About the Author
George Tchobanoglous is a professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California at Davis. He received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of the Pacific, an M.S. degree in sanitary engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Stanford University. His principal research interests are in the areas of solid waste management, wastewater treatment, wastewater filtration, aquatic systems for wastewater treatment, and individual onsite treatment systems. He has taught courses on these subjects at UC Davis for the past 32 years. He has authored or co-authored over 350 technical publications including 12 textbooks and 3 reference books. He is the principal author of a textbook titled Solid Waste Management: Engineering Principles and Management Issues, published by McGraw-Hill. The textbooks are used in more than 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States, and they ate also used extensively by practicing engineers in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Tchobanoglous is an active member of numerous professional societies. He is a corecipient of the Gordon Maskew Fair Medal and the Jack Edward McKee Medal from the Water Environment Federation. Professor Tchobanoglous serves nationally and internationally as a consultant to government agencies and private concerns. He is a past president of the Association of Environmental Engineering Professors. He is consulting editor for the McGraw-Hill book company series in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. He has served as a member of the California Waste Management Board. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a registered Civil Engineer in California.

Frank Kreith is a professor emeritus of engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he taught in the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Departments from 1959 to 1978. For the past 13 years, Dr. Kreith served as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) legislative fellow at the National Conference of State Legislatives (NCSL), where he provided assistance on waste management, transportation, and energy issues to legislators in state governments. Prior to joining NCSL in 1988, Dr. Kreith was chief of thermal research at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). During his tenure at SERI, he participated in the presidential domestic energy review and served as an advisor to the governor of Colorado. In 1983, he received SERI's first General Achievement Award. He has written more than a hundred peer-reviewed articles and authored or edited 12 books.

Dr. Kreith has served as a consultant and advisor all over the world. His assignments included consultancies to Vice Presidents Rockefeller and Gore, the U.S. Department of Energy, NATO, the U.S. Agency for National Development, and the United Nations. He is the recipient of numerous national awards, including the Charles Greeley Abbott Award from the American Solar Energy Society and the Max Jakob Award from ASME-AIChE. In 1992, he received the Ralph Coates Roe Medal for providing technical information to legislators about energy conservation, waste management, and environmental protection, and in 1998 he was the recipient of the pretigious Washington Award for "unselfish and preeminent service in advancing human progress."

Solid waste management is a rapidly revolving field and one cannot rely on older editions of text/hand books. Laws and regulations, not just federal and municipal, but worldwide as well are being legislated routinely. Landfill technology must be improved to control leachate and methane;implications of 'high tech' waste from electronics must be recognized as never before; incineration can be promising if proper containment of pollution, and reasonable costs can be implemented; separation technologies to distinguish different color of glass, grades of paper, types of metals and plastics need to be fully developed for use in recycling faciltities. And this handbook is the best source for a novice solid waste professional.

Nice book

I am going to use this book for a CE solid waste class as the text book. It has some deficiencies in that there are no problems in the text. However, since these are seniors and MS students, I will make the class project based and provide sample calculations as examples. I looked at a large number of books and this is the best information compendium I could find. I will also provide the students with a link to several State Design guidances, some like Oregon are really complete. I like this book.

This book is an excellent reference source for the evaluation and treatment of the spine, pelvis and TMJ using both manual techniques and exercise. The book has informational chapters on each of the aforementioned joints, as well as the vertebral artery, the scanning examination, and the subjective examination. The text is extensively referenced, and there are numerous case studies, that challenge the reader to test their differential diagnostic skills. Solid clarification, even for the VERY LOST.

For all those who thought they had substantial mathematical skills and overall capacity for learning chemistry (and realized they were sorely mistaken by the third lecture), THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. I am a reasonably intelligent person and a really good student, but my ego shrank to infinitesmal proportions when I tried chem in preparation for medical training.
Goldberg's written word sounds like you're sitting in a lecture, only clearer. Don't give up, just get the right way to learn it. Goldberg's writing is a good start.

Word problems made easy

I decided to buy this book while I was enrolled in a general chemistry course, in order to get more practice at solving word problems and to gain better insight at how to do so. This book presents any type of word problem that you are likely to face in a general chemistry class ( stoichiometry,concentrations,gas laws,thermochemistry,electrochemistry,equilibrium,colligative properties, and thermodynamics), and describes how to solve it along with explanations of the concepts involved.
Each section starts with a short description of the theory behind the problems to follow so you gain an understanding of the chemistry behind the problem. Afterward, serveral word problems of that type are fully worked out so a full understanding can be gained. Each chapter concluded with numerous supplementary problems followed by the answers. Highly recommended.

Buy this if you're having problems with Chemistry

It's worth buying this book if you only have one problem to find a solution for. It's easier to understand than a college chemistry book and has lots of shortcuts. I did word searches to find solution possibilities. My professor didn't make an attempt to explain how to solve density problems. This book explains the way and how in addition to explaining the method to approach when solving chemistry problems. Without this book, I wouldn't have a clue as to what my Chemistry teacher was talking about.

The culmination of a wildlife expert's life-long work on the "man-eating" lions of Tsavo, this deftly written study examines the history of two male lions who systematically hunted, killed and ate 135 railroad workers when the British built a railroad across Africa a century ago. The fascinating and horrifying story of these killings has already be the subject of a popular nonfiction book (The Man-Eaters of Tsavo and other East African Adventures, first published in 1907 and still in print today) and a Hollywood film (1996's The Ghost and the Darkness), but Patterson's book must now be considered the definitive Tsavo lion study. Patterson's research at Chicago's Field Museum and his work establishing the Tsavo National Park-the most important wildlife preserve in East Africa-have established him as one of the world's leading experts on lions as well as an important conservationist. A little over a century ago, at the height of European colonial expansion in Africa, the British undertook to "tame the wilderness" with a trans-Kenya railroad from Mombasa on the Indian Ocean to Lake Victoria. One hundred and thirty miles in, at what is now the Tsavo National Park, one of the world's largest wildlife preserves, nature struck back in the form of two male lions, which began to systematically hunt, kill, and devour railroad workers. The rampage lasted for more than nine months and is thought to have claimed the lives of 135 people. More lives would have been lost if not for Colonel John H. Patterson, a civil engineer tasked with building a bridge across the Tsavo River who, after an arduous 9-month hunt, killed the lions, earning the title of "liberator" among his crews and international acclaim as a sportsman.

The story of the Tsavo man-eaters has captivated the public's imagination for more than a century while giving rise to considerable scientific debate. What compelled those lions to prey on human beings--was it a matter of necessity, self-defense, or simply one of opportunity? And why are the lions indigenous to this region maneless? Is there something about maneless lions that makes them especially prone to becoming man-eaters, or is human predation by lions more common than we have been led to believe? What can the events of 1898 teach us about the extraordinary Tsavo lions and about lions in general?

In an effort to answer these questions, Bruce Patterson, principal investigator of the Tsavo Research Program and curator at the Field Museum, where the Tsavo man-eaters are on exhibit, has conducted extensive field research throughout the region. About the Author

Bruce D. Patterson, PhD, is the MacArthur Curator of Mammals at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, home to the lions killed by Colonel Patterson in 1898. He also teaches at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois, is President of the American Society of Mammalogists, and a PI of Earthwatch Institute's "Lions of Tsavo" project.

This book is very thorough in its investigation of the Tsavo lions and man-eating lions in general, as can be observed from the table of contents:

A Fascinating Study

Bruce Patterson's brilliant new book shines a much-needed scientific light on the lions of Tsavo. First made infamous by Colonel John Patterson (no relation to the author of this book), after he wrote "The Man-eaters of Tsavo" almost a century ago, and then re-introduced to modern audiences when the movie "The Ghost and the Darkness" came out in 1996, the lions of the barren East African region have been much speculated on. Their unusual physical characteristics and habits, including a reputed inclination to prey on men with greater frequency than other lions, have added to the interest about them.
Unfortunately, and somewhat surprisingly, little is known about the Tsavo lions. Are they a separate species from the lions found elsewhere in Africa or a subspecies? How does their social behavior differ from that of other lions? Why are the male lions of Tsavo typically maneless? Was the trait selected by evolution for some reason or determined by the tough physical environment of Tsavo?
Bruce Patterson, a naturalist with extensive experience studying these beasts, informs the debate on them to such a degree that even where he does not provide definitive answers to these questions about the lions - and he sometimes does -- he provides the definitive framework for understanding them. He approaches the creature from every angle. He has studied them in the field. He has worked on them in the laboratory. And he has extensively read both the scientific and popular literature on the lions.
Despite his impressive scholarship, Patterson is not afraid to tell the reader when he doesn't know something. He often writes that some area on the lions needs further study. I also appreciated how he took seriously what any source (white hunters, local tribesmen, etc.) had to say about the lions. Patterson does not snobbishly discount what a source says just because it was not written by a fellow scientist. He makes note of it in his ledger and considers it in the context of other information on the subject.
This is a delightful book. If you have any interest in lions in particular or big cats in general, you will find it fascinating and informative.

Complete but dense

As a medical student I find the most complete books to be the most helpful; nothing is more painful than being asked a question by some physician to which you don't know the answer. G&G offers a well laid out and thoughtfully constructed format for learning about mechanisms of action, adverse reactions, et al; but it's extremely dense. NOT appropriate for board studying but great for a pharmacology course. I would recommend the Lange pharm series as well for any med student taking pharm.

Essential for the Pharmacology Part of the Boards!

This pharmacology book is solely responsible for my honors grades in pharmacology and on the national boards.
All topics are covered comprehensively, with far greater clinical application than most pharmacology texts.
The chapter organization makes sense, and it is well indexed. This was one of the few med school books I kept and used for years after leaving clinical medicine to go into research.
I used the book for researching medications for family and myself - information on side effects and interactions was very good.
There are almost no illustrations, and few charts, so it's not easy reading, but it is definitely worthwhile.

The Last Log of the Titanic, the first Titanic book written from the perspective of an expert ship handler, subjects the sinking of the Titanic to the brand of professional analysis that until now has been conspicuously missing from the literature of the great liner. Captain David G. Brown reconstructs the events leading up to the disaster, working from eyewitness accounts. He meticulously examines the official testimony given before the U.S. Senate and the British Board of Trade, as well as original newspaper accounts, allowing logic and the rigorous standards of good seamanship, rather than bias and tradition, to reveal the facts of the case. About the Author
David G. Brown holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's License, 100 Gross Tons, with Commercial Assistance Towing and Auxiliary Sail endorsements, and teaches professional-level U.S. Coast Guard licensing courses. He also is an instructor for a firm specializing in safety risk assessment, crew training, and license instruction, builds epoxy-composite boats, and restores vintage wooden boats. He was captain of a high-speed ferry serving the western Lake Erie islands and currently owns a harbor tour company on the Maumee River in Ohio. He has worked as a television news producer, and won an Emmy in 1979 for his coverage of the Agent Orange story. He writes monthly columns for Boating World and Offshore magazines and is a regular contributor to many other marine publications. This is his fifth book.

An original and controversial look at the Titanic

David G. Brown's "The Last Log of the Titanic" should prove to be a controversial addition to the literature about the loss of the famous liner during her 1912 maiden voyage. This is not a book for the casual reader whose knowledge and interests about the Titanic are largely defined by the James Cameron movie. Rather, it is sharply focused upon the mechanics of the collision and subsequent sinking, together with the decisions made by Captain E.J. Smith and White Star Line chairman Bruce Ismay that influenced those events. While this book may have only limited appeal to those people mostly attracted by the human drama aspects of the tragedy, "The Last Log of the Titanic" should strongly interest persons who want to understand just what really happened to the ship itself.
The actual ship's log of the Titanic was lost during the sinking, so David Brown has "reconstructed" what that document might have been, based upon his minute-by-minute - even second-by-second - examination of the sequence of events. To do this, he has closely studied the primary evidence (especially the official inquiry testimony by survivors), but much of his reconstruction is drawn directly from his analysis of the physical damage and his own understanding of the characteristics and limitations of ship handling. Brown has relevant professional training and experience in this regard; he holds a US Coast Guard Masters License.
The most controversial portions of Brown's narrative can be summarized into three areas: First, he contends that the ship's lookouts spotted the iceberg several minutes before the collision, but failed to understand what they were seeing. Second, Brown concludes that the damage to the hull came from running over a projecting shelf of ice, not from a grazing impact along the side of the hull as depicted in numerous movies and books; and he also argues that the pattern of damage proves that the Titanic made two turns before the collision, one swinging the bow away from the berg, the second pushing the bow back towards the ice mountain. Third, Brown maintains that the rapid sinking (and thus the large number of casualties) was due to a fatal decision taken by Smith and Ismay to steam towards Halifax immediately after the collision, before the nature of the damage had been adequately ascertained; in Brown's view this action guaranteed that the stricken vessel could not remain afloat until rescue vessels arrived on the scene.
In my opinion, the evidence for the first of Brown's theses (that the iceberg was sighted, although not recognized, several minutes before the collision) is minimal and ambiguous. It does provide grounds for interesting speculation about how the history of that night could have been changed, but whether or not such a sighting was made is largely irrelevant to the main thrust of "The Last Log of the Titanic": the nitty-gritty details of how the ship actually sank. It is in these areas - the manner of the collision and the nature of the damage, plus the possibility that the damage was seriously aggravated by an incautious resumption of travel - that Brown's book will likely have its greatest impact. I cannot see how serious students of the disaster can ignore his conclusions without first making a careful evaluation of the evidence and his analysis. If Brown's explanation of the collision or of the subsequent actions taken is valid, then he has made an important contribution to our understanding of that well-remembered night.

Absolutely Engrossing

It has been a while since I have read a Titanic book from start to finish in one sitting, but I did with this book. The Last Log is another one of the many `alternate theories' of the sinking books that are so in vogue these days, but unlike most others of it's ilk, this one has real teeth.
I am a complete layman in things nautical, but Brown enabled me to understand every point he was trying to make, even some of the more arcane concepts like Bernoulli's Principle and lolling. The author has written one of the most knowledgeable accounts from a mariner's perspective that I have ever read.
In addition, Brown has gathered much of the conflicting testimony and arranged it into a cohesive whole. I did not agree with all of his conclusions (and some of them are WAY out there), but I have to acknowledge that his version of events is completely credible.
For one, First Officer Murdoch's actions are finally recognized for what they were, that of one of the most competent officer's to ever command a bridge. Ismay also gets a great deal of coverage, and although his part in the story is much, much darker, the author avoids the `sinister villain' oversimplifications the White Star Line chairman has received at the hands of many other authors.
On the other hand, Brown does make some incredible claims, often with little or no supporting evidence. One of the largest, that Titanic was dodging ice for hours before the final collision. Another being that when the ship ported around the berg, it almost collided with a huge ice field just beyond. There is simply no eyewitness evidence to support these claims.
Some members on the Titanic Mail List were initially put off by the in-your-face attitude of the editorials adapted by the publisher as a selling ploy. But don't let that stop you from reading this book. It's that good. Highest recommendation.
