notably the first chapter where it pretty much sums up everything you forgot from your microbiology course. The chapters are generally written well, but (as the publishers claim) a lot is really a review. So, if you want a brief overview of HIV/AIDs, this is the text to use, but if you want to know in depth HAART therapy, you might want to try something else. It is a fairly large book, which makes me unenthusiastic to carry around - a minus for those on-the-go medical students. As a supplement (and if you are working a consult service), I found the Washington Manual(R) Infectious Diseases Subspecialty Consult book to be very helpful.

Lessons from the Legendary Leader.

They described him at times as the best CEO in America; at times, these magazines credited GE with being the best-run company in the nation...Welch built GE into the most successful American corporation of the late twentieth century by forging and then implementing a series of business strategies that have become his trademark: Business is simple. Don't make business overly complicated. Face reality. Don't be afraid of change. Fight bureaucracy. Get boundaryless. Use the brains of your workers. Find the best ideas, inside or outside your company, and then put those ideas into practice. These strategies and others have formed the building blocks of Jack Welch's battle for corporate revolution...The Welch strategies have been described in a number of popular business books...Most of these books describe the aforementioned business strategies, and others as well, and give an excellent overview of what Welch and GE have accomplished. If you want to learn how GE operates, then read this book

This book captures the areas that are important to the businesses of GE and explains them well enough that a non-employee can understand. Being a past employee of GEIS, I found that the book explained the areas as they really are. No fluff. The book is easily set up as modules so there is no need to worry about reading one chapter to understand the next. Great Tool!

For those who need training wheels

The text of this book could be reduced to 20% its original size if the author addressed the reader as a competent, intelligent manager. Instead, it's filled with cute pictures and 'how to's' I've heard the GE Way is good; don't opt for the Fieldbook.
