Review
Wells (professor emeritus, aviation, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) and Rodrigues (applied aviation science, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) have added new material on today's ground and air security concerns, changes in systems and regulations, and new maintenance and flight technologies to this fourth edition of a text for students, especially those with a limited background in the subject, enrolled in aviation safety and/or management programs and college or university flight programs. With the introduction of coauthor Rodrigues, the book broadens its field of study to include regulatory information on OSHA, EPA, and TSA. (Sci-Tech Book News 2004-06-01)

COMMERCIAL AVIATION'S SOURCE OF SAFETY INFORMATION

Rapidly increasing air traffic around the globe, soaring numbers of passengers, security concerns on the ground and in the air, changes in the Air Traffic System, new maintenance and flight technologies, recent accidents, and intensified media focus--all point up the need for greater attention to commercial aviation safety in the third millennium. Built upon the 5-M model--Man, Machine, Medium, Mission, and Management--this text by aviation author Alexander T. Wells integrates the latest research on human factors, technologies, systems, operations, and management strategies into the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and systematic reference on commercial aviation safety in the world. Ideal for students and professionals alike, this third edition of Commercial Aviation Safety covers:

*The latest commercial aviation accident statistics and data, with tabular breakdowns and critical analyses

*Contributions of the regulatory structure to safety including recent NTSB safety initiatives and FAA rules

*Security changes and directions

*Developments (and anticipated developments) in safety-related technologies--in air traffic control, maintenance, on-board instrumentation, and more

* Key safety factors in the interface between maintenance and flight operations

* The role of airline management in organizing for safety

* Significant ways of measuring air transportation safety

* NTSB investigations through 1999, with a copy of the new NTSB aircraft accident form for review and analysis

Generally Good, Though Occasionally Off Track
By Robert I. Hedges
"Commercial Aviation Safety" is a great introductory text for students wanting exposure to most safety considerations in aviation. The book is a well-organized survey, although I only award it four stars because the authors frequently get off-topic into areas only tangentially related to aviation safety.

The book opens with a discussion of the aviation regulatory and historical framework. This goes rapidly astray, with discussions of everything from the 1978 lead standard to the 1989 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER), which deals with toxic spill cleanup. Both of these could be tied to aviation safety, but the numerous citations of this nature serve to dilute the import of more important and common aviation safety programs.

Chapter two is a good overview of rulemaking processes, and I agree with the authors that the current FAA rulemaking process is far to labyrinthine at 217 steps long. Unfortunately, chapter two gets into a protracted discussion of OSHA related topics including quagmires like the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement and Fairness Act (SBREFA) which are not especially germane to aviation. Chapter three is a good introduction to the NTSB.

Chapter four is on "Recording and Reporting Safety Data" and is one of the key chapters in the book. The authors make excellent points about accidents and incidents as precursors to accidents (page 75). I was amazed to find that the FAA has 280 separate data collection systems. Clearly a database management system would be of great help to the government. On page 84 the authors have written a great explanation of Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) and the Air Transport Oversight System (ATOS). Anyone interested in this field needs a good working knowledge of these two components. The authors once again (page 92) make the excellent point that nonaccident safety data is vital in identifying and estimating the magnitude of safety problems. Chapter four, unfortunately, closes off course with a discussion of chemical spill reporting requirements. This is only applicable to extremely specialized professionals and is not readily of interest to readers of a survey on aviation safety. (This, for instance, is the closing line of the chapter: "RCRA listed hazardous wastes (F, K, P, U) under 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart D, and characteristic wastes (I, C, R, TC) under 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart C, are reportable if the release equals or exceeds the designated RQ.")

Chapter five is an overview of safety statistics, and pages 102-103 contain an excellent discussion of the utility and interpretation of accident rates and their use as indicators of risk trends. Beginning in chapter five, though, the pro-Boeing bias of the authors becomes readily apparent. Many safety advances are attributed to Boeing when they were actually introduced first or done better by another manufacturer. Chapter five also contains a summary of accident statistics that is useful, although monotonously written.

Chapter six deals with accident causation modeling, and introduces several models including the 5-M model (page 145.) It also contains good discussions of risk management (page 151) and human performance factors (page 160.)

Chapter seven starts with (page 163) an excellent discussion of the management of error, which is becoming more important in aviation today. It goes astray on page 164, though, with an inaccurate Boeing versus Airbus example in which Boeing is seen as the champion for simplicity and Airbus for complexity. The authors then get into an example of fuel system design. Anyone who has flown the B-747-400 and the newer Airbus products (A-320 and subsequent) can refute the assertion that Boeing is simpler. The 747-400 has the most nightmarish fuel system I have ever been exposed to, whereas the Airbus fuel system is very simple to operate. Even the "simpler" Boeings like the 757 and 767 have more fuel-related operational limitations and user knowledge requirements than a newer Airbus. My point here isn't to denigrate Boeing, but to point out that some of the examples in the book are perhaps skewed by personal knowledge or bias. Page 170 has an interesting comparison of 757/767 versus A-320 envelope protection. It is generally well balanced and technically correct, but their conclusion about windshear escape maneuvers is not justified: many simulator studies have now been carried out comparing the Boeing and Airbus escape profiles, and in all that I am aware of the Airbus full aft stick recovery provided greater ground clearance in identical conditions. I am unsurprised that the B-777 is cited for the electronic checklist (ECL) as a safety improvement, although all Airbus aircraft since the A-310 have had excellent ECAM automatic normal and abnormal checklists.

The remainder of the book is an overview of Air Traffic Control (although the authors contend that Free Flight is alive, most think it's DOA), and airline specific information, which is generally good. The book credits the 737 with starting the two-pilot cockpit, while actually the DC-9 flew much earlier. The Flight Control Computer (FCC) discussion of page 248 discusses the advances in modern FCCs, though fails to mention that the architecture being described is exclusive to Airbus. Once again the chapter deteriorates at the end with a discussion of 29 CFR 1910.215, Abrasive Wheel Machinery (pedestal grinders and other grinding wheels), and a discussion of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z.

Security is well covered in Chapter 11, although perhaps the discussion of nuclear quadrupole resonance technology, and the Body Orifice Security Scanner (BOSS) are more rooted in minutia than is needed in a text of this nature.

Chapter 12 concerns airline safety programs, and discusses employee selection. Particularly excellent is the discussion of requirements for a Safety Director (page 352). The discussion of Internal Evaluation Programs (page 346) is also superior.

This book is a great resource. The material within it would rate five stars if it weren't for the fairly constant introduction of material only tangentially relevant to aviation safety. I recommend this book for any aviation student or professional.

Informative Book
By Elijah Chingosho
"Commercial Aviation Security" is a comprehensive book on various safety and security aspects of commercial aviation. The wide range of topics covered include aviation law and regulations, the FAA Rule Making process, recording and reporting safety data, safety statistics, model of accident causation, risk assessment and management, air traffic management and control issues, aviation security, among other things.

The book is well written, well presented and easy to follow and understand. Those people involved with commercial aviation safety, operations and security will find this a valuable, helpful and handy reference book.

Full of Info, but Not Flashy
By Richard J. Gould
This is required reading by many Embry-Riddle Aviation Safety teachers.

It is broad in scope and recent, regarding coverage of the latest technology and events. It is not just a reprint of an out-of-date textbook with a new cover and a little new stuff thrown in, although I have not read the previous edition. I was surpised to see references to recent events and new technology that is barely being used. With the industry moving as fast as it is, I believe this is the book's strength. (Copyright is 2004) 5 of 5 stars for information.

Sure it may be dry, but it's a textbook. I haven't read too many textbooks that were written in a lively manner. Personally, I want information, not a entertainment or an agenda.

I particularly like that there is very little 'word fluff'. The writing is concise and straight-to-the-point, without excessive writing or stories to try to make a point. It encompasses a very wide range of Aviation Safety topics that one would need to know for general knowledge of the subject.

For a typical expensive textbook, I was surprised that there are NO pictures, and the book is printed on cheap 'copier paper' rather than fancy glossy paper. Otherwise, the binding and cover is rugged and secure. The absence of color or pictures, or fancy paper doesn't detract from the information which is top-notch. 3 of 5 stars for appearance and quality.

If you want fancy, get something else. If you want concise, up-to-date information, get this!

Not bad, but not essential
By Vilbs
Unlike the step 1 First Aid book, which was simply phenomenal (not to mention vital) for studying for the exam, the First Aid for Step II CK was a so/so text. It's fairly long, and wasn't as concise or as targeted as the step I book, and took more time to really study it and attain the same degree of comfort that I had after reading the first one. Some of this could be accounted for by the sheer scope of the examination itself. Not only does this cover all of the core specialty rotations (and a fair amount of subspecialty info as well) that you will be exposed to as a 3rd year clinical clerk, but it also needs to re-cover a good portion of the step I material that has been delightfully repackaged (i.e. those yummy glycogen storage diseases that you thought were gone forever.... think again! This time, they give you the vague clinical presentation, and then ask about the enzyme).

Within my class, there were really 3 groups of studiers for the step II, and the texts they used (as opposed to those who decided to "wing it"). Some loved this text, some thought that "Step Up" was hands down the best, and some swore by "Crush Step II". Personally... I read this one and "Crush", and thought that "Crush" was a tad more on target and high yield... but I also read this book first, so I may have hit Crush more comfortable in general. No matter what you choose, read something, and preferably more than 1 something, as a single text probably isn't going to be enough. Secondly, and probably more importantly, do practice questions! Whether it's USMLE world, or Kaplan's Qbank, it's definitely the best way to prepare for the exam. The test itself is very long (8 hours), and by the 3/4 point you'll probably be blinking stupidly, drooling, and struggling to remember what to do first.. point.. or click? The more practice you have, the better prepared you'll be, and really... everybody seems to make it through ok. Do the prep work, and you'll be just fine, and the "First Aid: Step II CK" is as good a place as any to start.

Probably the best Step 2 CK review book, but only 3.5 stars in my opinion
By Pete
If you have been on any forum or talked to other med students regarding Step 2 CK the inevitable line is: MTB2/3 for review and Uworld for questions.

But there are better resources out there.

Lets get one thing out of the way first: Step 2 CK success comes from the resources and studying you did in your clinical rotations, how well you did in Step 1, and from Uworld questions and their explanations. The review book is much less relevant here than in Step 1. Importantly, however, a review book organizes your thinking and provides a single location for all the high yield facts.

First Aid for Step 2 is a good source. Not a great source. But compared to the classical Mastering the Boards combo it is leagues better. It actually covers topics in reasonable detail, especially IM topics, that MTB seems to shallowly skim over. While it is not as easy of a read, it is also not utterly worthless. MTB is made for people who just don't remember the disease. FA is made for people who dont remember specifics in pathophys and basic treatments of disease. In short FA is more detailed which makes it harder to finish but more useful if you actually plan on using a review book.

It is not perfect at all however. The pediatric section, while just as good as other review books, is horribly inadequate such that I annotated (from Uworld) to the point of wiping out all the margins in several pages in that book. The cardiology section does not have treatments for various arrhythmias nor talks about clinical decision making in such primary care topics as hyperlipidemia (the section is in the book, but the indicates for moderate vs high dose statins is not). The Gyn/OB chapters are passable but things like vaccinations to be given in pregnancy are not discussed, while other topics like screening for cervical cancer are presented as a wall of text rather than a flow chart.

Other topics are covered with more or less decent consistency. But oddly some topics will mention a disease but never mention the treatment or next best step which is unbelievably frustrating for a test which asks 90% of the time what the next best step (not the pathophys) is. Again this problem is glaring in the peds section.

The psych section was no better than the Step 1 version and even didn't include the ego defenses. It did have a bereavement vs depression table which is a high yield point for sure.

No surgery chapter. Sure some of the topics is under the header of "assorted topics in EM" but that is just silly considering it is a fundamental rotation.

In conclusion the book is good. Not great. If some sections were beefed up and the topics were covered more concisely and ALWAYS including treatment, then we are golden. If you plan on using a review book for Step 2 use this one. If you still prefer MTB 2/3 because it is an easier read then you are better off just doing questions.

Not as good as First Aid for Step 1
By Jarrod D. Knudson
I was very disappointed with this resource for CK prep. I found Step 2 secrets to be far superior. I purchased and read First Aid for Step 2 CK based on my positive experience with First Aid for Step 1. Much to my disappointment, First Aid for CK contained quite a large amount of basic information that just isn't high yield on step 2. For example, the basic ins and outs of ECG. On the exam, pertinent ECG findings are usually given, and then you're asked to make a clinical decision (e.g. next test or step in management) based on the ECG findings and other data presented. Step 2 secrets is a much more clinically oriented review of material for CK. WARNING: don't rely heavily on First Aid for CK or you'll be disappointed. USMLE world and Kaplan Qbank are probably the best review resources out there, with review books serving as supplements. Unfortunately, First Aid for Step 2 CK was not very helpful. See my review of step 2 secrets, as I consider it to be the best text resource (remember, only as a supplement to online question banks) for CK. I'm not bashing the First Aid series because many are very good books. For example, First Aid for step 2 CS is right on the money (see my review of First Aid for step 2 CS).

The groundbreaking follow-up to the international bestsellera hands-on guide to putting McKinsey techniques to work in your organization

McKinsey & Company is the most respected and most secretive consulting firm in the world, and business readers just can't seem to get enough of all things McKinsey. Now, hot on the heels of his acclaimed international bestseller The McKinsey Way, Ethan Rasiel brings readers a powerful new guide to putting McKinsey concepts and skills into actionThe McKinsey Mind. While the first book used case studies and anecdotes from former and current McKinseyites to describe how "the firm" solves the thorniest business problems of their A-list clients, The McKinsey Mind goes a giant step further. It explains, step-by-step, how to use McKinsey tools, techniques and strategies to solve an array of core business problems and to make any business venture more successful.

Designed to work as a stand-alone guide or together with The McKinsey Way, The McKinsey Mind follows the same critically acclaimed style and format as its predecessor. In this book authors Rasiel and Friga expand upon the lessons found in The McKinsey Way with real-world examples, parables, and easy-to-do exercises designed to get readers up and running.

The First Step-by-Step Manual for Achieving McKinsey-Style Solutionsand Success

International bestseller The McKinsey Way provided a through-the-keyhole look at McKinsey & Co., history's most prestigious consulting firm. Now, the follow-up implementation manual, The McKinsey Mind, reveals the hands-on secrets behind the powerhouse firm's successand discusses how executives from any field or industry can use those tactics to be more proactive and successful in their day-to-day decision-making.

Structured around interviews and frontline anecdotes from former McKinsey consultantsas well as the authors, themselves McKinsey alumniThe McKinsey Mind explores how McKinsey tools and techniques can be applied to virtually any business problem in any setting. Immensely valuable in today's crisis-a-minute workplace, it discusses:

  • Techniques for framing problems and designing analyses
  • Methods for interpreting results and presenting solutions
  • Keys for managing teams, managing clients, and managing yourself

The ability to think in a rigorous, structured mannera McKinsey manneris not a birthright. It can, however, be a learned behavior. Let The McKinsey Mind show you how to approach and solve problems with the skill of a McKinsey consultant and obtain the positive results that have been delivered to McKinsey clients for over a century.

McKinsey & Co. is renowned throughout the world for its ability to arrive at sharp, insightful analyses of its clients' situations then provide solutions that are as ingenious as they are effective. McKinsey succeeds almost as well as shielding its revolutionary methods from competitors' scrutiny.

Now, The McKinsey Mind pulls back the curtain to reveal the ways in which McKinsey consultants consistently deliver their magic and how those methods can be used to achieve exceptional results in companies from 10 employees to 10,000. Packed with insights and brainstorming exercises for establishing the McKinsey mind-set, this book is an in-depth guidebook for applying McKinsey methods in any industry and organizational environment.

Taking a step-by-step approach, The McKinsey Mind looks at the McKinsey mystique from every angle. Owners, executives, consultants, and team leaders can look to this comprehensive treatment for ways to:

  • Follow McKinsey's MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) line of attack
  • Frame business problems to make them susceptible to rigorous fact-based analysis
  • Use the same fact-based analysisin conjunction with gut instinctto make strategic decisions
  • Conduct meaningful interviews and effectively summarize the content of those interviews
  • Analyze the data to find out the "so what"
  • Clearly communicate fact-based solutions to all pertinent decision makers
  • Capture and manage the knowledge in any organization to maximize its value

Because organizational problems rarely exist in a vacuum, The McKinsey Mind discusses these approaches and more to help you arrive at usable and sensible solutions. It goes straight to the sourceformer McKinsey consultants now in leadership positions in organizations throughout the worldto give you today's only implementation-based, solution-driven look at the celebrated McKinsey problem-solving method.

"The McKinsey Mind provides a fascinating peek at the tools, practices, and philosophies that have helped this much-admired firm develop generations of bright young MBAs into trusted corporate advisors. But the book's practical, down-to-earth advice is not just for consultants. The disciplined way in which McKinsey consultants frame issues, analyze problems, and present solutions offers valuable lessons for any practicing or aspiring manager."
Christopher A. Bartlett, Daewoo Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

"McKinsey and Co. rescues the biggest companies from disaster by addressing every problem with its own mixture of logic-driven, hypothesis-tested analysis. The McKinsey Mind helps everyone learn how to think with the same discipline and devotion to creating business success. According to the maxim, giving a man a fish may feed him for a day, but teaching him to fish will feed him for a lifetime. Paying McKinsey to solve your problem may help you for a day, but learning how they do it should help you for a lifetime."
Peter Wayner, Author of Free For All: How Linux and the Free Software Movement Undercut The High-Tech Titans

"The McKinsey Mind unlocks the techniques of the world's preeminent consulting firm and presents them in a format that is easy to understand and even easier to implement."
Dan Nagy, Associate Dean, The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University

Boring reiteration
By Yitch
This is a boring reiteration of the Mckinsey Way. I am now moving onto the third book in the series. The beginning seems promising.

If you are contemplating buying this book, my advice: don't

unless:
1. You are pedantic and must have a complete collection
2. You like wasting money

I honestly do not see the value in this. Mckinsey way was ok, this is just a high end photocopy.

Not Much Here
By J. M Schwartz
Not very useful if you are looking to improve your business. Would appreciate a deeper evaluation and more robust case studies. Seems as if authoer is using re-treads of basic McKinsey axioms over and over again. The 80/20 rule...seriously? This is not worth buying the book.

More of the same!
By A Customer
Nothing new in the book.
This book is very similar to the first (the McKinsey Way) - more fluff and nothing concrete. Ah! "structure your study", "gather data and interpret it correctly" , ... come on.. anybody knows that! How else does one come to conclusions (other than fact based, structured reasoning). If you have read the contents page you have read the book! (This may sound harsh, but seriously its true!)
The authors themselves mention the fact that they cannot detail McKinsey's techniques and go on to detail their own methodology "BASED" on the McKinsey methodologies. We don't need teasers and brand leveraged superficial mumbo-jumbo. Facts - these guys need to walk their talk! (Read the "About Confidentiality" section in the "Introduction" chapter).
Not recommended!

"This book is the one to buy if you are interested in collecting antique outboard motors."--Boating

The only complete guide to finding and identifying vintage outboard engines

Antique outboard motors have a mystique much like vintage cars, and they're much more affordable. Plus, once restored, they can be put to good use again, providing power for putt-putting around, fishing, waterskiing, or even racing.

The Old Outboard Book tells the story of the outboard motor, from the earliest days near the end of the nineteenth century through the dawn of the modern outboard era in the 1960s. Virtually every outboard motor ever built is here: Caille, Champion, Evinrude, Flambeau, Johnson, Martin, Mercury, Scott-Atwater, Waterwitch--the Big List chapter covers them all. The book also includes comprehensive oil-mix and spark plug charts for most old outboards.

The third edition of Peter Hunn's classic continues the story of the outboard motor, extending the coverage of U.S. and Canadian motors up to the mid-1970s and adding motors from Australia and Great Britain. In addition, the pricing and rarity guide and the complete model-year list have been updated.

If you're a buff of old outboard motors, you need this book.

"Love old outboard motors? Check out The Old Outboard Book."--Motor Boating & Sailing

"Incredible amount of detail about all those kickers from the past."--WoodenBoat

How to Think Like Benjamin Graham and Invest Like Warren Buffett, by Lawrence Cunningham

This text provides advice on how to value a business and how to think about markets and market prices. It aims to help develop a mind-set that will be the foundation to successful investing, and looks at how the reader can analyze businesses and make wise investment choices. The author reveals three things an investor needs to get from financial statements, illustrating how managers play games with numbers, oftern to the detriment of the investor. Lawrence Cunningham argues that an essential element of intelligent investing is a common-sense ability to assess the trustworthiness of corporate managers, and gives readers the tools to find business managers who are trustworthy. The book also provides valuation examples from some top companies: GE, Amazon, Microsoft and Disney.

A Commonsense Investing Approach that Combines 21st Century Technology with the Market-Proven Strategies of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett

Selected by JP Morgan as a Top 10 "Must Read"

"Earnings and cash flows are... the critical link in the investment chain, and Larry Cunningham's book forges it with heat, power, and persuasiveness."

John Bogle, Founder, The Vanguard Group

"A much-needed work on a unique style of investing, this book puts the ABCs of common sense valuation back into the business of investing. This is the place to look for insight and guidance in the age of volatile markets and colliding ideas."

Alan C. Greenberg

Chairman, Bear Stearns

"Anyone desiring to be a successful investor should read this excellent book presenting the important investing principles of Graham, Buffett, Fisher, and others in a most insightful and understandable manner."

David J. Gottesman

Chairman, First Manhattan

"Remarkably timely. For stock players who realize they played the greatest fool in the Internet stock game, Cunningham offers a tool for rehabilitation: a guide to thoughtful investing. For earnest investors, he shows how to live profitably with the moodiness of Mr. Market."

David Henry

Columnist, USA Today

"While the stock market does not always behave rationally, Larry Cunningham's well-articulated and insightful views as to value investing are a refreshing reminder that, just as night follows day, a return to the principles at the core of Cunningham's common sense approach to investing is inevitable."

Samuel J. Heyman

Chairman of the Board and CEO, GAF Corporation

"Lawrence Cunningham explains, then debunks, most of today's acronyms, buzz words, and pop investing concepts. He gets down to the fundamentals that investors must know about companies in order to choose reliable winners in the stock market."

Janet Lowe

Author, Benjamin Graham on Value Investing and Warren Buffett Speaks

"Following the herd may seem rational and intelligentuntil it stampedes straight off the cliff."

From Chapter 1

Lawrence Cunningham possesses one of today's clearest, most distinct voices on the inherent irrationality of investors and the stock market. Renowned for his no-nonsense style and straightforward approach, he is also renowned for telling independent investorsbetter than any other market observerhow and where to find uncommon values in virtually any market environment.

In How to Think Like Benjamin Graham and Invest Like Warren Buffett, Cunningham returns to the basicsby returning to the two legends who established, and then refined, those basics. He shatters many of today's common investing myths, replacing them with the facts and tools needed to thoroughly analyze the investment value of any business.

This remarkable book illustrates how forces that are unique to today's marketincluding electronic day trading, an overvalued IPO market, and computer-based stock exchangesare leading to an increasingly wide gap between price and value. It then convincingly explains how to close that gap, and find underpriced stocks poised to recover their value, by using the business analysis approaches and insights of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett.

In a sophisticated but readable style, How to Think Like Benjamin Graham and Invest Like Warren Buffett discusses how to understand and apply the time-proven tenets of value investing:

How to value a businesswith valuation examples from top companies including GE, Microsoft, Amazon.com, and others

How to rate business managersa key to finding quality long-term investments

How to know when management is playing with numbersand understand the games they play

Unlike any financial book you have ever read, How to Think Like Benjamin Graham and Invest Like Warren Buffett wraps a lifetime of investing wisdom into one compelling, insightful, and highly accessible package. An intelligent guide to accurately analyzing and realistically valuing investment targets, it will tell you what questions to ask, what answers to expect, and how to approach every stock as an experienced, skeptical, and commonsense business analyst.

Disappointing
By Frederik Vanhaverbeke
I believe that this book might be interesting for someone who is unfamiliar with value investing, but I must warn the more experienced reader that not much of new ideas are to found in this book. What surprises me most of all is that the author devotes the first half of his book to convincing people that marekts are inefficient. But what guy believing in efficient markets would ever consider buying a book on investing in the first place ? Right: anyone interested in this book can skip the first half. The second half is rather superficial and brings nothing new on the table for people familiar with value investing. My advice: avoid this book and buy instead 'The essays of Warren Buffet' of the same author. The latter is really a must-read for anyone serious about investing !

Stick to the Basics
By A Customer
This book seemed put together in a hurry. Many examples were poor and some were wrong. I didn't come away learning anything new. Save your money for Cunningham's summary of Buffett's letters, or Graham, or Fisher.

Great Distillation and Updating of Graham and Buffett
By Donald Mitchell
Although the definitive popular book on Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett remains to be written, this excellent work is certainly the state-of-the-art in this area. For those who do not have the time or inclination to read the writings and speeches of these important investment thinkers, you get the key kernels of wisdom in action-oriented doses here. This is the first book I have read that gives the stock investor who wants to outperform the market averages a sense of what is involved in order to have a chance. The examples of how to apply these methods to companies like General Electric, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and internet retailers are very helpful. I thought this book was much more valuable in every way than Buffettology.
Both Graham and Buffett see buying stock as being the same as buying a whole company. The analytical methods involved are similar to those used by companies thinking about making an acquisition, except there is no need to consider what the joint operating benefits of the companies will be. The strength of this approach to stock investing is that if stock values for a company fall too low another company or group of cash-flow-oriented investors will acquire the whole company. In the long run, stocks should not fall too far below their intrinsic value (a Graham concept) as cash flow generators.
The book is organized into three sections. The first looks at whether the stock market is efficient or not. If it is, you cannot beat it. If it is not, you can beat it by investing where it is not efficient. The evidence here summarized estimates that the stock market is at least 20 percent inefficient and becoming more so. I am aware of a number of studies showing other kinds of inefficiency that Professor Cunningham does not cite. My own personal view is that the stock market is not very efficient at all, but is relatively predictable within a band of probability.
A particular strength of this section is in creating a summary of many of the arguments for stock market efficiency and inefficiency. Trust me. Unless you really love reading this kind of research (which I happen to), you will be better off reading the summaries here rather than the originals.
The second section discusses how to outperform the stock market. The best part of this section is an extremely well done parable about a man who wants to sell his apple tree. He is approached by many different types of potential purchasers, and they offer wildly varying prices. You get the interior logic of how each price is arrived at in a way that allows you to see the fundamental weaknesses and strengths of each approach. Nicely done!
The heart of this section emphasizes the familiar Graham and/or Buffett (their philosophies do not coincide, but rather partially overlap) concepts of sticking to what you know well, having a margin of safety, and doing your homework. I particularly liked the detailed description of how to determine where you have a knowledge edge that allows you to potentially have an advantage as a stock investor. The cautions against overestimating what you know are very well done.
The third section looks at the role of company management and boards of directors. It debunks a lot of the popular thinking about the importance of good governance. As Warren Buffett often emphasizes in his annual letters to shareholders, you should invest only with people you "like, trust, and admire." A CEO with a weakness (particularly a lack of integrity) can quickly tank your investment before you can do anything about it. Certainly, I have been sorry a number of times when I have not followed that rule. I certainly subscribe to it now. Every management will make mistakes. Only highly focused and capable ones will notice that they have and work on rectifying the errors rather than trying to explain why there really is no problem.
If you read this book carefully, it will convince you that outperforming the stock market is a pretty hard thing to do unless you have a great deal of knowledge about public companies and unusually good access to company managements. I think describing what needs to be done is the most eloquent argument that I have seen for why the average investor should be in indexed mutual funds for the stock portion of her or his portfolio. I suggest you already read John Bogle's Common Sense on Mutual Funds. I was pleased to see that this book raises an important question of valuation for when to commit to new purchases of indexed funds. People differ on this subject; but while the S&P 500's multiple is as high as sit is now and cash flow growth is so weak, many people may benefit from holding off or buying other indexes instead. Consider the small cap value indexes instead now, for instance.
I suspect that you can learn a lot by comparing your past stock investing with the patterns described here. Are you a great investor? Great investors have "independence of thought, . . . [and] utter and profound common sense . . . ." The challenge here is that "common sense is . . . it is so uncommon." On the other hand, "those who buy stocks outside their circle of competence are gamblers, speculators, or fools." Please wear the shoe that fits you.
The most accurate prediction of future stock market conditions is that they will fluctuate. Currently, the average stock varies by 50 percent in price each year. What method of stock investing will allow you to either ignore or best take advantage of that volatility? Be sure to consider your emotions at least as much as your intellect and available time in making this determination.
Get a great return on your time and on your investments!

Great Insights Into Getting Meetings With Decision Makers
By Donald Mitchell
Most salespeople know just what to do when they get in front of a decision maker who has a need. But most salespeople spend too little time with new decision makers. The salespeople either put too little effort into prospecting, or stay focused on cold leads much too long. Stephan Schiffman takes dead aim at that problem and provides ways to motivate you to take an more energetic approach, to implement a system to help you get there, and to keep you perservering until results occur.
Although there was much good advice in the book, I thought that his descriptions of the psychology of exploring over the telephone setting up a face-to-face meeting was masterful. The book deserves five stars for that section alone!
Basically, he wants you to realize that every objection to having a meeting that you will ever get will come in one of only about a dozen forms. If you think about these objections, you can create a response for each that leads naturally back to your question, 'Are you free to meet with me at 2 p.m. on Wednesday?' He provides a number of useful examples that he uses in his training business to help stimulate your imagination.
I also thought that his advice to leave voice mails where you offer to tell the prospect something important about a well-known company (that happens to be your customer and has agreed to be a reference) is likely to make it easier to make the initial telephone contact.
Depending on the type of customer you deal with, you may need to soften or harden the method he describes, but the basic concept of being focused on getting the meeting first is a very good one. By asking people to commit to action, you tell whether you are creating a live relationship or not. If not, ask 'why not?' and learn something. The book basically turns what most think of as rejection into progress. I thought that was a great way to turn around stalled thinking about selling.
After you have finished the book, ask yourself what other requirements you have in order to make progress in what is important to you. Then consider whether you are making enough progress in those areas. If not, create a system and set of self-motivations to assist you in implementing that system. You should be able to make vastly more progress as a result.
