Review
"The 15th edition manual is definitely worthy of Harrison's excellent reputation. The editors are clear in their purpose to provide easy-to-access, on-the-spot portable information on topics and problems routinely encountered on a hospital service." "The book is extremely well organized." "I was impressed with the quality of this manual. It is most applicable as a pocket reference for residents, interns, and medical students, who affectionately refer to it as "Baby Harrison's." "Because it has substantially more depth than several other available reference on-call manuals, I believe it is the more useful book." (Journal of the American Board of Family Practice 2002-03-01)

"The amazing aspect of this book is that it is over 1000 pages in size and thanks to densely packed text packs a vast amount of data between it's covers" "It represents excellent value for money." (British National Formulary 2001-10-01)

"This is an excellent condensation of the vast body of information found in the larger Harrison's " "Graphs, tables, and algorithms are used extensively, and are well placed and helpful" "It functions more as a miniature medical text..." "4 Stars" (Doody's 2001-10-01)

So So!!!
By Rodney Eddi
I understand the intention of Harrison's editors to provide us with a little version of this standard textbook, but honestly, I don't like it. I have owned several editions of this book, but I have never used it, because it is not a practical book. It is short in practical details (like disease management) and long in some other details. If you are looking for a handbook that can help you in clinical practice, forget about this one. There are so many better books out there (Washington, Ferri's,...). This book can be helpful for medical students to review medicine before exams or rotations. However, I have to say that new edition is much better than previous ones. At least it has more algorithms. Also, stay away from PDA version. It is even more stripped down! For your PDA, I highly recommend Ferri's Practical Guide or Washington Manual or 5 Minutes Clinical Consult.

Excellent pocket reference
By Rabin Bhandari
Once again the authors of Harrisons's Principles of Internal Medicine have come up with a succinct resource in this Manual. All the chapters have clear references back to the big tome. The tables are clearly laid out and have only the necessary data in them. If you're looking for just key words relating to a smattering of internal medicine, this is not the book for you. There is still a reasonable explanation in terms of pathophysiology and epidemiology of many conditions. The book is about A5 sized, and ~1000pages - but they're very thin sheafs of paper. I'd recommend getting the Principles of Internal Medicine too - or at least have access to a copy. A very good competitor is the Oxford Handbook series - though I think that this manual contains more information by more authoritative figures, without the 'artistic' writing that irritates me in the Oxford handbook.

great reference book
By lanoitan
Briefly speaking: this book is for people who are familiar with the field of Medicine. Every few years I have to get a new edition as medicine is developing so rapidly. As I am now out of the mainstream of Medicine, when I want to look up something I read this book and the Merck Manual and I look up words I don't know in the on-line medical dictionary. That provides a fairly good intro. If I want to know more I go into the papers on PubMed. As far as I'm concerned, this book is a must-have, if you want to try to keep up with the field.
