She is also Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (Rochester, MN) and serves as Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Better than any text

Very helpful review book. I basically studied nothing but this for my psychiatry block in med school and I passed the final easily. Obviously not detailed enough for someone who is actually going into psych, but definitely has everything that a non-psychiatrist needs to know to get through the psych questions in med-school and on boards.

I recently took the psychiatry shelf exam (today, actually) and used this book as my primary study material. What a great resource! The book itself is pretty thin at 150 pages, but it still covered all of the topics I saw on my exam. The pharmacology chapter, in particular, was very helpful for the shelf. Psychiatry can be overwhelming, especially with all of the different lists of DSM IV criteria. This book does an excellent job of organizing the different psychiatric conditions in a way that is easy to remember. In particular, I like how it used bullet points in the margins to highlight the differences between similar diagnoses (since, let's face it, many psychiatric conditions are easily confused). The slender size of this book makes it feasible to read it 2 or 3 times during the rotation. I left the exam today feeling like I had been well-prepared. Good luck!

Good review of key concepts

This book was good for reviewing the key concepts of psych. I think that studying this book and doing lots of practice questions will get you the grade you want on the shelf.
