About the Author

A book like this is sort of a double-edged sword. Sure, when dealing with the lay person whose interest in physics (and the like) is sparked more by a temporal curiosity than by a need to know, 'popular' works like this tend to cover as much as necessary in as little space as possible, and in a way that translates easily for the non-specialist. As such, I applaud Dr. Lightman for not only attempting to educate the "simply curious" on very complicated areas of science but actually doing a noble job in the process.

Nevertheless, there are problems by which educators and science enthusiasts alike will simply cringe when reading (as Jesse Engelberg intimated). One example from among the questionable portions of the text will serve to prove this point. In the opening section concerning the Conservation of Energy, the author does a remarkable job in deriving many of the equations leading up to the first law of thermodynamics; however, he makes a much-too-often-committed mistake concerning molecular motion at absolute zero. From page 44 the text reads:

"Zero degrees Kelvin is called absolute zero. It is the coldest that any substance can be. From [Equation (I-14){provided on page 43}], we see that absolute zero means that =0, which can be achieved only if every single molecule in the substance is motionless (aside from ordered motions). If even a single molecule is moving, then will be larger than zero, and the substance will have a temperature higher than absolute zero."

Aside from the author's unexplored meaning of what an "ordered motion" is (perhaps this is the vibrational motion contended for in the following), anyone amply versed in Physical Chemistry and Thermodynamics is well aware that molecules are motionless at absolute zero only when referring to translational and rotational motion--not vibrational motion. Again, this is where a book like this would lose some of its luster by having to explain the difference to a general reader, but to say that molecules become motionless at absolute zero is utterly wrong and serves only to perpetuate misconceieved and erroneous notions of science among those reading such works for the first time. In fact, one of the fundamental tenets of quantum theory is this idea that all matter continues to execute vibrational motion, EVEN AT ABSOLUTE ZERO. It would be hard to believe that someone as educated as the author actually believes such a common, grievous error to be the case; hence, he should have qualified the statement a little more clearly by pointing out that translational and rotational motion are being referred to in the context (which of course would have demanded a longer and more arduous discussion on each type of motion) or he should have simply taken this portion out of the text.

As such, I am in agreement with the final comment made by Jesse Engelberg, namely: "buy this book if you are already conversant with the physics it discusses (thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and relativity) and want to read about the history and philosophy of them." While I do not see the need to "only" buy the book if one is already well exposed to physics and has a desire to learn its history, I would warn new readers to pay more attention to the history and development of the ideas delineated in the work rather than some of the final equations (which do not always conform to scientific convention anyway) and quantitative data.

Very simply, get a feel for what is being said as a whole and seek the meat of the details elsewhere.

Great Ideas in a Digestible Format

Alan Lightman, Senior Lecturer in Physics at MIT and author of the recent best-seller _Einstein's Dreams_, serves up four fundamental concepts that form the foundation of modern physics in an easy-to-read, comfortable manner. Not being a physics buff, I was pleasantly surprised at the ease with which Lightman commands and communicates his subject. After developing a beginner's understanding of the conservation of energy, the second law of thermodynamics, the theory of relativity, and quantum mechanics, it is fascinating to watch each of these ideas find traction in the world around you. For those who might view physics as an esoteric field that bears no real relevance to the lives of ordinary people, Lightman encourages them to look at the impact of these ideas, not only the science of the modern world, but on the social, spiritual, and intellectual aspects of the modern era as well. By weaving passages from writers, philosophers, theologians, and social theorists, Lightman explores the wide-ranging impact that physics has had on every academic field imaginable.

While some may find the text to be pedestrian and lack the hard math of more ambitious texts, this book is not geared towards experts and should not be considered anything more than a fun read for the informed. If you're ready to begin exploring the world of physics, this is a nice place to start. Just be prepared to view the world differently after you're done.

Best of both worlds

Presentation Skills for Managers by Jennifer and Mike Rotondo is the ideal book for busy presenters who need a thorough grounding in the art and science of presentation skills. The book is small but very complete, covering everything from planning to execution. Checklists and reviews at the end of each chapter keep you focused and organized.
I was very impressed with the wisdom of the two authors. This book doesn't gloss over its topic but rather provides very important information in a readable format. It starts by explaining how you should prepare from the outset and then explains the process of converting your research and outline into a PowerPoint presentation.
While this book does not cover PowerPoint in detail, it does explain the necessary steps for using PowerPoint to create a presentation. This combination of theory and practice is unique and very useful because the actual process involves both the conceptualization of the presentation's structure and the execution in PowerPoint. (Microsoft PowerPoint owns about 90% of the market for presentation software.) Clear steps for designing a presentation in terms of layout, consistency, and color guide you through the creation process.
Finally, Presentation Skills for Manager explains in detail how to deliver your great presentation, including a guide to dealing with questions, your own nervousness, technical disasters, and much more. A great guide for presenters at any level

You can tell Rotondo really knows what she is talking
about. This book is a great guide on how to get your
point across effectively. She mixes good knowledge on
various items from PowerPoint design, room set-up,
effective delivery tips, and content structuring. I
have attended seminars before on how to give good
presentations, but they just focused on public
speaking. This book covers everything from the
creation process all the way to the `Question &
Answer' session at the end of a presentation. The easy
layout of every chapter with icons and helpful hints
ensures that the reading is short and concise. I have
found this is a great "go-to" book whenever I start a
new presentation.

This book is written for those who are looking to right to the bottom line, something a busy manager can appreciate. It has offered me several tips on how to make a great presentation. Fantastic, wonderful, invaluable. Period.

At my place of work I have access to *every* RF/wireless circuit and system design book published since 1969, covering everything from books for the beginner all the way up to books for the extremely advanced RF engineer. In other words, I know what is out there when it comes to wireless circuit design books. Complete Wireless Design fills the huge gap between the cookbook/beginner style of book [which has too much missing info; neglects the disastrous RF design "gotch-yas"; and is not adaptable enough for real life design], and the advanced calculus riddled books [which can be too limited in scope; sometimes are totally incomprehensible; don't address the practical side of engineering; and rarely bother to show detailed schematics of the circuits they are so deeply discussing]. Complete Wireless Design's target is distinctly the practical, and not the theoretical [NOTE: Some university-based teachers or certain engineers may be put-off by this strongly practical, no-nonsense "let's get the circuit designed NOW!" approach, but since my own day to day work pressures force me to swiftly design RF circuits, I personally do not have a problem with this]. While no book can, obviously, be totally complete, Complete Wireless Design comes as close to this ideal as I have seen in my almost 30 years of hardcore RF circuit design experience.

The wireless design programs alone are worth the price!

The free wireless circuit design and simulation software that comes with this book have proven extremely valuable to me, unlike many such programs that come with other electronics books. I am able to build a complete amplifier, filter, or oscillator and simulate it with one of the enclosed programs, Puff. This ups my confidence level that the design will function in real life. The other program, AppCad, will actually automatically design FET and bipolar amplifier bias circuits, detectors, microstrip, systems design calcs, etc. I hav'nt tried the EasyPLL phased locked loop design program or the Sonnet microwave simulation software.
Mr. Sayre's book has become one of the more popular ones on rf circuit design for a very good reason: It presents its material in such a way that even a software engineer such as myself can design many of the various bit and pieces of a voice or data radio by just using this one book. As far as I am concerned this is really an achievement, and is valuable to all who are interested in radio design from the low MHz to the high GHz regions. It covers a very large range of information needed on RF engineering, and not only discrete level circuit design, but also systems design, digital and analog modulation, testing and troubleshooting, PCB layout, propagation, EMI, prototyping, etc. It is a great rf book with a large variety of indispensable designs and formulas.

A true one-of-a-kind guide to wireless "design". It guides you through the design process step-by-step. The author presents design procedure for every circuit that make up a complete wireless system. He also provides design hints, tips and tricks. Primarily for Electrical Engineers and circuit and electronics enthusiasts, this book is a must for its primary audience. There's so much valuable information and experience in this book you won't find anywhere else.
The book is not intended for people with no electronics or circuit design background. People without such background will find the book difficult to follow and comprehend. Communication designers and engineers, however, will be extremely delighted with this book.
I'm greatly thankful for the author for his excellent book.

Leadership Wisdom

This is a good introductory book into the principles and practice of leadership. It teaches about the leadership skills that are critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment where change is the only constant. In this case, it is essential to have leaders (rather than managers) who can provide the vision for the organization, show the direction and motivate people towards the realization of the vision.

The author clearly explains the critical attributes of a leader which include team building, good communication skills, decision making ability, and the ability to motivate and coach others for the effective accomplishment of goals.

The book is a good investment for those who in leadership positions, particularly those who are at the beginning of their careers in this field without much experience or previous training. The author gives useful tips which are excellent guide readers. The checklist at the end of each chapter is a useful tool to reinforce what the reader would have studied in the text.

If this book were an entrée, it would mostly consist of meat and potatoes. Author Marlene Caroselli accompanies her valuable handbook on the basics of leadership with insightful quotations and anecdotes. "Basic" is the operative word here. The book makes no pretense, for example, of delving into the theoretical side of leadership development. Nor does it prepare managers for specific business tasks that they're more likely to encounter as leaders, such as budgeting and strategic planning. Rather, this book is specifically tailored for current managers who have leadership ambitions, and for newly minted leaders who need a little expertise to seize control of their new roles. We recommend it as a solid menu option with lots of good advice for that eager-to-lead audience. The book is thoroughly crafted to achieve its purpose, though more experienced readers may find themselves asking, "Where's the gravy?"

I recommend this book for all of my students who are planning to attend college. The book is comprehensive, easy to follow, and unlike other books on college it has handy examples of sample resumes, worksheets for listing college visits and contacts, sample questions for interviews, timelines for scholarships and applications, and a sample of a thank you note for recommendations. The book is easy to follow and is based on Mrs. VonGruben's own personal experiences with her children. The college industry has become a big business and wise students and parents need to explore all options. This book will help them to know when to begin the college planning process, how to go about it, and enable students and parents to make wise decisions regarding college.

The worst test book I have seen

This is the worst test book I've seen. It is a waste of money, but more important, a waste of time. The only thing similar to the step 2 exam is the number of questions divided in 8 blocks. The questions are poorly written and the explanations are lame. If you are preparing for the step 2, try the Mock exam by Brochert or the Q book from Kaplan (or even better the simulated step 2 CD-ROM).

Good book

I used this book in the last two weeks before the exam...some of the questions were kinda deceptive - they appeared easier than they actually were. But the selling point for me was that it was a full exam so I simulated the exam conditions to give me some practice with my timing etc. I used this book together with the NMS review book and the Kaplan Q-book, and I did enough questions to get me a 97 on the exam.

2000 Edition is Excellent

This book is GOOD practice test for Step 2. It's set up just like the Step 2 exam with 8 blocks of 50 questions. Every question is a clinical vignette and the format of the questions is very typical of Step 2, i.e., "What is the diagnosis?" and "What is the next step?" It's definitely worth the the $25 that amazon is selling it for.

Good, but not unique!

This book is a "How-To" manual to build the Sassafras Canoes from CLC. If this is the canoe you want to build, then it is excellent and you should buy this book. If however, you want general information on building wooden canoes, don't bother. There is nothing unique in this book (for the generic canoe builder) that you cannot get from other books, or indeed by just browsing on the internet.
The one thing that I did learn was that I do NOT want to build this design. So for the price of the book, it saved me from making an expensive mistake. This is not to suggest that there is anything wrong with either the design or CLC, just that the construction method and the look of the finished canoe are not to my personal taste.

Suitable as building guide? No!

I started building the Sassafras 12 with the help of this book and regret to say that it was not a succes. After having spent a good 20 hours in measuring and cutting the planks I found that the two halves which formed each one plank, did not match. There simply was no way in positioning and bonding them into a smooth curve. I have build small boats before and have checked and rechecked every step, to no avail. E-mail contact with publisher and writer learned me that it was advised to use complete and updated full scale drawings rather than the book, although they denied the inaccuracies that I have found. For me, the book turned out to be worse than a waste of money. In the end I bought complete plans of a similar design with another design firm. Sorry to write such an unhappy review, but this is the way it is!

Stitch and Glue meets Lapstrake = Lapstitch

Well written book about building lapstrake canoes by the originator of Chesapeake Light Craft. The designs in the book are early designs from that company. He writes from vast experience and covers every detail. He uses a method called by him "lapstitch", which is lapstrake construction with stitch and glue technique on the edges of the planks.

About the Author
Keith Walters has been landing prize-winning fish since the 1950s. Since retiring as chief of photography at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, he has written articles on fishing for Salt Water Sportsman, Coastal Fisherman, and Chesapeake Bay Magazine, among many others, and self-published four books.

Learn to think outside the box...

This book covers a large gamut of things of interest to fishermen and contains many useful tips for rigging your boat/gear. As a long-time fisherman but new boat owner, I found this book encourages you to think outside the box in how you use your boat and tackle. I found a lot of value in the author's many years of experience fishing the Chesapeake (my area), and the fishing tips that come across in his descriptions of the projects. I would point out that a few of the projects are homemade versions of things that are now available in your local boating store or tackle shop (ex. pvc rod holders, built-in tackle box storage, tool holders, etc), and a few are perhaps even a little hokey--something you might only do with an older boat or to save a few bucks. However, the gamut of material this book covers from aluminum to fiberglass boats, rigs to rod repairs, etc. should appeal to all kinds of anglers. Some projects are great for those who are looking to make some of their own accessories; other projects feature practical tips that would be helpful to even the experienced angler.
