About the Author
CYRIL M. HARRIS, one of the world's leading authorities on shock, vibration, and noise control, currently lectures at Columbia University where is is the Charles Batchelor Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Professor Emeritus of Architecture. Dr. Harris has received many honors for his scientific and engineering achievements, including membership in both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. He has been the recipient of the Gold Medal and the Sabine Medal of the Acoustical Society of America, the Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute, the Gold Medal of the Audio Engineering Society, and the A.I.A. Medal of the American Institute of Architects.
He received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from M.I.T. and has been awarded honorary doctorates by Northwestern University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. A Dictionary without Pronunciations?

I have seen this book and borrowed it often. An invaluable reference... BUT: how do you pronounce all of these scientific and foreign-sourced words? I guarantee you will not find them in Webster's. This is a major oversight for a book calling itself a "dictionary."

What an undertaking!

From the amateur enthusiast of architecture to the professional designer of all things functional, here is an absorbing companion. Over the years I've skimmed through these pages for pure delight, or, when time permitted and a particular name was required, perused them. Rarely if ever has this reference work failed to provide me with just the term I wanted for some turn of structure, bend of pipe, twist of woodwork, zigzag shape, lineation, fancy work, geometric form, irregular contour, patterns or whatnot. Now I know what to call various shapes of windows and window panes, configurations of stone or brick, parts and pieces of houses, plumbing, masonry, subterranean work, and so many other aspects of construction. The engravings are highly detailed and the drawings are clear and masterfully rendered.
