Just the plane facts!

I am new to general aviation and was looking for information about the different types of general aviation planes: what they look like, how they perform, and a ballpark estimate on how much they cost. (I'm not seriously planning to buy one (not yet anyway), but price is a useful piece of information). This book delivers all that.
The book could be improved by providing a few more photographs and by including a few more pieces of data for each plane (e.g., cruising range, ceiling, fuel consumption, Vmc, etc.). Another improvement would be to increase the information in the narratives for each type of plane, better describing flying quirks and typical problems for the purchasers (e.g., expensive ADs, commonly found damage, etc.); detailed narratives like those contained in the dated "Buying and owning your own airplane" by J. E. Ellis would be a benefit. With these few improvements, the book would be perfect.

A good book for comparing aircraft models

If your looking for one book to read before buying an airplane, then dont buy an airplane. You have to read EVERY book you can get your hands on plus lots of Trade a Planes, and spend a year or more looking before you buy a plane. When it comes to aircraft, you must know all you can about your purchase or it can break you. I know this because I am an Aircraft Mechanic.

This book does give you a basic knowledge of whats involved in buying a plane and basic data about each model shown. Unfortunatly books are never accruate price guides because values change quickly. They do give a prospective buyer lots to think about.

It is a great read for aviation buffs who want to compare different models of light singles and twins. I spent hours thumbing thru it. Would have liked color pictures but there is at least one picture and specifications for pretty much every production light aircraft.

A reasonable guide to an unreasonable decision

Owning a personal aircraft,except for a very few people in unusual circumstances, simply does not make economic sense. It's a toy and, invariably, an expensive one. However, for those who want to fly, it's the best toy in the world, a source of immense satisfaction.

Sadly, many people try to make what is invariably a purely emotional expenditure into a "sensible" one, and wind up spending almost as much money for a boring and unrewarding aircraft as they would have to go all the way and buy an airplane that will do what they really would like.
The General Aviation industry, obsessed with promoting its wares as rational business decisions, foundered at the very time the speedboat, exotic car, and expensive motorcycle (read: Harley-Davidson) businesses blossomed. The reason is that these business openly vended their wares for what they were: expensive toys. No one tried, as Cessna and Piper have for forty years, to get even the most gullible affluent buyer of Cigarette boats and Ferraris that they were buying anything but fun and snob appeal.
Personally, I find the wares of Wichita pretty deficient in the fun factor as compared to homebuilts and warbirds, and I'm not one of the few people with a legitimate business case-and there still are a (very) few-for owning a 310 or a Bonanza. But if you want to buy a certificated light aircraft, this book does offer a good insight into their respective strong and weak points and explains how the procedure of buying one is best managed. My main disagreement is with how the word "investment" is used with regard to aircraft not in revenue service. (If it isn't, it isn't an investment-and leaseback doesn't count.) If you want an investment, buy stocks, bonds or real estate-but, unless you're Southwest Airlines, never, ever an airplane.

Excellent book for learning more about managing multicultural organisations.

This is an excellent book for learning more about managing multicultural organisations. Already in its second edition after being first published in 1995, it has improved. The COM or Cultural Orientation Model integrates all the cultural dimensions of famous authors Hofstede, Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars, Stewart and Bennett/Rhinesmith, Kluckhohn and Strondtbeck/Hall and Edwart Hall into a cartwheel.

Though the authors are very much pro-convergence (even claiming in Chapter 1 that Global harmonization of consumer buying preferences will dominate certain industry-goods and services-sectors.) as to Globalization they manage to build up a comprehensive argument about the high role of culture in the process of organizational globalization.

Busy international managers could find the approach of breaking the complexities of cultural differences into value orientations a bit theoretical in the absence of case examples and critical incidents. There are some good case studies in chapter 4:A Survey of Cultural Patterns but there are too few of them in the whole book. In fact more of these would have helped in getting a vital point accross that cultural boundaries are not national boundaries. For people involved in designing performance management systems and strategic planning in multicultural organisations this book is highly recommended reading. Practical guide to understanding other culture

The book starts slowly and it has some useless information. It basically tries to convince the reader that understanding other cultures is important. Well, if I didn't think so, I wouldn't have bought the book in the first place.

Then, there is some generalities about business, wrapped up in a lot of business/MBA BS. But it gets better.

Then, they lay out a method of classifying cultures with several measures that do make sense. Then, there is a quick survey of several cultures. This section is extremely useful. I grew up in France but I have now lived in the US for 6 years. Their analysis is true, but it also puts a structure on the observations I made. Working with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean folks, I agree with their presentation.

Form inside or outside a culture, it helps understanding how you react, and how other people react. The book doesn't make value judgments on cultures peculiarities, just gives the information.

I would say it's a must read, especially when it is below 20 bucks. Just skip the beginning.

RANDALL NICHOLS is Vice President of Cryptography for TeleHubLink Corporation, where he directs development of embedded security solutions. He is Professor of Information Security at George Washington University and the author of four books on communications security, including McGraw-Hill's ICSA Guide to Cryptography.

PANOS LEKKAS is Chief Technology Officer and General Manager of Technology for TeleHubLink. Originally a VLSI designer, Mr. Lekkas worked for many years for IBM, where he was instrumental in the introduction of RISC architecture. Before joining TeleHubLink, he was President and CEO of wirelessEncryption.com, where he invented and developed telecom security.

Impressive work on a very hard-to-define subject!

The subject of security in the wireless field is a rather confusing one. It relies on an intricate web of multiple and tightly interweaved technical and scientific disciplines way beyond what the average Berkeley "kid" will ever dream to hack. One is usually not an expert in all of these areas. The field has therefore been and pretty much remains the domain of a few top-notch pros.
To master the subject however does not mean that one has suddenly come up with an all-encompassing solution or a magic checklist. It rather means that one has acquired a broad and dense set of knowledge from communications theory to cryptography and from electrical engineering to network design that will allow one to apply discernment as to what may go wrong in a project and what options there are to address the issues, what may work and what may not work and above all why. Before you cook you must know what a kitchen is and what utensils are needed for what purpose.
WIRELESS SECURITY is not a cookbook. It is a massive and scholary exposition of lots of inter-related material much of which cannot be easily found elsewhere and even that which can be found elsewhere will require time and money until one produces it on one's desk, like the material on stream ciphers, on voice processing, or on embedded end-to-end secure systems that transcend vocoders and network infrasrtuctures.
Besides themselves, the authors have put together an impressive list of individual contributors to this book that reads like a Who's Who list from the government military and intelligence communications field and this brings an extra aura of authority and competence to this book. Many books these days are written by a self-appointed expert, usually a fly-by-night quasi-consultant, whose academic credentials at best span an evening class at a local community college and whose major technical accomplishment is that they can safely....start a C-language compiler from the command line, yet they portray themselves as undisputed experts on a cutting-edge subject.
Well WIRELESS SECURITY is not one of those books. It is a heavy-duty impressive textbook that has been clearly written by professionals for readers with a broad thirst and a deep desire to understand the multiple dimensions of the problem of wireless security. It does not give answers to all your questions, in fact it will generate many more questions in your head, but it will help you form a clear idea of contexts, possibilities, ramifications and implications, and more importantly it will steer you to the right direction for subsequent research on a subject. Isn't that however what a good textbook is supposed to be all about?
The book makes the reader sensitive about issues that many people (even professionals) today are simply not even aware about. It covers lots and lots of material from many relevant and seemingly remote areas, spanning from cryptography and voice processing all the way to integrated systems design, and from high-power eavesdropping techniques in the era of CDMA to weaknesses in the set up of wireless LANs.
Of course, if one is looking for a crytography-fundamentals book there are others that are much better suited to the subject. Or if one is looking for a How-To-set-up-your-LAN-by-grilling-your-vendors type of book full of checklists, then this is not for you. There are several other books on certain aspects of wireless security in the market, that are much less scholarly, and certainly less pricey than this one.
If one however wants to take a thorough and comprehensive look over the field of Wireless Security at large, then there should be no doubt that THIS is and by far THE book on the subject. There are no subfields in the area that it does not cover and the authors manage to do it in a nicely flowing style that never becomes boring, no matter how esoteric the subject is.
It is extremely well documented with lots of references and useful footonotes. The care of the authors and their passion about the subject is manifest all over the book. The only small weakness of this book is it has some annoying typos in a couple of places (however nothing critical in terms of overall correctness of text) including some of the earlier figures. If it goes to a 2nd edition the publisher had better address these with a competent copy editor as they do injustice to an overall superb effort.
I am working in the area of advanced DSP-based wireless communications security and in short, I find this book very useful. I refer to it very often during my work. I strongly recommend WIRELESS SECURITY to anyone seriously interested in the subject.

You can find elsewhere any of the issues covered by this book. But only in this book, they are presented all together in detail. Every wireless security related field is discussed and the correspondent defensive and preventive countermeasures are proposed.

Even if they use the book mostly to learn about WLAN, WAP, WTLS, and Bluetooth security issues, many of them (the students) have been exploring the rest of the book to improve their knowledge. As far as I know, they use particularly: the cryptographic chapters to complement the regular (Dr. Stallings) textbook, and the Wireless Information Warfare chapter to improve their general background.

Extremely Useful!

I'm an active systems architect from Sweden working with multiple types of wireless communications devices(cellular, Bluetooth, etc.). I have been looking for a comprehensive coverage of security aspects in RF transmissions for quite some time. A colleague of mine recommended this book to me.
My first reaction was surprise due to the breadth of its coverage. It gives a well-rounded view of the subject in a very scholarly fashion. It is very meticulously written, clearly by people who know what they are talking about, and it includes some interesting issues like voice processing and cryptography without ever becoming boring. It provides a great deal of references so one can pursue further and deeper study of the subjects that one is interested in. Lots of footnotes and explanations show the authors' attention and care about detail.
My interest happens to be in implementing embedded integrated systems and this book provided me with ample food for thought with its original coverage of issues related to cipher synchronization in real-time wireless communications protocol stacks. To my knowledge, the subject is not covered anywhere else.
Besides a couple of typos probably due to the publisher's rush to bring the book to the market, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the area of wireless communications security.

Only if you want chat about trading

The book is really like a chat, it doesn't bring anything deep. It almost don't bring any chart or any new technical analysis, and even their system suggestion is week. For instance, when they explain how to use volume to pick a stock, they even doesn't show a volume chart.
What makes the book more frustating is the way it's written, one may feels that it's missing something or the author is hidden something. Moreover they put some stupid dialogs to ilustrate some situations...
The book really lacks substance!
Thus, buy this book only if you want waste your money and doesn't have anything better to read.

Some good strategies but needs to get updated

Momentum stock trading can be one of the fastest and most lucrative ways to make money in the market. This book has good strategies that can help you in your trading efforts but I think it needs to get updated for the benefit of the readers.

We as traders need to constantly keep reading and testing setups and strategies because that's the only way to stay sane and profitable in this business. Fortunatly the internet has some pretty good places where you can gather great information and keep updated with profitable techniques. When it comes to momentum trading the one thing that we need to keep in mind is that the market will present us with trading and investing opportunities all the time. Not all of them are good enough to consider or even look at. That's why it's vital to know what kind of setups and factors to look for before you enter the next trade.

Once you understand, test and master those setups and factors you can aspire to take advantage of hot stocks consistently either in premarket, market hours and after hours every week.

The ultimate thesis of this book is that, properly practiced, day trading can be a legitimate business or profession; but, practiced in a cavalier fashion, it can lead to financial ruin. Day trading requires a special type of personality and mentality. Additionally, in order to succeed in the "shark filled waters with other seasoned professional traders", the individual trader needs to be educated, equipped with the right tools, and develop his or her own disciplined approach. The author's purpose in writing the book is to teach the techniques and methods of successful trading.
The book reviews the basic concepts of the market, including the NYSE and Nasdaq, on-line trading, and how orders are routed. It discusses the tools of trading, including hardware and software; on-line chat rooms and their role in hyping stocks; and paper trading. The author describes "momentum" and its various sources, including institutions and on-line traders. Finally, he examines the specific methods, rules and mindsets that make up his market-tested model of "Trading on Momentum". The time of day one trades, sector strength, daytrader strength, and pre-market and after-hours trading are some of the elements that make up the model. The model yields fourteen "Golden Rules of Trading" that the author has developed over a number of years.
Thanks to the information revolution, we are constantly deluged with news and analysis about the financial markets. Wild swings in stock prices, conflicts-of-interest, hype and (sometimes) outright fraud seem to be the order of the day. The author does an excellent job of capturing this new environment, one that makes "buy and hold" an obsolete strategy.

Good book on order picking methods

This book quickly covers the most common methods and equipment used to receive, move, store, pick, and ship materials within a warehouse environment. Much of the book focuses on the order-picking process, which makes it a good choice for fulfillment operations. Of particular interest is the detailed info on slotting as well as an objective discussion of the pros and cons of automation. The size of the book (only 233 pages) results in somewhat brief treatments of the various topics. On the plus side, this makes it a quick read for someone wanting to become familiar with warehouse operations, on the minus side you may find that you need to go to another resource to get more detailed info on a specific topic.

Interesting overall view for beginners in warehousing. It has a superficial treatment on very critical issues such as receiving and putaway. Also it's so focused on order picking (the author's experience) that provides an unbalanced view of Distribution Centers. It doesn't address any type of raw material warehousing insights, it focused more on finished goods distribution centers. Limited applicability of the content.

Great overview of concepts

I found the book helpful in learning some basics of warehousing. I appreciated the overview of various types of equipment and racking. The book focuses more on distribution systems but I found many of the concepts can be applied to MRO warehousing(zoning and slotting in particular)with some tweaking.
