And when Air Force officials visited Boeing, they came to discuss production plans for the B-50 and to check progress on the new B-54, a compound engined bomber based on the B-29 and B-50. These were the planes--not that impractical B-47--that everyone expected to succeed the bombers then in use. People regarded the B-47 as an oddball, an experiment. They did not see it as we do today, as the forebear of almost every plane in the sky. Finally an Air Force general was persuaded to take a look and a test ride. He was suitably impressed by the plane's breathtaking speed and performance, not to mention looks. Pilots of the time reported that their first reaction to the plane was, "I wanna fly it!" The first B-47 one pilot saw sported whitewall tires. Another pilot commented, “It reminded me of sheer speed. Even when it was sitting still it looked as if it were going 100 mph." By the end of 1948, the Air Force had contracted for 10 B-47s, still far fewer than the number of conventional bombers it had on order. But the B-47 would not be denied. And the brilliance of its performance could not be denied. America's "top gun," leading military test pilot Chuck Yeager was sent to follow one B-47 to clock its speed. "I can't keep up," he radioed the jubilant B-47's civilian pilot. Journeying from Moses Lake AFB, Washington to Andrews AFB near Washington D.C. for a demonstration flight the next day, the XB-47 scorched across the country at an average of 609.8 mph, unintentionally setting a new speed record in the process. So fast that a parachute was used to help slow it down at landing, the B-47 also soon decimated the trans-Atlantic speed record. Maneuverable as well as fast, this little-noticed aircraft soon won the Air Force's devotion, going on to become the linchpin of the Strategic Air Command, and the first line of defense against the threat of Soviet atomic attack. A rare find in historical aviation literature

In the 1950's when the B-47 reigned supreme as the primary tool of the Strategic Air Command, my father was an Air Force pilot stationed at Eglin AFB in Florida. Anytime I observed high altitude contrails, they were generated only by the B-47. This precious book is the only history in existence describing the design, flight testing, and R and D improvements to the aircraft, and, very critically, what the pilots who flew it thought about it and how they transitioned from propeller aircraft to this very revolutionary jet bomber. A fascinating book. A great read. With a lot of the history about brilliant USAF test pilot Guy M. Townsend who was much later a neighbor of ours at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio. I doubt that many copies of this book exist. If this unique type of history appeals to you, you will be very pleased that you own it.

I enjoyed this book - Kindle Edition

I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in aviation history. It explains for the enthusiast many aspects of the development and operational uses of the B-47. This airplane was the United States' nuclear deterrent throughout the 1950s and early '60s. The B-47 also served as a sophisticated probe of the Soviets' air defenses. The bomber, recon, and other variants are all here, along with abundant historical photos and diagrams.

The Kindle edition that I read on the Kindle Fire HD) was a little quirky. The text looked like it was a scanned image, especially the bold, extended quotations. However, the text behaved just like any other Kindle text. This was a little odd, but did not really detract from my enjoyment of the book. Also, some of the pictures and text seemed to be out of order, but this may be a problem with the original book, and not a Kindle formatting problem.

Another Walter Boyne Success

If you have any real interest in the Strategic Air Command this is the aircraft that you really need to be up on. This was the work horse of S.A.C. before the B-52 and during those formattive years of the Cold War. More dependable than ICBM's and a main stay of General Lemays MADD projects, this aircraft was an often an overlooked jewel in Boeing Aircrafts history of ground breaking designs. Used for everything from Recon work to penetration bombing this aircraft developed the tactics that the B-52 was later to take credit for. The Stratojet is a difficult aircraft to find information on and this book is a historians dream.

About the Author

A fantastic resource for model builders and historians!

This is a very (thick) detailed book on the construction of real historic clipper ships. It contains everything from lines to layout to fitting out details for many clipper ships built between 1850 and 1856. No pretty pictures, but lots of useful diagrams and drawings. An experienced shipwright could probably build a very good clipper ship from this complete reference.

Bill Crothers' excellent drawings and thorough research make this a definitive reference on the construction of the American clipper ships. The book contains a wide range of information of interest to the maritime historian as well as the model maker. This is a book about the "insides" of these vessels - how they were built and how they worked - rather than about the lovely appearance of the ships under sail.
Highly recommended for your reference shelf.

Good for CCS study

I purchased this text to study for the CCS exam to supplement my text I had from PT school (Frownfelter & Dean). A couple reviews have indicated this text is long-winded, which it is - but I appreciate that as I feel I learn more when everything is so thoroughly explained. Overal, I feel this is a fantastic text to grasp the core concepts of cardiopulmonary PT and has been integral in my studies towards my CCS. Highly recommend.

Good explanations, horrible answers

I have previously taken 4 years worth of Latin classes. With that in mind, I would say that this volume's a good revision, especially considering that it is an exercise book and not a textbook. I can't think off the top of my head any Latin exercise books save "For Dummies" and "Demystified". I've used both and they're not as numerous in terms of exercises, and if you're doing revision, not learning, then what you need is practice, not explanations. Some may get frustrated with the declension/conjugation order. There are minor errors in the explanation part. That's okay, it can easily be checked online or with any textbook.

With that said, the bad thing about this revision is that the exercises are horrendously erroneous when it comes to the answers in the back... so every time you catch an error, you have to double-check to see if it's you or the author who has made a mistake. Now to come and think of it, you may have to do that for every RIGHT answer, just to check if you're right and hence your answer coincides with the author, or if the author and you made the same mistake. It's a little annoying. There's also a mistake for the first declension nominative plural that made me pull out three other Latin textbooks just to check.

Unfortunately, this isn't Spanish, so you really have a limited selection of revision texts. Out of the ones floating out there and readily available that doesn't have to do with missals or breviaries, this probably is the best... out of approximately five, mind you. I suppose this is all due to just how many Latin students are out there today. But still, if McGraw-Hill is this sloppy with one text, it makes me wonder just what other errors I'd be seeing in the other books.

If you're going to buy this, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

A great supplementary text

I like this text. It uses the same order of cases as I use in some of my other grammars, namely, nominative, genitive, dative, accusative and ablative. It makes mention of the vocative case but doesn't include it everywhere to hinder our learning and memorisation. Why is case ordering so important? I believe our memories adapt to things we see. I don't think we should even LOOK at a declension with the nouns going in a different order to that which we're used to. Writing this reminds me of those police line-up cases in which the victim of crime begins to think that someone innocent in the line-up is the person who committed the crime, simply because our memories graft new input onto old experiences.

The other grammars I'd use this in association with are Moreland & Fleischer's Latin: An Intensive Course and John F. Collins' Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin.

A lot of drills, vocab and especially grammatical information have been condensed into a handy, readable volume.

As for errors, as mentioned by "a reader" subsequent reviewer, it would have actually been a "helpful review" if s/he'd actually told us exactly where the errors were.

Thoroughly recommended alongside your other Latin grammar (if you use the same case ordering).

Riddled with errors

Like other Schaum's Outlines books, this one contains hundreds of exercises that offer the reader continuous practice. However, in this case it is obvious that the editors failed to check the exercises and answers before publication. I made it to exercise 11 in chapter 1, where I hit the fourth error. In this case the answer key has a declension for a different noun than the one in the main text! As an unreliable answer key is fatal for self-study - particularly in an introductory text - I discarded this book and started reading another. Latin is difficult enough as it is: Slapdash editing is simply unacceptable.
A corrected version of this text might well be worthwhile for Latin students, but I strongly recommend against the purchase of this book until the book details clearly state that it is "corrected" or "revised". Schaum's Outlines ought to recall and destroy their stock immediately and reprint the book with corrections.

Good, practical advice for all new managers

I like the approach the author Morey Stettner takes with this book for new managers. As one would expect, it covers most of the topics a new manager would need - and they are handled in a clear and practical way that make it easy to absorb and apply. In addition to that, Stettner is a realist. He doesn't presume to "know it all" and that his suggestions will fit every new manager's style or needs. He asks new managers to try them out and adjust to suit. This is an unusual and unpretentious approach for a management "how to" book.

The book starts with asking the new manager to develop his or her personal credo by thinking about the qualities of good managers he/she has previously known or worked for. There's a practical exercise, "My favourite manager", that makes this task easy. Once again, the realistic approach comes into play with Stettner making sure that the new manager adjusts his/her ideal to account for their current organisational culture.

I particularly liked his advice on how to start one's first meeting with new staff to create that all important first impression. I also liked the chapter on "listening" which gives some excellent, practical tips such as the three step tactic of how to avoid becoming defensive - Patience-Ask-Confirm.

The many practical examples made it easy to see how the author's ideas might work in practice. However, it was a little frustrating when some chapters started with a case study to illustrate the problem, but did not finish the case with examples of how the manager solved the problem (I expected this to happen later in the chapter). I also found some examples a little dated (e.g. "type out your answers") and there was no mention of a 360 degree tool when discussing how the new manager might seek feedback.

I would have also liked to see more emphasis given to planning and running meetings. There was no mention of how to manage emails. For most new managers these two tasks take a lot of time and focus.

However, overall these are minor criticisms. It's nice to read a book written by a true professional who understands social psychology and how businesses work, but who doesn't need to elaborate or preach about either. It's just full of good, plain, workable advice. Highly recommended for any new manager.

But Morey Stettner's new book will give anyone freshly promoted to the ranks of management a valuable head start by spelling out practical steps that new managers can take to be effective. For all of you old-timers, reading this book will induce a near constant mental stream of "I wish someone had told me that when I was starting out." For example, Stettner's first step, writing out a basic plan of how you want to manage your subordinates, might at first seem a bit naïve to veterans. But consider this point: How much time did you spend thinking about the techniques you would use in managing people before taking over your first managerial assignment? The probable answer is not much. In a clear voice laced with illustrative examples, Stettner covers the critical skills managers rely on every day: speaking, listening, criticizing and disciplining. For his insightful treatment of these topics, we [...] recommend this book to managers new and old, employees and students of management - But then again, aren't we all?

perfect for middle schoolers

One of my students discovered this book and loved it. It's now on my "great reads" list--books that every student will enjoy. The book moves fast and is at just the right comprehension level, without skipping any of the science. Sally Ride is truly an inspiration. The cover's a little blah and the photos are black and white, which may put off some kids, but once they start reading, they won't stop.

Fails to keep its promise: Metric War + Compensation

This book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical,oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.
My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.
This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa,and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.
Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style,which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....

Kudos to S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne, management consultants who largely steer clear of their industry's usual empty catchphrases and superficial hype. Instead, their lucid explanation of the importance of shareholder value takes center stage. The heftiness of EVA and Value-Based Management may be daunting, but most readers will be satisfied with Part I's strategic overview. The concepts reappear in Part II accompanied by a wealth of technical details, calculations and case studies to help finance professionals with nitty-gritty implementation of EVA (Economic Value Added) programs. The book honestly assesses EVA's power to motivate managers, noting that some companies just are not well-suited for this performance metric. We from getAbstract prescribe this book to corporate executives who have overdosed on consultant jargon but still want to drive value growth in their companies, and to finance specialists who seek a comprehensive roadmap to EVA implementation.

Excellent book

As an author, speaker and consultant on these topics, I highly recommend this book. Not only have the authors discussed the pros and cons of a number of approaches thoughfully and concisely, they also expand the level of understanding related to the calculations in an accessible way. Their book discusses both implementation issues and the nitty gritty of the mechanics. In sum, the book takes the reader to the next level of understanding. I highly recommend this book.
