A Choice Of Disasters

Furious Earth by Ellen J. Prager [with help from Stanley Williams (Surviving Galeras), Kate Hutton (one of SoCals TV seismologists and the author of the earthquake updates on the TriNet earthquake website), and Costas Synolakis] is a well-written introduction to earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. This book appears to be aimed at junior high/high school aged readers, but adult readers who have no background in these subjects will also enjoy the book. An earlier reviewer suggested that the book has the coverage of the better chapters of an earth science textbook, but I wish high school earth science texts were this well-written. I enjoyed reading the book despite the depth of my background and appreciate the refresher course that Furious Earth gave me. My only complaint concerns the ordering of the color plates at the center of the volume. The pictures are out of order to their mention in the text and the only thing that comes to mind is that they were ordered the way they were to make them fit on a limited number of plate pages. Furious Earth belongs on the shelves in as many elementary and secondary school libraries as possible and would be a wonderful gift for a budding earth scientist.

I am a sixth grade teacher and was given this book at a science conference. After just beginning to read it, I immediatly went online to see how much the book cost- I want to order one for each for my students! It will be a bit hard and I will have to do some serious directing, but the book is an excellent example of a clear, scientific, organized, up-to-date, and interesting (yes- interesting enough for 30 sixth graders) nonfiction book in the field of earth science. Furious Earth combines "PBS-like" research discussions and theory- (Plate Techtonics Discovered, Paleotsunamis...) with "RealTV-like" examples (Italy, 79 A.D.: Vesuvuis; The World's Largest and Smallest Quakes). The book is a surprisingly suspenseful, fascinating, and easy read (for us unscientific folk). The 16 color pages of graphs and pictures also add to the subject. I can't wait to see their eyes grow when I read to them Chapter 2- Earthquakes. It starts off with the 1994 Northridge, CA quake... It hooked me at least...

very basic, simple geological concepts and explanations involving volcanology, ocanography, geophysics, etc. anybody can read this interesting book about the processes of the earth, and how humans have attempted to understand it. it is basicaly the more interesting chapters in any college-level Geology 101 course. up to date, very easy to read.

This book simply rules the subject area! If you are a practitioner looking for hands-on advice and solid methodology, this is your blueprint. It will jump-start and carry through your Supply Chain/Logistics activities. One of the best Supply Chain books I have encountered. It has a spot on my desk (as opposed to the library).
Academicians, people wanting to broaden horizons, and undergrad students will find this too technical/practical, hard-to-relate, and difficult to pad out their term papers.

Supply Chain Strategy - Classes and Book

The classes at Georgia Tech were fantastic and I have been reading the book since I have returned home.
It is the best book on the subject that I have ever read and I will keep it on my book shelf right next to Gordon Garham's Inventory Management for future reference. I don't want to sound stupid but I like tech books that have a lot of pictures. Dr. Ed Frazelle is a great teacher and I give both the classes and the book my most enthusiastic recommendation.

Typos Galore

This is a comprehensive high-level book for someone who is familiar with, but needs more information on supply chain. It covers the major areas with a good level of detail.
HOWEVER, there are numerous typos and misspellings. For example, a major table on p.36 has its headings transposed, which leaves the readers trying to guess what the author had in mind. If I'm paying $40-50 for a book, I expect that it would be well-edited.

poor compared to blueprints

I bought this book as well as Blueprints and Case Files because they were all highly rated. Generally I found Blueprints to be far better than First Aid. It is better in preparing you for the shelf and for pimping on the rounds. I found First Aid to be poorly organized and not nearly detailed enough for the shelf. The book is organized into an outline format with lots and lots of lists and bullets with little explanation and few useful mnemonics to actually help you retain the data. There were also lots of "pearls" on the margins that were more distracting than useful. Finally the book suffers from not having a table of common acronyms which made it extremely difficult to read/understand in the first week or two. Though I can imagine this book being a good review once you've already gone through the material (that's what I ended up using it for), in my opinion it is wholly inadequate as your only reading source. Blueprints and Case Files, along with a question book, are what you really need to do well on the shelf.

Excellent book...

If you don't want to plow through 600+ pages of Beckmann, or some other text (i.e. you aren't aiming to specialize in OB/Gyn), you'll love this book. Information is well organized and easy to get through if you enjoy the First Aid format. I never liked the texts...I loved the BRS outline style and First Aid books. I haven't taken the shelf exam yet, but as for my last 2 months on the wards, this book has been a great resource.

A must on OB Rotation.

Well, I just took the shelf today and can truly tell that reading this book more than once would have been beneficial.

If you have used previous First Aid books, this one is written in the similar format with many useful facts on the sides of the pages.

I read Blueprints and that was useful, however, when it came down to knowing the facts and being able to recollect them easily and quickly than this book does it best. I would recommend going through it twice (once slowly and another time as a refresher)

However, you do also need a Question book for the shelf.

I am definitely keeping this book to study for Step 2.

Fabulous timeless concepts, outdated examples

If you are building a brand or a business you need to think about positioning and branding. What is it that you want to stand for that is unique and different in the market place? Positioning isn't just for big brands - it is for any brand (even your personal brand.

I would definitely recommend this book - it is well worth the read, but I would probably only give it 3.5 stars out of 5. The main reason is that the examples are WAY out of date (the book is 30 years old). The principles still apply today, however it is tough to follow a book that is referencing examples from when I was 2 years old.

I have also read another book by the same authors "The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding" and I liked this MUCH more.

So, bottom line: It is a good book, worth a read, solid principles, but out of date. This book is especially relevant if you work for a big company (most of the examples are big company examples), but the principles can also be applied to any business, or your personal brand.
Key Points:

* The position of your brand or business is in the eyes of your prospect or customer. It doesn't matter what you think your business or brand stands for or is about. They key is the perception that your customers have. "Positioning is how you differentiate yourself in the mind of the prospect. That is, you position the product in the mind of the prospect."
* Our society is overcommunicated. Even 30 years ago there were so many commercials that you had to really work to break through the noise. "We have become the world's first overcommunicated society. Each year we send more and receive less"
* It is difficult to change minds If your positioning strategy involves changing that people already think you will have a difficult time. The best strategies are congruent with what people already think and set to add or move existing perceptions, not totally change them. Once a mind is made up it is almost impossible to change. The mind accepts only that which matches prior knowledge or experience.
* Create oversimplified messages. You are lucky if people can remember one message and associate it back to your product. Less is more. Oversimplify and stick to a single message. Link one concept to one product.
* Create a category you can win. Define the category differently so that you are the biggest/best/awesomest. It is better to be a big fish in a little pond and then expand the pond. Leadership matters. You have to be #1 or #2.
* Look for the hole. Then fill it. Where is the positioning white space? What are your competitors missing in how they are positioned. What are the customer benefits that are not being addressed or exploited by competitors? Don't fall in to the "everybody" trap. You can't be all things to all people. You will end up being nothing at all.
* 80% of learning takes place through the eyes. Words matter. Especially in the service business. You need to own a phrase. Visualize the words that you are using. The goal is to drive verbal ideas into the mind.
* Isolating a narrow target is usually the first step in finding an effective position. The narrower and better defined target the better. This will help clarify your position.

A must read, but little practical examples

A classic in marketing how-tos, the authors explain the importance of offering something for sale that appeals to the buyer, not to the seller, creator, or manufacturer. The product is positioned relative to the consumer, and her needs and viewpoints of value. The basic theory is that you get into the mind of your consumer, and position your product accordingly. And on that point, almost anyone would have to agree.
You will not find the gory details in this book that you'll need to execute a marketing plan, though, but the general theme is examined, as well as various positioning examples (everything from Kleenex to Heinz Ketchup - or was that pickles?).
I was particularly disappointed about a lack of methodology to reach a positioning statement, other than some fairly broad "rules", lightly applied throughout the book. There were six questions at the end that were helpful, but did not constitute a rigorous method - well, any method really - to create a "position". If anything, I would have wished for the method that could be used to create positioning for a product, or to test a company's current positioning, rather than have as many examples of positioning failures.
Some of the author's examples seemed contradictory, and especially when the authors claimed that brand extension amounts to a virtual see-saw - one product steals the brand identity from another (Heinz Ketchup vs. Heinz Pickles - who is Heinz!?). From hindsight, it can be seen that some brand extensions have been extremely successful, while others aren't. It should shock no one that people don't want to use baking soda as anti-perspirant, for instance, and therefore completely explaining why we use Arm & Hammer to cook and deodorize the refrigerator, but do not think of it as a personal hygiene brand. I can't think of anything that I would remove from the refrigerator and rub under my arms.
In any case, this remains a quick, good read with short chapters. The examples illustrate the concepts, but you'll need to follow this up with other positioning and marketing examples in order to position your product within your industry.

Much More Than Marketing

Positioning is the idea that shook Madison Avenue to its core in the 1970s. Ries and Trout published what the high priests of Madison Avenue deemed as heresy. These two upstarts dared to take the voodoo out of marketing - and marketing has not been the same since.
Over the years I have given away countless dozens of Positioning. I have found two types of recipients: (1) Those who view it as a book on marketing, and (2) those who truly "get it."
Positioning is not actually about marketing, though that is its platform. It is about how the human mind works. The principals taught in this book apply across all of our lives - from how we are viewed by our friends to why we affiliate with a particular political party or other social cause. Learning how Positioning works is learning about life.

Very helpful review book. I basically studied nothing but this for my psychiatry block in med school and I passed the final easily. Obviously not detailed enough for someone who is actually going into psych, but definitely has everything that a non-psychiatrist needs to know to get through the psych questions in med-school and on boards.

The book itself is pretty thin at 150 pages, but it still covered all of the topics I saw on my exam. The pharmacology chapter, in particular, was very helpful for the shelf. Psychiatry can be overwhelming, especially with all of the different lists of DSM IV criteria. This book does an excellent job of organizing the different psychiatric conditions in a way that is easy to remember. In particular, I like how it used bullet points in the margins to highlight the differences between similar diagnoses (since, let's face it, many psychiatric conditions are easily confused). The slender size of this book makes it feasible to read it 2 or 3 times during the rotation. I left the exam today feeling like I had been well-prepared. Good luck!

This book was good for reviewing the key concepts of psych. I think that studying this book and doing lots of practice questions will get you the grade you want on the shelf.

The Business Case For The Real-Time Enterprise

This book inspired me to start a company called KnowNow; I have bought a copy of the book for every executive who has joined my company to inspire them, too. The Power Of Now is a business-focused treatise on the use of publish-subscribe technology in creating highly responsive business processes. Though I agree with the reviewer who claimed the writing style is somewhat dry, I do think it is the most compelling book I've read that makes the case for IT strategists to transition to infrastructure that supports real-time applications.

Inspiring, although a little dry

I picked up a lot of ideas from this book about how to use the publish/subscribe paradigm to create value. I also discovered new ways to think about "the event-driven enterprise" and "management by exception". I recommend it for anyone considering how to create new value for the bottom line.

interesting but shallow

I was eager to read this book, to understand how publish/subscribe in general and TIBCO middleware in particular change system architecture and business strategy. What is now possible that is not supported well by traditional client/server systems? And who would know more about this topic than Ranadive, the founder and CEO of TIBCO?
Unfortunately this book does not deliver. The examples are shallow, explaining a little but not to a deep enough level to communicate more than superficialities. And the text between the example is repetitive: too much breathless ad copy and not enough content.

This book needs a proofreader!

Do not use this book without an Engineering or Architecture professor to help you through the errors within. The book is full of errors of continuity, strange/bad math, and inconsistency. The errors are so numerous, that it makes you wonder if you can trust any of the formulas to be accurate. For example: a sample problem in beam design gives the formula to use (from a table), defines the variables, gives the values for the known variables; and then in the problem-solving steps, uses different values for the known variables than what was listed in the preceding "Given" section! Furthermore, the answer arrived at cannot be made by the equation provided! There are also errors where a formula is listed in tables and that formula is referred to later and used for a problem, but the formula is not exactly the same as the table; there is no explanation for the difference.
I recommend "Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders" (Ambrose/Tierney), instead.
