Good Idea - Bad Book

I completely agree with the reader who said that this book could have been written much more effectively. It is nearly 400 pages and should have been no more than 25 to 50. Most issues or thoughts in this book while being solid are explained in far far too painful of detail with a great deal of redundancy. This made reading the book extremely wasteful of my time.
Perhaps the authors should have a "Work Out" on improvement of their materials.

Sound advice for delivering speed, simplicity, and solutions

'Work-Out' is the famous organizational process that General Electric, the greatest industrial firm in the world, used to bust bureaucracy - fast.

At its core, Work-Out is a simple, straightforward concept for cutting out bureaucracy and solving organizational problems - fast. Large groups of employees and managers - from different levels and functions of the organization - come together to address issues that they identify or that senior management has raised as concerns. In small teams, people challenge prevailing assumptions about "the way we've always done things" and come up with recommendations for dramatic improvements in organizational processes. The Work-Out teams present their recommendations to a senior manager in a "town meeting", where the manager engages the entire group in a dialogue about the recommendations and then makes yes-or-no decisions on the spot. Recommendations for changing the organization are assigned to "owners" who have volunteered to carry them out and follow through to get results. That's Work-Out in a nutshell.

Work-Out can be applied to almost any type of problem. It was first used at GE to harvest the low-hanging fruit of OVERGROWN BUREAUCRACY by getting unnecessary and unproductive work out of the organizational system - e.g. reduce meetings, reports, and approval levels. They asked what procedures didn't make sense? Where were they wasting time? What activities seemed to add little value? Some of the bureaucratic procedures were expense reimbursements, making travel arrangements, obtaining office supplies, updating personnel data, taking education courses, upgrading software, and more. But also in the core functions, bureaucracy was found: filling out forms for deals, preparing presentations for approval meetings, keeping track of customer data, obtaining approval for materials purchasing, overwhelming amounts of extra analysis to justify various investments or initiatives. Some of the results were e.g. that expense accounts did not need multiple approvals, people could purchase approved software without going through the IT department, and a pre-deal process was established to see if deals were worth pursuing before going through all the analytics.

Work-Out has been successfully adapted to any type of organization - public or private, commercial or non-profit, large or small. In all of these organizations, no matter what the issue, the process remains much the same.

1. Bring together the people from the organization who know the issues best
2. Challenge them to develop creative solutions
3. Decide on the solutions immediately in a public forum
4. Empower people to carry them out

Despite its massive impact on GE and other firms, Work-Out is not a snake oil or magic elixir. It is a simple set of concepts, tools, and experiences. When stripped to its essence, Work-Out allows people to get some obstacles out of the way so they can do their work better. In many firms, that alone would be a significant gain.

The real merit of this book is the practical approach. If you are - as I am - struggling with the challenges of continually keeping our organizations lean, then this book can help you. It contains many inspiring worksheets, action plans, tools, and hands-on case studies.

The authors of this book helped GE create Work-Out. So don't expect theoretical contributions. Only sound advice.

Co-author Dave Ulrich is one of my favourite HR experts. I can recommend many of his books, e.g. `Results-Based Leadership' and `Delivering Results'. To him, HR is about delivering business performance and organizational capabilities. Cause if you don't, you'll soon be out of business. The tricky part is balancing the soft and hard part of HR. Dave Ulrich has many good concepts to make that happen. This book is not a bad place to start, if you'd like to pick his brains...

Great. Lots of first-hand tips to turnaround a large company

Unlike other books on Six Sigma that focus on variation reduction, statistics and other tools, this book is full of practical examples of techniques and implementation tips. The focal point of the book is on the process of generating the turnaround in a large conglomerate such as GE. In this case the aspects of organizational behavior constitute THE critical success factor (rather than statistical/other tools). Workout has undoubtedly been fundamental for generating the cultural transformation in GE. This book is addressing these organizational behavior aspects in a pragmatic manner presenting a detailed road-map from planning all the way through implementation.
Most examples deal with administration/bureaucracy and I would have expected to read more on operational aspects such as value chain improvement in a Production/Logistics environment.
This book is a must for top managers that search for a generic methodology to translate their vision into reality.

Thorough, not complete.

After only 29 pages I found myself constantly asking "what is that, and when did the author define it?". Additionally, there are enough oddly worded sentences that I am unable to follow what is being said. Perhaps I am not the intended audience for the book, but since Sulkin did not include a forward, I can't tell. I am trying to use this as an initial guide to PBX, and find it lacking enought that I am now looking for another book.

Good overview of the world of voice communications

This book is a bit outdated since it is from the last decade but it met most of my objectives since I wanted to learn more about the fundamentals of voice communications including: PSTN, ISDN, PBXs, etc.

This is not a introductory book for novices.

I felt that this book was not proofread enough, i.e. the editors were not thorough enough as I did find quite a few errors: duplicate sentences, typos, o instead of 0, etc.

great information

I bought this book to help me make decisions on future boat purchases and it did the job!

The basic benefit I've received by reading this book is that I can know what to expect out of any boat I will purchase. In addition, there's information about how to load the boat properly for it to perform well in rough conditions, explaintion of bulkheads design, deck design, dewatering systems, fire extinguishing systems, helm layout, etc.

When I think about boats I've owned in the past, they performed exactly as Eric Sorensen stated they would. The book exceeded my expectations and I am now more confidence in every aspect of boating.

A great book for those studying or who've completed the CFA

This is the only book of its kind, so far. The author compiled this pocket guide after completing his CFA program and realising that the vast concepts, terms and designations learnt were soon being forgotten.
That being the case, candidates of, as well as those who have completed, the CFA program would find this book a useful one-stop guide to all those concepts, terms and designations learnt in the pursuit of the CFA designation.
The book is arranged broadly around the various topics of the CFA program i.e. Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Statements Analysis, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Real Estate, Portfolio Management, Ethics, Behavioural Finance. As such, the CFA candidate would find this book more useful than say, a general finance/business masters student.
But I reckon that this book, though published as recent as this year, is already in need of an update. The CFA syllabus is constantly evolving. As a result, a number of concepts in say, Level 1 of the CFA Program, are not found in this book. Also, a number of the textbooks used in the CFA program which the author had based his book on, have either been superseded by newer editions or replaced all together.
All in all, I found this to be a useful book and a unique concept. Until a better book comes along, I will be using this book religiously to prepare for the CFA exams as well as to refresh my memory.

Useful overview, but not perfect

I'm not a CFA candidate, but I've been an investor for years and always appreciate learning more about the field. My father was president of the CFA for a couple of years, and after 15 years working on Wall Street I have a reasonably broad understanding of some finance.
What impressed me most about the book was how short and terse the definitions were. Clearly they are useful and present good insight into what's important and why.
What impressed me least was the lack of mathematical rigour (perhaps one can't have both brievity and exactness?). For example, many of the formulas only work for specific instances, and details about yield/rate conventions are omitted.
Overall, it struck me as useful overview and quick reminder to financial analysis and the language/terms used. It's not really indispensable, and is not authoritative. But for a quick refresher, or ballpark estimates it's fine.

Good starting point

As a CFA candidate, I find this to be a useful summary of the key concepts that we are taught during the course of the programme. However, regard it as more of a "Cliff's Notes" of the programme -- with all its inevitable shortcomings -- but a handy little reference piece nonetheless. After completion of the programme and years down the road, I am sure that I will find it quite useful in helping to jog my memory and the sleepless nights that the CFA programme gave me! -- I hope, however, that a revised version will be introduced and perhaps with a less odd title. It is not a book for everyone, but anyone who wishes that s/he had made notes whilst studying for the CFA programme will find this book useful.

Easy to understand strategy

This is an easy to understand book about strategic thinking. Robert doesn't use complicated terminology or hard to understand concepts. His method for formulating and implementing strategy is straightforward and consise. Anyone wishing to improve their company's strategy should read this book.
Although by itself the book was good and I recommend it, I was disappointed that Robert didn't provide much new information over his previous book Strategy Pure and Simple II. In fact, Robert used many of the same case studies (already three years old in some cases) and the chapters were very similar to his previous book. I also got the sense that the complete methodology he proposes was missing, and his real intention was to have readers call his company for the missing links. For instance, one case study mentions their use of a decision analysis, and potential problem analysis taught by Robert. These seem to be valuable tools that anyone using his method would want to know. Great way to generate new business, but he could have been more complete.
I still think it's a good book because it gets you going in the right direction, and helps you organize your thoughts using a proven process. Unfortunately, you will only truly benefit from his process by hiring his firm.

Good ideas but too much hype

Michel Robert does a very good job of structuring and focusing the process of strategy development. At the very root is simplicity, focus and integrity. The most valuable concepts of the book are: (1) the driving force - what makes your business move forward and what with an `invisible hand' structures your organization, (2) business concept and (3) zones of excellence. All these concepts are clearly and well explained. They are also thought provoking, insightful and energizing.
But going further through the book becomes more and more exasperating. There too much annoying hype almost on every page and especially in business cases. Often they sound all alike. "We had problems and didn't know what to do. Then we called Robert and guys from DPI opened our eyes. And we started to use DPI Strategic Process ™ and DPI Decision Making ™ and DPI Keep It Simple Stupid ™ and made a lot of money. And we also lost 20 pounds in three weeks. Just call 1-800-Robert..." The author definitely has all rights to promote his company any way he likes but if he believes that his books are read not only by neurotic losers then he should cool down a bit. There is definitely a conflict between content and realization.
Probably as a result of all that hype the book is often repetitive. I believe it is based on a standard promotion presentation. This belief is supported by many silly pictures definitely copied and pasted from PowerPoint. The book is also structured as a presentation: "Tell them what we want to tell. Tell them. Tell them what you told them." All the promotion presentation tricks are also there, namely: (1) Leave many important things behind, just mention them, (2) Give them an impression that without you they wouldn't really make it, (3) Position yourself as a unique consultant - don't forget to mention that other consultants (incl. BSG, McKinsey, etc.) are not good.
To put it short, "The Power of Strategic Thinking" is a book based on DPI promotion presentation. Some really good ideas about business strategy are thickly dressed with hype.

Just the book for a thoughtful individual investor

I am an individual investor, and am doing my damnest to educate myself and find my personal profitable trading niche. My first step towards success was when I learned to recognize the CNBC and Wall Street bulls--t for what it is. I've been studying every available investment book, in search of comprehension.
I rate this one very highly (even if the style is on occasion a bit turgid) because it provides a solid educational foundation into the workings of the market, and a solid grounding in understanding how to be a profitable contrarian by better identifying symptoms of crowd excess (hence, intermediate term tops and bottoms).

A Book for Market Novices

In my opinion, this book has virtually nothing new to add to the concept of using volume in trading. A novice in the market might find this to be a useful summary, but I was very disappointed with a rehash presented here. William O'Neil's books have most of this information. This is the first book I have ever returned to Amazon for a refund.

no new concepts or trading rules to learn

i read the 2 reviews beforme mine and agree with both of them. if you're new and searching for some foundation, this is an ok book to learn a bit about the effects of volume. however, if you're familiar with the basics of trading and the various techniques of technical analysis. this book is not much of a use.
it describes 2 volume based indicators but doesnt tell you how it should be used; it describes various high volume situations but doesnt really tell you what to do (in honesty, no one can!).
if you're not new to trading but looking for some fresh idea, this isnt the book.

Fantastic guide for the non-genetically gifted

In 2002 I bought Arnold's bodybuilding book and within a few months I stopped gaining strength, and started experiencing back pain. My doctor had me take an MRI, and after multiple visits to chiropractor I stopped power lifting (clean and press most likely culprit for back problems).
I then read everything I could get my hands on about how muscles worked and grew in size. Everything pointed to intensity of training as the key. I read "Maximize Your Training" edited by Matt Brzycki cover to cover (extensive references to why HIT works). I poured over research references almost every evening for 2 months (I'm a chemical researcher, so I know how to access references)
Everything kept leading back to Mike Mentzer, not necessarily as the originator of HIT, but as the person most-respected and least `connected.' Like me, he looked at the research and modified his approach as he learned. He trained others and kept careful notes as to the response of his clients.
High-Intensity Training is both a testament to Mike's personality, and a testament to the absolute scientific facts behind the training methods. I have been able to find multiple independent references to all of the principles presented in the book, and, just between you, me, and everyone else, IT WORKS!
My girlfriend stopped working out with me because, "She was starting to look muscular." Yes, `Girls Guide' it works with women too.
I understand why Mike included all the `extraneous' chapters covering philosophy and his seven principles. I get funny looks at the club when I work out, and have had several people attempt to "help me." To explain why I do what I do, I need to draw on his `Identity' and `Intensity' principles. I have lost weight every week, and gained strength every workout since reading Mike and John's book.
The book has a few shortcomings, which are easily addressed.
1- No references to scientific studies. Answer- Buy "Maximize Your Training" edited by Matt Brzycki. Go to [website] or other websites
2- Not enough explanation for exercises. Answer- Buy "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook On Weight-Training Technique" by Stuart McRobert
3- Not enough variety for a life-long pursuit. Answer- Do your own research continually as HIT is still in its infancy. This booker is a primer and autobiography, meant to inspire as much as inform.

The only valid theory of productive exercise

I was first introduced to the concept of high intensity training by Mike's articles in Iron Man magazine in the early 90's. For the first time ever, I began to see consistent, noticable improvements on a workout to workout basis, initially gaining over 25 pounds of muscle over a period of only a few months. I eventually became certified as a personal trainer by the SuperSlow Exercise Guild, who also advocate a high intensity training (HIT) protocol similar to Mike's, the only major difference being the use of a slower rep cadence which provides for a lower risk of injuries. Having trained hundreds of clients using HIT since 1994, I can say with absolute confidence that it is by far the safest, most productive, and most time efficient way to train. Whatever is in second place is so far behind as to not even be in the running.
HIT is not, as some reviewers have erroneously stated, conducive to injuries, so long as the exercises are performed properly - that is, using strict form and a smooth, controlled speed of movement. Lift the weights slowly and under strict control, and reverse direction smoothly, rather than simply swinging, bouncing or throwing them up and then allowing them to drop the way most people do in the gym. It isn't the amount of weight that causes injuries, but the manner in which one attempts to lift it. HIT is perfectly safe if the exercises are performed properly. Mike addresses this issue in the book.
HIT does happen to be the "be all, end all" of exercise. There can only be one best, one most efficient, one most effective means of accomplishing a particular goal, and where exercise is concerned, this is it. The principles of productive exercise are the same for all of us, it is merely the specifics that must be adjusted for individual differences, which is accounted for in HIT theory, and in Mike's books. Even if another training method produced similar results, if it required you to spend a greater amount of time in the gym it could still not be considered equal, since the return on investment would be lower. For those who's social lives revolve around the gym or who are stuck in their ways, this may take some getting used to. Personally, I'd rather spend only as much time in the gym as necessary to get the best results. The purpose of exercise is to improve the quality of your life, and NOT to be the center of it.
Get in the gym, train hard, then get out and enjoy your life.
This is the most thorough of all of Mike's books. It covers all of the principles of his Heavy Duty high intensity training system in detail, and provides routines and explanations of the performance of various exercises. There is a section with information specifically written for the competitive bodybuilder on peaking, definition and posing. Mike also discusses his views on motivation in the gym, which I believe many will benefit from.

It must be tried to be believed

(As strictly a primer of bodybuilding science, 5 stars. As a book for the average gym-goer: 4 stars.) If I could give every bodybuilder one book, THIS would be it. There is so much confusion in the sport that Mentzer's message has been drowned out by myth, rumor, scepticism, and outright lies.
