Not for Strong-Willed Children

I think perhaps some parents understanding of strong-willed and the author's might be different. Anyone who has a truly strong-will child might find this book LESS than useful. It is program that would probably work with a very mildly strong-willed child and like the other reviewer said, it is probably good for EVERY child (who is not strong-willed). A chair in the hallway for a time-out spot is NOT feasible for seriously strong-willed kids. Nor is sending them to your bedroom. Strong-willed kids don't stay in chairs in the hallway and they rip apart rooms they are sent to for time-outs (often while you are holding the door closed b/c there is no chance they will stay in there on their own). If this was not promoted for strong-willed kids, I would say it is a good plan. It might also work if you start really early with your child. We have been using Magic 1-2-3 for a long time with our child and have pretty good results. We still have explosive episodes more than I would like and this book didn't offer me anything new or special for my strong-willed little girl.

Great for any kid, not just strong-willed ones

Just had to write in, although I actually have an older edition. This book saved my family this year! My 5 year old (then 4) was acting out horribly and we were spanking and he was just getting worse & worse. This was when we brought home our baby (our 3rd child) of course. We just all felt terrible & spanking was clearly making it all worse. Our first child has never been spanked, having always been very compliant, so we had no experience with how to deal with our very defiant, intense, and obstinate (but also very loving) boy. I found this book on Amazon, looking for ANYTHING out of desperation, and I'm glad to say that it worked like nothing else has. Be warned, as the book says, that if your child is a born "tester" as mine is, you will never be out of the woods & this book will not "cure" him. He still tests us (& now his kindergarten teacher) on a regular basis, especially when his regularly structured day changes. He just will always have to check where his limits are to feel comfortable. And boy, does he test! I have to say that this book also worked for my nanny, whom he was testing quite a bit when she first started caring for him. And on rare occasions, I hate to say that he does behave outrageously enough that we will wind up spanking him. But most of the time, he does OK, he knows where his limits are, & these techniques WORK. A word of warning, though. They take TIME and a committment to be willing to STOP whatever you're doing and enforce the limits immediately. Which often means you HAVE to interrupt a meal, or groceries, or class, or any other activity for which interruptions are unwelcome. This isn't magic and it is all pretty common sense. But parenting children like my boy is unequivocally high-intensity and they will be high-need for as long as we are raising them. It just requires accepting that fact & that it isn't your fault. I highly & frequently recommend this book to ALL parents, especially those who have been spanking. It will change your outlook, you will understand how spanking deeply undermines your parenting and your child, and you will truly appreciate your child AND being a parent. To those desperately seeking a solution, here's the best I've found. Best wishes on your parenting adventure!

Great advice for dealing with MY strong willed 3 year olds

I checked out a few books before deciding on this one. It focuses mainly on using positive reinforcement and time outs to change bad behaviors. Prior to reading this, I didn't really know how to use time outs successfully. (For example, the book discusses how the child should be returned to the original place where the behavior occurred after finishing the time out. So if you were asking the child to pick up her toys, ask her to pick them up again after the time out. If not, the time out can become a way to "get out" of doing something. )
The approaches discussed in the book have really helped my family a lot. I feel like I have a set of guidelines to follow so when my daughter starts to act out I don't get frustrated - I know what to do! I guess that just goes with my personality though - I'm more frustrated when I don't know what's happening next. This helps me avoid that - it's like I have a mental checklist in my head of things to do when she acts up. Now that my husband and I both use the techniques discussed - our whole household is much happier!
Another reviewer commented that ignoring a child is a poor parenting technique. I disagree. I found it to be very effective when used properly. Common sense tells you not to ignore a child who's crying because she's hurt. However, when a child is screaming purely to get attention (as mine does) and there's nothing wrong with her, ignoring is the only way to curb that behavior. We had a real problem with my 3 y/o daughter screaming in the car, in the store, or at home, just because she didn't get want she wanted. After we'd ignored the behavior enough times, she simply stopped doing it. Instead, we tell her to explain how she feels. So now she just says "I'm mad about something." And we talk about it. SOOO much better!
My point is this - I realize this book will not give you all the answers, and nor will it work for every single child, but I found it quite helpful in parenting MY strong-willed child.

Some Basics About Volatile Stocks You Don't Need to Learn

This book has lots of detailed, accurate information about NASDAQ and the stocks that trade there. Unless you plan to buy and sell these stocks (which I would advise against for most people), this information is of little value. The book is a good implementation of an inappropriate book concept for most people.
The author makes a great comment. " . . . [T]he market is a place for risk capital." I interpret that to mean money that you can afford to lose, like money you have after you have provided for your retirement, paying for college educations, getting rid of your credit card debt, etc. Now, very few people are in the circumstance to have risk capital. Unless you do, stop thinking about investing in individual stocks now.
If you do have risk capital, I suggest you read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" as your first step. Because it is unlikely that your risk capital should be going first into stocks.
If for some reason, you feel you must be in stocks, please read John Bogle's Common Sense About Mutual Funds.
My favorite quote in the book is "If an investor had used only P/E ratios as a guide to purchase stocks, she or he would have missed out on many large gainers." That is certainly true, and missing out on those gainers would also have allowed you to miss out on many losers . . . and gainers that became losers. Can you think of a stock with an overpriced P/E in March 2000 that is higher today?
Skip this book unless you are thinking about becoming a stock broker.
After you read this review, I suggest you think about other areas where having less knowledge is an advantage. For example, would it help you to know more or less about post-surgical complications?
Take advantage of all those situations when less knowledge is more! Keep your risk capital where it belongs, as the author recommends!

A waste of paper

"Secrets of RF Circuit Design" contains no secrets and precious little design. Commencing with some RF basics, but not a lot, the book progresses through a hotchpotch of largely redundant information referencing to obsolete devices, interspersed with occasional tiresome moralising anecdotes. Such is the unevenness that one is informed along the way that pi is a letter in the Greek alphabet but the introduction of complex numbers receives no explanation. RF essentials such as transistor cascode, Miller effect, common base etc. are barely mentioned. Likewise recent (or even past) developments in RF communication, Lecher bars, stripline, or in fact anything of consequence receive at most cursory comment. But one is guided in the repair of IF coils. How useful. How appropriate. Pity that essential note upon the solubility of thin copper wires in solder was omitted. Duh.
Many basic circuits are mentioned, though detail is simply glossed over. Almost nothing is explained to a level which is useful. The descriptions of IMPATT, TRAPITT and BARITT and other obscure devices serve only to confuse potential designers as to what they might expect to find in industry, or even what they might find in catalogues. Warning of the danger of carbon tet might be relevant, were it actually available. And so it goes, irrelevancies and misdirection.
Then there are the mistakes, factual, diagrammatic, typo and dubious opinion. Laced with so many errors the text cannot ever be taken as authoritative. I certainly didn't know that "The nautical mile is 1/360 of the Earth's circumference at the equator, more or less." This is the third edition and it is simply gross ineptitude which lets rubbish like this slip through.
With its annoying "Radio Shack" demeanour, the obtrusive, extraneous in-text references and addresses serve only to distend the already bloated text. Writing is painfully wordy, imprecise and begs severe red pen editing. Large heading font, wide margins and huge simplistic diagrams also serve to fill over five hundred pages which if decently constructed would make a book a third of the size.
...I feel cheated. It was a waste of money. Almost uniquely amongst my purchases, this book is destined for the bucket. Unmitigated dross.

A strange mix

First a disclaimer: I have the previous version of this book, but I flipped through the new one and it's essentially the same book.

As a newbie to RF electronics, this book appeared to be the holy grail of radio knowledge when I first saw it in the book store.

I actually read the entire thing cover to cover. Then I reread chapters over and over and over again, trying to make SOME sense of it, all the time thinking that it was my lack of experience that was making it difficult to get certain concepts down.

Now with a little hind sight I see what an awful place this book was to start.

It has is a real strange mix of totally glossing over important information, but then spending countless pages explaining the most inane topics

For example there's a whole section on how to repair an antique bobbin type coil, yet it's painfully short on how you'd actually design your own.

Furthermore, throughout the book it's as if Carr drifts between assuming the reader has no knowledge of rf concepts, and assuming the reader is a full blown rf engineer.

It's SO frustrating.

Not to mention, even I as a newbie picked up on SEVERAL errors in calculations, images, and text. (in fairness, these could very well have been corrected in the newer edition)

Also while I'm being fair, I don't think Carr claims that the book is meant for inexperienced readers. But I really feel the book misses all audiences. It covers the basics while assuming you know all the magic "secrets" that connect the dots he lays out. And if you know those, you should already know the basics.

Maybe they should just rename it to "Joseph Carr's Thoughts on RF Design" that might be more appropriate.

Despite my lengthy criticism, the book is not totally without value, I did learn a few things. So I recommend it ONLY if you can find it used and CHEAP.

This book is more for the RF hacker than for an RF designer . It provides very little design info and theory of operation - it is mostly an RF 'cookbook' for people that want to design by trial and error or just experiment for fun.

Informative and interesting

This book, rich with wonderful old photos, gives a concise history of the last 100 years of the financial culture that has come to be known as Wall Street. A good blend of text, photos, and charts make this book interesting to the non-financial reader.
The author divided the book into decades and each chapter outlined the changes that occurred over those years.
At the beginning of the last century, Wall Street was known for its lack of financial regulation regarding trades. Scandals and outright swindles abounded. Four years after the Crash of 1929, FDR's administration passed nationwide banking and securities laws to make sure that this kind of disaster did not happen again.
Unfortunately, the real and distasteful inner workings of Wall Street were revealed in the Senate hearings. An SEC commissioner called investment bankers "financial termites". This knowledge scared investors away for the next 20 years.
In the early 50s, investing became popular with middle class investors for the first time in a generation, and mutual funds were developed after being gone for 30 years.
The 60s brought the birth of the modern mergers and acquisitions business in the U.S, and the days of small brokerage firms were coming to an end.
The 70s brought extensive reforms concerning commissions while the 80s were the years of junk bonds, insider trading scandals, and the savings and loan crisis.
The author called the 80s the decade of greed and the 90s the decade of boom. The Internet has brought about a totally new way of trading stocks and has made up-to-the-minute financial news available to everyone.
The changes in the last 100 years on Wall Street have been phenomenal, mirroring the technological changes in our society.

Excellent counterpart to the AIA Handbook.

First off, I'm an architect, so my review is written from that perspective.

This is a great companion to the AIA Handbook. If the AIA Handbook is about running a firm, the CSI PRM is about running a project. An oversimplification, yes, but both books are so dense and full of critical information, no 100 word review could do either justice.

The CD includes many useful references including an overview of MasterFormat and a list of divisions / sections, but does not include the entire MasterFormat "product" (the full MF product includes 95-04 conversion tools and additional documentation).

My only complaint is that the text is so dense it takes a lot of time and energy to absorb all of the information within. :) It's as if they took a 1000 page tome and compressed it into 300 pages. (The product description says 1200 pages, but it's only an inch thick, so I'm guessing 300 pp.)

A must-have for architects who strive to deliver projects in a more expert and professional manner, and wish to more effectively interface with contractors during the construction phase. If you're a pure "designer" or only involved with the front end of projects this will probably stay on the shelf, but if you're responsible for the rest of the process (DD through construction and occupancy) this book is essential.

I can't believe I made it through 6 years of architectural education without being required to own this book.

I find this book to be very useful. I use it frequently to check assumptions for system design, to get ballpark estimates of savings potential for energy recovery systems, calculate quick operating cost, and to eliminate systems that do not warrant more detailed study. The author, Michael Kjelgaard is accessible via email and knowledgeable. This book is a good tool for the engineering industry. I recommned this book, it has saved me time in calculations that has paid for the book by multiples.

This book gives the main points in simple language that anyone can understand. Further all the points and key terms a mediator needs to remember are hightlighted and enclosed in boxes on the relevant pages.
All points are explained with examples and simple cases.
I recommend this book for all who prepare for examination. This is a good book for quick reference.

The master YODA book in dealing with A-holes in your life...MUST READ top 10

this book is a MUST HAVE for the manager, foreman, supervisor, director, etc. It is a little Thick AND dry in the first chapters explaining the psychology and mindsets of personality types. But then gives REAL world drills and scenarios.

I have been able to diffuse arguments, deal with exploding bosses tempers, encourage whiners to step up, Put the pin back into hand grenades, taken enemy fire from tank mentalities..and more.

If you want to survive the office/workplace drama the you must pick up this book and read it with highliters. and re read to polish up skills...even works with teenagers! and other hard to get along with in-laws...

You Have to Change Your Response First

I saw an opportunity to apply a technique from this book on my 16 yr old for an event that was potentially a daily problem. It immediately worked and I have not had that problem with him since. Most of the interpersonal problems I see at home or in the work place are really kind of petty and involve
1) Misunderstanding the other person's motives
2) No effective plan to clear the air
The two Ricks offer us simple ways to address the issue. In the process, one gains insight into what the other person was thinking and how the affair got out of hand. In every case, the techniques involve confrontation, but controlled, minimally threatening, and supportive to the behavior-impaired party.

The secret to handling difficult people, as pointed out in the book, is a modification in your response to their behavior, i.e., the initial change has to be yours! In some cases, they can be totally disarmed quite easily by the right words.

Some of the "caricatured" examples in the Ricks' book are sick and would just require too much maintenance and/or a referral to a psychiatrist. Real crazies are not going to give up whatever wierd secondary gains they're getting from their idiotic methods. Even those, however, would be at least temporarily susceptible to the empathetic & helpful confrontational yet supportive techniques this book offers.

Since everyone usually possesses at least a few of these 10 difficult personality characteristics to some degree, it's hard not to see yourself in this book. This was appropriately humbling for me and I am finding myself to be more tolerant of others. What more can you ask of a self-help book?

Excellent quick read for managers and others who have to deal with conflict

This is an excellent, well-written, humorous and very practical book on dealing with difficult personalities. It is a quick read, but it is packed with useful information for dealing with different personality types at their worst.

In this book, the authors identify ten basic personalities that fall at different points between two dimensions: aggression-passivity and whether they are primarily task-oriented or people-oriented. It is a very simple model, but it is powerful and works well in a business environment.

There are many good stories, cartoons and boxes with summaries of how to handle various types of people in difficult situations. I have field-tested the ideas and they are sound and work well in practice.

Having insight into your own style is also worth being aware of. You will no doubt see yourself in these pages and more than likely will laugh out loud. More importantly, you will also raise your awareness so that you will have more choice in difficult situations.

This book should be on all managers shelves. It is a useful tool for deciphering the behavior of people much different from yourself.
